My kids have off in October for fall break and I was thinking of planning a quick trip to see some fall foliage. I've never been to mountains near Tennessee or South Carolina/North Carolina area. We have family near Huntsville, AL so we would probably start there and would like to go to some state parks around TN or SC/NC or Georgia to see some leaves changing.

Is early October too early?

Where have any of you been that was just breathtaking? I saw Oconee State Park and Table Rock State Park in SC. We want to do some hiking and canoeing.

Sky Line Drive has beautiful foliage. Nashville, TN is a fun city to visit and Asheville, NC and the Biltmore are pretty impressive. Peak "Leaf Peeping" varies year to year depending on climate conditions but October is a good bet.

Vogel State Park near Blairsville, Ga (2 hours north of Atlanta) is very nice and deep in the mountains. Great for leaf peeking (if the weather cooperates!)
have fun!

East Tn and NW North Carolina should have some beautiful foliage around that time of year. Anything in the Smokeys will stating to turn. But Peak season is usually around the end of Oct beginning of Nov

Just for anyone who comes across this post - Nashville TN has a Fall Foliage train ride. Also, Chattanooga is a great place to visit for fall foliage and a very easy drive from Huntsville, AL. The Smokey Mtns National Park has great (more primitive) camping, but there are loads of nice places to camp near the park outside Townsend and Gatlinburg with amenities like showers, etc.

Cumberland Gap National Park...See Kentucky. Tennessee & Virginia in one view.
