South Beach Dieters......... Unite

Hi,

I am starting the South Beach Diet tomorrow but I have a few crucial questions...

It says that beets and carrots are off limits but the first day calls for veggie juice cocktail. The ones I've found have both beet and carrots in it??

Also, it says that milk is off limits but then it says you can have skim in your coffee (yuck, by the way)

What else have you used in your coffee that was O.K. during phase 1?

Help me...aaaggghhhh!

E.

Hi Elizabeth,

Welcome to WISH and The Beach!!! Yes the vegatable juice cocktail has beet and carrot juice in it, but, in comparison to other juices, you will probably find it to be pretty low on the glycemic index. As for the coffee - skim milk is okay for coffee, but you may want to try some fat free half-n-half instead. Or, don't use milk at all. Another recommendation is to be careful with caffiene and judge how your body reacts. Caffiene has proven to be a glycemic trigger to some folks, causing them to have cravings. I consider myself one of the lucky ones who is not affected by it. Even so, I have cut WAY back on my caffiene consumption. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

First trip ever in May? I'll tell ya, I have been to WDW more times than I can remember, and I get just as excited about each one. You are going to have a great time, and the weather in May can't be beat. We are heading to Ft Wilderness for 12 nights in the camper in June.

Welcome Elizabeth!

You will love it here on the Beach. I'm sure you will have a wonderful time at Disney too. It shouldn't be any problem to take off that extra weight before your trip. I wish you the best!

Sue - We love our DVC! Unfortunately, we find ourselves in a position where we might have to sell. It makes us sad but as adults you have to do what is best for your family. We have enjoyed yearly trips to Hilton Head, which is our home resort. Chef Gordon is awesome isn't he? We will get in a trip this summer to Disney and the one to Hilton Head in the fall and work with Shontell Crawford to sell our interest at the end of December. I keep telling myself there is life after DVC. There is life after DVC and with my weight loss, I am not quite as sad as I thought I would be. I guess my attention is diverted elsewhere!

Sherree - congrats on the will power at the wedding. And not being tempted by the cake either? Wow! Good for you.

Tracy - I use I can't believe it's not butter light. It melts and smells just like the real thing. Most importantly it tastes like the real thing. Hope this helps you!

Okay, gang, I weighed in this morning and only lost 1 pound this week. It's not bad but last week's 3 pounds was better. I eat so well on this program and I know I can expect to only lose between 1 and 2 pounds per week so I'm happy with it. I have lost a total of 31.5 pounds since December 1, 2003 so that's pretty good in and of itself.

Thanks Lisa, and congratulations on your pound! Every one counts!

Keep the faith!
Tracy

ZerasPride-congrats on the 1 pound. I know it sounds slow, but I would hate to lose nothing!!

The cake part was pretty hard. One was red velvet cake with all that yummy white cream icing. I even paid for the cake!!!! The other was a rich chocolate cake. It was hard, but I kept thinking where is that cake gonna land on me. I had a low carb piece of candy instead.

I have been having some serious issues lately. I took dd and her friend to Chuck E Cheese's yesterday. I ate pizza there. I love that horrible pizza there. Isn't that crazy. I also drank the first Diet Coke in quite a while. I had salad bar with good choices.

That wasn't good, but then it got worse. I took the three leftover pieces home, and ate them at about 10 pm. Very bad.....

I have spent the entire day in bed today, sleeping. Is it possible that all the pizza carbs and caffeine effected me this drastically. Either that or I am fighting some kind of illness. I just feel awful. I know I could go back up to bed and sleep some more. It is 7:30pm now. After dd gets in bed, I will go back to bed myself.

What do you think? How can I get my mojo back? I need to get it together quickly before I quit altogether.

Hi A,

I posted to your journal. I have read that many people can get a "carb hangover" and it sounds like that's what you've got.

Please don't give up! You can do this. You really can. I know you don't feel good right now but you can get past it. I like what someone put in one of their posts that there is little you can do to control outside forces but the one thing you can control is what you put in your mouth. Keep telling yourself that. I also think sometimes we want to find the magic diet program that is going to effortlessly get us to our goals. I don't think such a program exists. The "magic" does exist though, it exists inside us individually. Losing weight will never EVER get easier. While we have life, the wonderful support of our WISH friends and have been fortunate enough to find this program - let's do it. The opportunity to have this combination of forces all together at one time and in one place may never ever come again.

Look at it this way. Tomorrow and every tomorrow after that is going to come. The days will keep rolling by and they can either come and go with us doing something to better our health or not. Since the time is going to go by anyway, we might as well be doing something constructive for ourselves. Failure does not come from cheating. Failure comes from falling and staying down. You absolutely cannot fail if you continue to try. Just take it one day at a time. Don't worry about the next day and the next. All you have to do is get through one 24 hour day and be successful. Once you do that, you can do the next 24 hour day and so on and so forth until before you know it, months have gone by and you will find yourself staying on program out of habit and it no longer being such a struggle. But you have to start somewhere.

I hope this helps you out because you seem like a beautiful and kind person and you deserve to have the physical appearance you desire and more important you deserve to be happy and healthy for your daughter. Take care!

Hi everyone,
I was so glad to stumble on this thread. My family is booked on the Magic in June, and I definately don't want to be seen in a bathing suit! I have always been an active person, but am tired and run out of steam often. I would like to lose about 25 pounds before June to feel better, look better, and be able to do some snorkeling ect. Do you think it's possible on South Beach? My brother already has the book and wants to start too, and we have a treadmill available here at home, so there are no excuses. Any encouragement is welcome:wave2:
I figure if I check in here I will be encouraged to keep it going once I start.

Thanks so much.

DoomBuggieDriver- Welcome. I definately think it's possible to lose that weight by June. That's my goal to except I'm shooting for 35. I have a treadmill, bike and I love step aerobics. I will start working out this week. I was so tired the first two weeks on the SBD, but am feeling so much better. No carb cravings and my eating is under control. I love the flexibility and how healthy SBD is. Come here anytime you need support.

Hi Kathy!

Welcome to the Beach! This is a great program. Come here often for support and encouragement. I have a mini goal that I want to reach by June (25 pounds). We have 12 weeks from today to reach the first week of June so it definitely can be done. Let's do it together!

I have lost 32 pounds (as of this morning) and I started December 1, 2003. The food is delicious and if you drink plenty of water and exercise, I know you will reach your goal. Welcome again!

Thanks so much for the immediate encouragement. I am starting today, with the goal of doing the first two week plan plus exercising 30 minutes a day. I am afraid if I give myself days off from the exercise part, I'll never get into a routine and it'll be too easy to skip another day.

Thanks again.
Kathy:hyper:

So I figured I'd post here since I am getting very bummed. My first week i lost 5.8 lbs and was thrilled. My weigh in day is sunday. So saturday night I had a VERY upset stomach and spent hours and hours on the toilet. I'm not sure what caused it as DH ate the same stuff I did and managed to not get sick.

Anyway, you'd figure after my second week on Ph 1, working out 4 days that week (I just started going back to curves), screaming diahrrea the day before weigh in, I would show a loss and not a gain. It was sooo discouraging, but I gained 1 lb. I've decided to keep a food journal to make sure I am not eating too much (but my portions are not large, maybe 4-6 oz of protein, cooked size, and lots of veggies, a serving of fat) but I'm really bummed right now.

Of course I know it could be a million things. I know I am at that point in my cycle when I tend to retain water. I also just started working out after a several month hiatus and I know that can cause you to retain fluid around your muscles. I may have even gained some muscle, which can be offsetting the fat loss on the scale. Logically I know all of this, but after sticking to WW for 15 months and going on 6 month long plateaus even though I have sooo much to lose, I'm really afraid that NOTHING will work for me. I had such high hopes after the first week and even a loss of 1-2 lbs the second week would've been thrilling, but a GAIN was heartbreaking.

Can I pull up a chair on your Beach?

Hi! My name is Doris and I'm a carbohydrate addict. Pasta, rice, potatoes & bread are very good friends of mine (they're always hangind around {hips, waist, thighs}).

I tried Atkins about 6 years ago and lost 20 pounds but the cravings and mood swings were unbearable (I couldn't even stand myself!) and, of course, I gained it all back and then some.

Then I tried WW which also had me hungry, headachy and gaining when I should've been losing.

1/5/04 my SH and I both started on the South Beach Diet. I've lost at least 10 pounds so far. Best of all...NO CRAVINGS!!!

I'm 35y/o, 5'2" and currently at 222 with a BMI of 40.7! Yep...morbidly obese with a family history of heart disease, diabetes, HBP, and high cholesterol.

My first mini goal is to get down to 175lbs. WISH me luck!

It is definitely possible on South Beach. I started on Jan 05 and have dropped 23 pounds since then.

Best of luck,

I would bet that the reason you gained is due to the workouts. I am not familiar with the workout at Curves, but from what I can gather it is circuit training, yes? Four workouts have probably added some muscle mass to your body. Muscle will retain water more easily than fat, thus it tends to show up on the scale as an increase. It will pay dividends, however. Working your muscles to increase strength will cause them to burn more fat over time. The advantage to circuit training is you gain some aerobic benefit as well as strength training.

Have you noticed that your clothes fit better? That was the first indicator to me that I was losing - not the scale. I weigh myself every morning when I get out of bed and every evening before I get in bed and I have gotten pretty good at guesstimating, within a half pound, what will show up on the scale display. I didn't lose at all this past week, but I didn't gain either. I figure it is due to the lack of exercise (I am fighting a bad cold with tonsilitis right now). Sometime this week I will get back on the treadmill and the Total-gym clone that I have and get back to losing. Meantime, I am not discouraged and you shouldn't be either. It will come. I tell myself "I didn't add all these pounds in a week - I ain't gonna lose 'em all in a week either." :)

You are doing great - keep it up.

I want to thank everyone for the lovely welcome!::yes::

I have started the SBD officially today. It is afternoon and I am feeling a little full. I hope I am doing this correctly!

Thanks again for the welcome...

Wow! I'm so excited that I found this thread. My DH and I just passed our 6 month anniversary on SBD. At this point, we don't really consider it a diet anymore - it's just the way we eat now. For the first time ever, I feel that I'm in control of my weight and that it is possible for me to be (relatively!) thin. What impresses me with this eating plan is that it's healthy and satisfying. Gotta love my dark chocolate Dove Promises each night!

Good luck to everyone..... see you on the Beach!

Hi Everyone,

Well, I awoke this morning with a 1 lb loss which is water I know but it still gets me to within my healthy BMI...and it gives me encouragment to go on. I am on Day two of phase 1 so I am feeling a little odd today...not bad but off. I have been doing it since last thursday but only since yesterday for "real."

I think the reason I feel "off" is because I am not used to eating so much food and rich food at that...cottage cheese, nuts, mocha ricotta cream (yum) and meat. SOOOOO very different than WW.

I am feeling quite full although last night around 10 p.m. I felt like snacking...but didn't. :hyper:

Part of me can't quite believe this is going to work...lol. Kind of the too good to be true way of thinking but I am going to go by the book and see what happens!:teeth:

Oh, and I started an online WISH journal which is huge for me to actually be talking about all of this...::yes::

Have a great day!:sunny:

Thought I would check in today. I managed 45 minutes on the treadmill last night and did some weight training (legs) and crunches. I haven't started the diet yet as my brother hasn't handed over the book, but I will take care of that tonight. I thought I would at least start exercising. Thanks for the encouragement....
