Has anyone ever tried this program? I am reading the book and am considering it. "What are good carbs"? Where can I find them? What type of bread would I be able to eat once I completed Phase 1? Thanks for any info. If it is not too personal, please share specifics of your success.

I had a couple of friends on South Beach. Phase I is by far the hardest. The breads/pastas you can eat afterwards should be whole wheat.

I tried it for a week. I didn't really crave the carbs. But I did become very ugly, emotional and irritable at the end of the week - more than usual. I stopped the diet (I lost 5 lbs) and went back to being my old self (just sometimes ugly, emotional and irritable) LOL.

Try the WISH board. There is a SBD thread and there are some pretty knowledgeable people there.

Go the WISH Board! You'll get all of the info you need and more!

(I lost 20 pounds on South Beach from February through May and am maintaining now. Personally, I feel really good - better than I have in years - and didn't have any problems at all - even in Phase I. My mom is a diabetic and I don't want to become one. Essentially, this is how a diabetic should eat. I think that's why I feel so healthy now that I've changed my diet.)

if you work out (exercise) regularly - be VERY careful...I got VERY dizzy at the gym due to the lack of carbs in phase 1.

once you get through it though - it's pretty simple to follow. My father lost over 50lbs on it (no more beer gut - weird not seeing him w./ it) and my mom started in april/may and has lost 35lbs.

they both eat REALLY healthy now...it's not really a diet, more of a lifestyle change.

good luck!

Thanks for the quick responses and referral to WISH board. I had never been over there before and it seems like I can get alot of info on the South Beach thread.

I enjoyed your candid response, mickeyboat!

LOVE IT! I started this about 8 weeks ago, and have lost 20 lbs. I feel so much better, and my concern about developing Type II Diabetes has abated somewhat. I enjoy knowing that the food I put in my body is actually helping me, instead of making me overweight and unhealthy.

AND....the food is delicious. Just had the best White Chili for lunch. YUMMY!

I started South Beach at the beginning of February. I've lost about 25 pounds. Unlike previous attempts to diet, I'm not fixated on when this diet will be over; I figure I'll eat like this for the rest of my life. The problem I had that caused me to put on weight was that I was HUNGRY all the time. Not eating refined sugars really does seem to have solved that problem. I don't feel deprived, at all.

I eat a lot of whole grain breads and I found Dreamfields pasta to be delicious. Good luck!

I've been eating the SB way since 1/1/04. I've lost 40 pounds. Really the only things you're supposed to completely eliminate from your diet are the "white" foods (not cauliflower)..white flour, sugar, white potatoes...as well as other high sugar/starch vegetables (corn, beets, peas, carrots...although it's okay to have a small amount of raw carrots). Oh, and beer is a no-no. There really is a long list of vegetables that you can have from day one and it expands allong with the addition of more fruits and grains in phase two. You are not suppopsed to count carbs on this plan. Eat from the allowable foods list until you feel satisfied. How good, or bad, you feel in the first two weeks depends largely on how much refined sugars/carbs you were eating prior to beginning the plan. It's sort of like caffeine withdrawal...a little shaky and achy for a couple of days. Because you should be eating plenty of vegetables at this point, it isn't a lack of nutrition, but rather your body detoxing and getting rid of your sugar cravings.
