I'm having a book club meeting tomorrow with a southern food theme. Everyone is bringing a dish to contribute to the meal, but I'd like to provide a few appetizers? Any ideas? I don't like frying things in the house, so no okra or green tomatoes!

You can't do the south without deep frying something.

But, peaches are a quintessential southern food. However, I don't know what appetizer you could make from them.

Sausage Balls:

1 lb Jimmy Dean sausage (or similar brand pork sausage)
2 cups bisquick (some recipes say 3 cups)
10 oz grated sharp cheddar cheese (I think the sharper the better)

Mix all ingredients (you'll need to use your hands and this takes some effort). Roll into 1-inch balls. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

Just curious, is it for health reasons, clean-up, the smell, other?????

Cheese straws and ham biscuits are the classic nibbles in my part of the South. And iced tea.

- Little ham biscuits
- Vidalia onion tarts (Paula Deen has a Vidalia onion pie but you could do little tarts)
- Red velvet cupcakes (Cakeman recipe on Food network website)

I am now getting hungry!!

How about sausage in BBQ sauce?

slice sausage in rounds ( I use local, either Manda or Savoie's pork)
Fry down, drain then add your favorite BBQ sauce and a jar of either grape or apple jelly. Put into a slow cooker after heated and keep on low! Love it!!

It's the smell. I just don't like it. I have really thick hair and the smell gets trapped in my hair for days. Silly, I know! It also cuts down on the eating of fried foods!

Well, there's always the go-to emergency appetizer: a block of cream cheese with a bottle of Pickapeppa Sauce poured over it, served with butter crackers. (Seriously, EVERY southern woman I know keeps a block of cream cheese, a box of Club crackers, and an unopened bottle of Pickapeppa on hand at all times just in case she needs to give something to people who drop in unannounced.)

Cheese Straws are a classic, but they are not especially easy to make. (You can skip piping them, however. I always just press these out, chill the dough and cut them into strips with a pizza wheel on parchment paper, then give them a twist when I put them on the pan, so that they bake evenly.) http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1168119

If you want a Louisiana flavor, you cannot go wrong with Spinach Madeleine.

(You can add a lb. of drained sauteed crawfish tails to Spinach Madeleine if you want something with more protein.)

Of course, the ultimate Southern appetizer is the deviled egg. Unfortunately, I don't have any recipe advice on that one, because I'm allergic to eggs and I don't make them.

My DF's family is from Mississippi, and I LOVE to nibble on these when we're down there visiting:

Cajun Boiled Peanuts

1 pound raw peanuts, in shells
1 (3 ounce) package dry crab boil (such as Zatarain's Crab and Shrimp Boil)
1/2 cup chopped jalapeno peppers
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1/2 cup salt
2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
1/2 cup red pepper flakes

Place peanuts, crab boil, jalapenos, garlic powder, salt, Cajun seasoning, and red pepper flakes into a slow cooker. Pour in water to cover the peanuts and stir to combine. Cover and cook on Low until peanuts are soft, at least 24 hours. Stir occasionally, and add water as needed to keep peanuts covered. Drain; serve hot or cold.

It's not a southern party without a cheese ball and crackers. I don't know how to make it but there is always one at any event.

The best is pampered chef makes a spicy pineapple sauce, that over cream cheese is to die for!:worship: I cover cream cheese with every thing. Pepper jelly is a favorite, also I have found a peach and pecan jelly. Just pour over the cream cheese and enjoy!

Deviled eggs are a staple of almost every get together. I have even seen them served at weddings and funerals!:lmao: So simple to make: Boil the eggs, peel then cut in half lengthwise. Mix the yellows with mayo, mustard, and diced pickles. fill the holes in the whites in the yellow mixture and sprinkle with paprika. You can even top with a slice of olive or a small boiled shrimp! Just use your taste buds!!:rotfl:

I think I am going to make those tarts. They look really good.

I am also going to look for Pikapeppa sauce, but if I don't find it, I will use a salsa of some kind over cream cheese. Easy! Thanks!

Cheese straws have come up a few times, but they seem kind of tricky.

Punkin- What's this about raising a pole dancer? DD was a a Disney bus and was swinging around the pole like a stripper! I made her stop, of course, but I swear I've seen moves like hers before!:rotfl2:
JoBird- Hey! How's the Sweet Nothings thread? I'm really bad at keeping up with fast moving threads!
