Well, we are from up North and on one of our first trips to Florida we stopped to eat at a little diner type restaurant that was off an I95 exit, somewhere in Georgia. The waitress was extremely friendly, but she had a strong Southern accent and we had a hard time understanding everything she was saying to us. We didn't want to ask her to repeat everything, so we did the best we could and smiled a lot. One of our kids was looking over the menu and wondered aloud why everything seemed to come with grits, and, " by the way, what are grits?" Well, the waitress looked at us in shock and couldn't believe that none of us had ever tasted grits, so she brought a big plateful of grits to our table, no charge!
Toward the end of our meal, our friendly waitress came by, saw that we were ready to go and told us that she'd be right back with our check. Well, when she said, "check", with her accent we thought she said, "cake". We sort of looked at each other and thought, "Wow, cake for the road. What a nice place this is!" When the waitress returned with our, "cake", we realized what she had really said. That was about ten years ago and the kids still talk about the time we ate in Georgia and had grits and "cake"!
