Southern Food..........MMMMMM......

Okay, Ya'll - I grew up in NC and am now in NYC and the one thing I haven't found done correctly up here is HUSH PUPPIES!!! I wish I had some now (with Pecan Pie on the side). Will someone please send some my way? With Sweetened Ice Tea, of course.

My wife and I have read several books in the Mitford Files series which are set in a mythical North Carolina town.

I keep hearing them refer to eating livermush which is nothing I had ever heard of before - nor do I want to try!

Shannon, you don't like grits
You never had my grandmothers!!!!

Hey 100%Disney, is Duke's mayo all that it is supposed to be? I don't eat any mayo, but DW does and I just bought her a jar this week.

We normally do BAMA, but since I have heard John Boy & Billy give it such high reviews.....

Ohhh! I love fried livermush sandwiches! :p
I grew up in SC.

I may be from the the North but we spend lots of time in the South. Just thinking of She-crab soup and red rice with fried catfish, hush puppies and slaw is making my mouth water.

I haven't met a grit I like yet.

You listen to Jim Bob and Silly Boy? My SO loves to listen to them (and he hates for me to change their names like that:teeth: ). I rarely listen to the station they're on anymore (mornings or afternoons-they're only on in the am though) because I don't like NASCAR and I'm not a 17 yo boy.;)

We use JFG mayo.:) It's creamier than Bama and doesn't have the twang that Hellman's and Miracle Whip seem to have.

Hey alabamaalan- There's no comparison, Duke's is the BEST. My Step-dad is in the military, so when he and my Mom left Fort Bragg to move out west she said the thing she desperately missed was Duke's. She also says that the food in Washington State and California didn't have much flavor. They just moved to Tampa, she is tickled pink. As for livermush, anyone who hasn't tried it doesn't know what they are missing, I love it fried crispy. Suzannan--- I can relate to the hush puppies especially dipped in ranch dressing.

Well, we are from up North and on one of our first trips to Florida we stopped to eat at a little diner type restaurant that was off an I95 exit, somewhere in Georgia. The waitress was extremely friendly, but she had a strong Southern accent and we had a hard time understanding everything she was saying to us. We didn't want to ask her to repeat everything, so we did the best we could and smiled a lot. One of our kids was looking over the menu and wondered aloud why everything seemed to come with grits, and, " by the way, what are grits?" Well, the waitress looked at us in shock and couldn't believe that none of us had ever tasted grits, so she brought a big plateful of grits to our table, no charge!
Toward the end of our meal, our friendly waitress came by, saw that we were ready to go and told us that she'd be right back with our check. Well, when she said, "check", with her accent we thought she said, "cake". We sort of looked at each other and thought, "Wow, cake for the road. What a nice place this is!" When the waitress returned with our, "cake", we realized what she had really said. That was about ten years ago and the kids still talk about the time we ate in Georgia and had grits and "cake"!

This NAWTHARN girl never had about 90% of the things mentioned in this thread.

But then again, you all of you southerners probably have never had holupki (stuffed cabbage), pirohi (or pirogie), haluski (cabbage and noodles or potato dumplings), piatskies (potato pancakes), kolbasi, or nut, apricot, or poppyseed rolls.

I don't think that the Eastern Europeans who brought THIS food over ever got any further south than PA. ;)
