South Beach....Is This Doable?

So...the dr. told me yesterday I need to get on the South Beach Diet. This is rather scary, as I LOVE carbs!

But...If I start tomorrow, I will be at the end of Phase I on the day I arrive at WDW. How reasonable is it to expect to transition from PI to P2 while in WDW?

How easy is it to go through 11 days at WDW while at WDW? I assume I can do fine at the sit down meals, but the counter service is what may be a little difficult.

We also had planned on eating breakfasts in the room, and that may now be much more difficult as well.

Should I start tomorrow and go through with it, or wait till I get back and start then?

Any and all info/help is definitely appreciated!

There are other alternatives to the South Beach Diet. Personally I would never do a low carb diet (no offense to those that do), but I just don't believe in them.

You can acheive weight loss by simply counting calories. www.sparkpeople.com is great for tracking and it even tells you what your calorie range is by the questions it asks you.

By counting calories no food is off limit, but obviously whole clean natural foods are always your best choice. I think SB relies a lot on not eating any sugar and using artificial. I'd rather eat the real thing than artificial anyday. I just think artificial is unhealthy for you.

Anyway - just my opinion and I know plenty of people do it. I just find that it's hard to sustain low carb long term and it seems like mst people gain it back once they add carbs back into the system.

Thanks Melanie...but I have to do SB for more than just weight loss. There are other medical factors that are influencing the decision to go this route.

I did South Beach a few years back right before we went to WDW. I did lose about 12 lbs in 3weeks. Then we went to WDW. I have to say that I had no intention of trying to stay on the diet while there, and I didn't, but I didn't stuff myself too bad either. It was too hot to eat too much most days. Anyway, when I got back I went back to eating carbs, and immediately gained the weight back.

I think South Beach works, and in the Phase II if i remember correctly, you do add back some of your carbs like fruit and whole wheat pasta, but if you start eating the white stuff again, expect the weight to come back. It is meant to be a lifestyle change, just like other plans. If you go back to eating what you eat now, the weight comes back.

At WDW, I think it will be hard in most places to find the whole wheat stuff, but you might can just stay away from bread and such altogether while there. Study the menus at places you may eat, and get an idea before you leave what you can order there to stay on track. Bring snacks with you to the parks, that way you wont be tempted to buy stuff like a mickey shaped ice cream or something like that!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do. And have fun at WDW!

The short answer is YES, you can do Phase 1 and transition to Phase 2 while at WDW.

But the longer answer is...you can do ANYTHING, any plan, program, exercise schedule, etc. while at WDW (or an vacation anywhere for that matter) if you are committed to it. It will just take more planning.

Personally, yes, I did it myself. I hit WDW on day 13 of Phase 1. So I had to finish out Phase 1 and start Phase 2 while there. And I did it and LOST WEIGHT while there. (Due to sticking to SBD and all of the walking you do there.)

Like Melanie, I am no longer a fan of that program, so I don't follow low carb anymore. However I do understand that there are medical conditions that it really does benefit. It sounds like that is the category that fall into.

Best of luck to you! You CAN do it. You just have to think ahead and plan. Use the menus here on the DIS or on Deb's site and you will be well ahead of the game. Plan for food in the room (you can do eggs in a microwave), though if you are staying at DVC, things will be much easier.

Thanks for that. I actually did think about bringing a microwave just for that purpose!

Thanks for the suggestions...keep them coming please!
