We are thinking of staying at SOB on our trip down in August... Anyone have any input for this campground? We stopped in one of their lots and had lunch on the way home last trip but didn't visit for long!
It is about 1/2 way fo us so seemed like a good choice.
Thank you

Guess I was tired last night... Should be South of the Border

I'm glad you asked, we too were wondering the same thing about the South of the Border Campground. Waiting for some info..........

We stayed here once, last Christmastime, and found it to be a fine place for an overnight. It was pretty cheap, and the bathhouses were well maintained, the grounds were neat, and it was surprisingly quiet and isolated from the buzzing neon that describes everything else Pedro! I would recommend bringing something to make for dinner, or picking something up from another exit as we found the food offerings from Pedro to be poor quality (bland) and high price. Other than that, I'd recommend Pedro's South of the Border campground and will stay there again should we need a stop that close to home. And, if you are traveling with kids, Pedro's has the benefit of advertising every couple of miles for 300 miles so the kids will always know how much further, and spotting Pedro's signs could be a fun pastime.

:santa:

I remember South of the Border to be a scary place. Never stayed in the campground..but the rest of it, kind of creeped me out. Hopefully it's changed.

Ah, South of the Border. The final resting place for every cheap souvenier ever made in the world.

I once had an NCO in my reserve unit that worked summers there as a kid refilling the vending machines. When my kids were little, I introduced him to them at an Army function and told them what he had done during the summers, and they were speechless. Later, my son said to me "Dad- that guy is FAMOUS!"

Pedro seez, "Chili today, hot tamale! You never sausage a place"

There's a KOA in Wade, NC that I've heard folks have been pleased with. It's right off I-95 at exit 61. Obviously, that's 61 miles north of Pedro.

Never stayed in the campground but on the way home during one of our Christmas visits to FtW we got hit with heavy rain all the way our first day headed home. I was tired of the white knuckle drive so we pulled over at Pedros in large part because their motel took pets. The motel reminded me of the 1960s era places we stayed in when I was a kid on our trips across route 66 from California to Oklahoma. Wild colored tile and orange carpeting. Old TV sets and antique plumbing. Heck it was a bed and it was dry so we made due. The one surprise was the steakhouse next door. Good steaks, a salad bar. We saw some of the locals dressed in their Sunday best coming in for dinner that Friday night. Pedro's is cheesy to be sure but if you aren't looking for something fancy your expectations will be met at SOB

OH and don't forget the other billboards. Our favorite: "KEEP YELLING KIDS! THEY WILL STOP!"

Exactly the same feeling for me, Phyllis. We stopped (not at their campground, only to "experience" SOB because we had heard so much about it) on our trip down this past April, and we found it very creepy, too.

It was probably really nice in its day but not as nice anymore we try for one of the KOA's either wade or sometimes rocky mount both are clean and perfect for overnites south of the border i'm sure would work also but just the whole place seems run down and way past it's prime just my thoughts
