Southern California in 9 days (help)

My Granddaughter (17) and I (over 17) are WDW experts, however we are going to DL in May, staying at the Grand Californian for 5 nights.
From there we are thinking about taking Amtrak to San Diego and staying another 4 nights there.
How do we figure out the best place to stay in San Diego if we have no car?
Do I need to look into renting a car?
Is Amtrak a good idea.

Any input would be helpful.
So interesting to plan a trip from the other coast

This is what we have planned it may help u with yours

Myself and DD age 19 we are from a small town and driving in California gives me heart palpitations!! so this is our non driving plans.

July 12 fly out of Toronto to LAX. Take super shutle for $43 to Hilton Universal for 3 nights. Do Universal Studios VIP tour, A Day in LA tour

July 15 take town car to Disneyland Hotel $112
July 20 take Amtrak train to San Diego $54
stay at Pacific Terrace Hotel for 5 nights. Do San Diego zoo, SeaWorld. Take taxis.
July 25 fly out of San Diego aiport back to Toronto.

This could be shorter but we wanted to do Disneyland leisurely and the hotel in San Diego is right on the water so want to enjoy some sun and sand! I dont know what your budget is as the Pacific Terrace Hotel is pricey but looks amazing...

Amtrak is a great way to get to San Diego. If you do not want to drive, I would look for Hotels either around Old Town or Downtown. From these locations, you can either take a taxi or public transportation, using buses and the trolley. You could also look for a hotel that offers a shuttle to the Zoo and Seaworld. The only down side would be if you wanted to go to the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park, as it takes 3+ hours to get there without a car.

Spoke with granddaughter and we both love the idea on Amtrak. I was looking at staying at the Hampton Inn that is located in Old San Diego
