DH and I lived in Simpsonville and both worked in Greenville for six years in the 1990's. We loved it! It was just the right size city for us - plenty to do in Greenville, but also 1 1/2 hours to Charlotte and 2 1/2 hours to the Atlanta (and about 3 1/2 hours to the beach). We had four seasons (winter was short, but we did get snow occasionally and it did get cold). There is a lot of industry in the Greenville/Spartanburg/Anderson area, so jobs were plentiful at the time (not sure about now). We lived there before we had kids, but we lived in a neighborhood with lots of kids and the parents said they were happy with the schools (we picked the neighborhood for resale value since we expected to be moved with DH's job).
There has been a LOT of growth since we left, but we still go back to visit family. We both agree that if we didn't live in Wilmington, we'd want to be in Greenville. Housing prices are WAY more reasonable in Greenville/Simpsonville/Powdersville than in Wilmington, but we do have the beach.
And no offense to the people in Spartanburg, but while the cities are close together and share an airport, the two cities are very different.

Greenville has more transplants and has more cultural amenities. Spartanburg retains more of the Southern country feel. Greenville was a much better fit for us. I travelled throughout the area for my work, and I enjoyed Greenville much more than Spartanburg or Anderson, which were both more rural. Different strokes, I guess.
