We've only flown Delta Xpress because I like the fact in knowing I'll be next to my family and we have an assigned seat.

Southwest Airlines seems to offer some pretty good fares. How bad is to get a seat? It says on their website that some flights might be sold out so even if you have a ticket you aren't guaranteed a spot on that flight? I also heard that some seats face backwards?

What are your suggestions on getting two seats together and flying facing forwards and getting on the flight that you actually want to take?

Thanks in advance for your help.

We have never had a problem getting a seat on a flight we had tickets for. Some of the seats do face backward. They face the row behind them. Those are the bulkhead seats and emergency exit seats. We try to get them since there are 6 of us so we can all sit together. The seats that favce backward have a wall behind them so they do not recline. They also have limited storage space under them but I had room for a diaper bag and a backpack under another.

Southwest doesn't assign seats so the best way to ensure that you get seated together is to check in early so you get to board first. I usually at check in 1.5 hours before departure and I always get on in the first group. If there are just two of you, it shouldn't be a problem getting seats together even if you board in the last group though.

Get there early, you should have no problem. They don't bump people without asking for volunteers first.
The planes are being refitted and replaced and those "backward" seats will not be there in the new design.
I have only been separated from Dee on one flight, our fault, we were late. Typical. :) I figured, I live with the man I am going to be with him at WDW for an entire week, so 2 hours and 45 minutes of not being attached at his hip was not going to kill either one of us. :) In fact, it was rather peaceful not hearing him snore (he is asleep almost immediately after leaving the gate, LOL)

Another happy Southwest customer here! We have been on many Southwest flights - several of which were oversold. The new way of getting your boarding pass in groups at check in works much better than the old way - you used to have to line up at the gate and they didn't issue passes until 1 hour prior to take off. Now if you check in 1 1/2 - 2 hours prior - you're pretty much guaranteed an A or B boarding pass.

When you get to the gate - if you aren't shy about sitting on the floor and you have a B pass - sit at the start of the B line to wait - if you have an A - you'll surely be able to get seats together! They only issue about 30-40 A passes. I've had B passes several times, and never had trouble getting seats together!
