Haven't flown with them for years, so I see on their website that you now have to pay to check in early. My question is if you don't pay to check in early do they have an early boarding for people who need assistance? I don't want to pay the extra money, but I have two older people traveling with me who would need to get on early.

Yes, you can preboard. Ask at the counter, they will give you a blue sleeve for your boarding pass.

The EBCI is an option for $10 for SWA to check you in at 36 hours, instead of 24. If you don't choose that option, you can still, and should, check in at 24 hours for no charge. If you have people traveling with you that need assistance, it won't matter when you check in for them as they are allowed to preboard before all others.
