Southwest 50K Bonus question

I did the Southwest 50K bonus offer about a year ago on the card that costs $69 a year (personal?). Can I still do the Premier version and get another 50K Points? I remember people doing this to get the companion pass, and I'd be able to also if I could do this now. However, the fine print says that you can't get the bonus if you've gotten a bonus on the same product w/in 24 months. Are all Southwest cards considered the same product or is the personal card still different from the premier card? Thanks.

Plus and Premier are two separate products. There are also matching "business" cards. You can get the bonus points on each of them.

Yes you can get the bonus with a new card. Be aware, though, that the companion pass is earned for 110,000 points in a calendar year so your 50,000 points from last year do not count.

Hijack: If my significant other has me as an authorized user on his Southwest card (meaning I have my own card on HIS account), does that mean I can't apply for my own card (of the same type) from Southwest?

I am on my DH card Plus card and I was able to apply for the Plus and Premier card and got both a few weeks ago

Also for those of us trying to reach the 110K point mark look on the rapid rewards site. There are several offers that give 1300 for very small purchases. I got the Wall Street Journal for $12 for a 13 week subscription and the New Your Times for the same price and got 2700 points for less that $25

Do the 50000 points have to be used by the card holder only or can they be used for flights for family members too?

You can book tickets for whomever you want with your points.

How quick after you are approved for the card can you start making purchases???

I don't think you can get the full card number until you actually receive the card in the mail. In my case, it took 5 or 6 days. I made my purchases on the 2nd, and my statements closed yesterday, so hopefully my points and companion status will show up on the Southwest website by this weekend.

I had a black card before. Does anyone know if that is a Plus or a Premier? I cancelled it after the year, I don't think I still have it.

How long ago was that? If it was more than 24 months ago, you should be fine regardless of which card it was.

I just wanted to bump this to see if anyone happens to know the answer. Not just for you but that would help us out as well :)

I'm looking through the terms and I think you would be ok if you got an account in the other person's name. We did the premier and then the plus in my name, and I'm thinking of doing it in my wife's name to get her the 50k. All I see is that you are eligible if YOU didn't get a bonus in the last 24 months.

Just want to ask those who've gotten the rewards before if this would be true. I don't want to wait 3 months of statements (then up to 6-8 weeks more) to book my flight. So, will the points post shortly after you spend $2,000, even if it's in the first month, rather than after all 3 months?

No, you have to both spend and pay off the $2000... then at the next statement closing date after you've done both, the points will credit within a few days. But if you do all that before the first statement, it should credit right then at the first statement date.

Nope, that's not true.

I applied on 1/27 and got the cards in the mail on 2/2. I paid my property taxes and DVC dues that day. My statement closed on 2/10, I scheduled a payment on on 2/11, and all my points (and companion status) posted yesterday, on 2/12. So, in my experience, all the points posted two days after my first statement closed.

ok.. good to know. I had to pay it off last year when I did this.. I'm doing it again now, so its great to have updated info. Sorry for the outdated info.

While it might not impact your choice of credit cards, you should be aware that Southwest is making changes to its Rapid Rewards program. On Friday, it posted the following on its website:

"[F]rom time to time we must make some updates to our program. Beginning April 17, 2015, the number of Rapid Rewards Points needed to redeem for certain flights will vary based on destination, time, day of travel, demand, fare class, and other factors. However, there are still many flights which will stay at the current redemption rate."
