Hello!

I know that sometimes on cruise ships the ship will anchor or moor away from shore, and then the passengers have to take a tender to shore.

I have NOT heard of DCL doing this- do they not do it? Or have I just not heard about it?

Do you know which ports use the tenders?

Thanks!

Grand Cayman is a tender port. So is Cabo San Lucas.

On the DCL site, when you look at an itinerary that includes a tendered port it (the port in question) has an asterisk:
Day Port Guest Ashore Guest Onboard
1 Port Canaveral, Florida - 3:45 PM
2 At Sea - -
3 Cozumel, Mexico 8:30 AM 4:30 PM
4 Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands* 10:30 AM 5:30 PM
5 Falmouth, Jamaica 7:30 AM 4:45 PM
6 At Sea - -
7 Disney Castaway Cay 8:30 AM 4:45 PM
8 Port Canaveral, Florida 7:30 AM -
* This port requires tendering

We also had tenders in La Spezia on our Med cruise.

DCL will definitely tender if need be. They use shoreside tenders as all the boats on the DCL ships are lifeboats, not tenders. Many cruise ships from other lines carry 4-6 tenders which are designed differently from the rest of the life boats.

Grand Cayman and Cabo are two of the most commonly visited tender ports, but you could tender most anywhere if there are enough ships in port that day.

I don't remember tendering anywhere on our Oct. 2015 Southern Caribbean cruise. You're itinerary may be different though.

Thanks! Very helpful!

Totally depends on the port. We've tendered in Grand Cayman (all ships have to tender), La Spezia, Villefranche (I think - definitely somewhere in Europe where we've been twice because I recall the tenders and the port building but not necessarily which port it was). There are also some ports (sorry, can't recall which) where some ships are docked at the pier and some are tendered. I don't know if it's because some booked earlier and got the pier or if it was a specific decision (I imagine it's more expensive to dock at the pier but then you have the additional cost of tenders so I've no idea which is a less expensive option overall). As Princess Shmoo points out, the itinerary will say so and you be reminded ad naseum on board about tenders and the process for getting on them and scheduling.
