Last August my DBF went to Ft. Jackson South Carolina for Recruiting School (for the Army) and every weekend I would drive down I-95 to visit and have to see the South of the Border signs about Disney World tickets and it was depressing because I always wanted to keep driving until I got to WDW!!! And the stupid billboards are every five feet to keep reminding me!!!! :) Does anyone else have this problem? Especially when we actually drive to WDW and we start seeing those signs halfway through North Carolina and you know you still have so much farther to go!!

When I was a kid in Maryland, my brothers and I had loads of fun with those billboards!

"A million ways tequila peso at South of the Border"

"Mexican Weather Report: Chili today, hot tamale"

Too bad I found out as an adult that it was a tacky, crappy joint

"You're always a 'weiner' at Pedro's." [with the obligatory large hot dog]

"Your sheep are all counted at Pedro's" [with moving sheep, no less!]

These signs are great. Always lets us know we're getting close! And on the way home, always let's us know we're getting further away. :guilty:

"You never sausage a place." with the big sausage on the billboard.

My fav is the big spark plug at the gas station there - "we put the spark in your ark." :rotfl:

we love those things. we got suckered in once - that was enough. we still love looking at the signs though.

we used to drive to wdw not to long ago and my lord! those signs make me giggle we make up a game:

the first person to see a disney sign wins $5 to spend on the trip for every next sign they get $1.

theres more to the rules but that's the gist of things ::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo

It's all coming back to me....haven't driven further than the Outer Banks, NC since I was a kid and I remember those signs. My ds will get a kick out of them. We stopped once and that was it...blech! It's still fun to see, though. Are the Stuckey's still all over?

Okay there is one sign in particular which ive always been curious (and disturbed) with. It is what looks to be a donkey...ahem, how to say this nicely...having quite a large bowel movement and the sign says "WHOOOOOAAA!"

Is this REALLY what im seeing??? ANybody know???? BTW nobody burn me for bringing up bowels...i just want my questions answered!!

I remember those signs from when I was a youngin' and my dad use to drive us to WDW. I use to want to stop and see what it was all about ... on the way back of course :teeth: ... Doesn't seem like I missed much though!

Lord do those SOTB signs bring back memories of countless car trips down to Florida. I use to love them as a kid! I always begged to stop there! It just seems so cool when you are 5 or 6! :sunny:

I'm going to Myrtle Beach in June and love those signs! ...but I know it is going to make me sick knowing that I can't keep driving south to my favorite place on earth!!!

As corney as this may sound, those signs are part of history and Americana. I've been reading and laughing at those SOB signs since the ripe old age of 8 when my family made it's first trip to Disney in 1975. It's always fun watching for them during the road trip.

Unfortunately the best part of the SOTB experience is the signs. We spent one night there, once. Operative word, once.

Slightly Goofy

We drove down in 1974 and that was the only thing that kept us from going crazy on the trip from boredom. Middle of July in a car with no air conditioning!

Love those signs! As a child we would drive to Florida to visit my Mommom every year the day after Christmas... That kept us going just waiting for the signs. :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

It seems that all the posters so far are much younger than me. The first time I saw those signs was in the 1950's. South of the Border was just a small roadside motel with a single store that sold lots of Mexican imports. The signs were pure genius - we HAD to stop on every trip (heading south to Miami and my grandparents house). This was long before there even was a Disney World.
We don't drive down anymore. It's much nicer and quicker to fly. So I haven't seen those signs in many years.

Boy, what memories. My grandma and grandpa and I stopped there every chance we got. Looking back, I can't believe they hung out at that place just for me. I loved it. They were too good.

I tell you what's really hard, though.

We drove down to the Keys twice. It was an adventure both times and we saw a lot of FLorida that we hadn't checked out before, but, going past WDW was a challenge. none of us discussed it, we just kept driving and ignored the signs... :rotfl:

It tickles me to read about ya'll finding these signs. I'm from NC, so they're nothing new to me. I know the place is hokey, but you've got to go up in the Giant Sombero at least once. It's also funny to me that people see them and think, "Wow, we're getting close to WDW!" For me, they mean I'm just getting started!!

WE ALWAYS DRIVE TO WDW FROM VA. IT'S GREAT BECAUSE WHEN WE GET TO PEDROS WE KNOW WE ARE HALF WAY THERE. AFTER ALL THESE YEARS I STIIL LAUGH AT THOSE STUPID THINGS. :teacher:

Having driven to WDW four times, from MA, by way of I95, I've seen those SOTB signs, but I can't remember any of them advertising WDW - what's the OP talking about?
