Southern Dunes home rental??

We're planning a trip with the family for July. We have previously rented a home in Emerald Isle in 2005 and 2007, so we know that exact location. We're getting quotes now from home rentals and a handful have come in from Southern Dunes area. I realize they are most likely offering a cheaper nightly rate, because they are farther out...but just how far are they from the parks? I realize the time of year you go can impact your local traffic congestion etc..but on average..is it too far? Are we better off paying another $20 or more a night to stay closer?
