Has anyone done this? I just bought the book today and it looks interesting.

I am not knocking it Jill...but I read an article in Woman's Day about it...and it really peeved me.

The article made the South Beach Diet sound like it was the Revolutionaly NEW diet. It is almost exactly like Atkins. The article then had the NERVE to call the Atkins diet a "fad" diet.

I was sooo annoyed by it that I never finished reading it...But I am sure that it would work only because it seems SO similar to Atkins.

Good Luck...and let me know how it goes if you decide to do it!!

Jill-I am getting ready to try it-it looks better to me than Atkins for the long term. Read the book-South beach is "almost exactly" like Atkins for the first two weeks only! And I have read all three of Dr Atkins books, the South beach book and done a ton of academic research into evolutionary diet. This diet does not rely on ketosis and goes along way to teach you the difference between "good" and "bad" carbs, does a great job of explaining why your gain weight beyond just calories. Except for the fact that it allows whole grain bread after the first phase it looks a little more like evolutionary diet than most lo carb plans. You will likely not be in ketosis after the first two weeks.-remember that if you think that is the only way to loose weight. It allows you some flexibility in what you eat and is probably easier to stick with long term and will have less rapid rebound weight gain if you slip up than Atkins. I like it because it is lower carb with out ketosis-I know enough about human biology to feel like, even though it is not dangerous, long term ketosis (I would like to loose 75 lbs) is not something I want to do to my body.
I have also been going to Curves-I have not been a part of the WISH team but I guess I fit the profile so where do I sign up?

jsmith I'm so glad you want to sign up. Just post to this thread HERE

JESW Will you be joining us too? Please say yes. You just can't have too many members in a support group, can you?

The neat thing about WISH is that all different kinds of eating plans are represented here. We all still manage to help keep each other motivated and successful.

WISH has been very helpful to me.

I'm reading the book right now. I'm considering switching to it.

DH is doing Atkins. I'd like a plan closer to DH's as meal planning would be easier. I don't have anything against Atkins, it's just not for me. Atkins requires eating alot of fat. I'm not a big fat eater. Don't care for Mayo, ect.

South Beach uses less fat and more carbs. (whole grains, fruit and vegs.) It still keeps away from refined carbs. I'm thinking I could do this, DH stay with Atkins and I could make dinner that will work for the whole family.

I haven't finished the book, but so far it hasn't made any statements like the Women's Day article.:D

Diane, choosing the eating plan that is right for you is key to being successful. It doesn't matter what plan you choose, just so you choose one and stick with it (in the long run), right?

I agree with you 100%, Kath. What's happening is I'm not sticking with my plan.:( Trying to get dinner together, I find myself doing part my plan/part Atkins. That's why I'm looking at South Beach. It looks like something I might be able to do and stick with! Something that will fit into my lifestyle as well as my eating style.

I haven't decide yet if I'm going to change. Buz & I are going on vacation to visit family next week. I'm going to think about it while we're gone. If I change I'll start when we get back.

I think you are very wise to look for a different plan that you can live with, once you find the right one you will be happier and more successful.

My husband and I bought the book last weekend and started 4 days ago after a trip to the grocery store together. It sure is easier when your spouse goes on the diet with you (even though I sometimes get frustrated because he can eat more, but loses weight faster:mad: ) We have done the Atkins diet a few times, but not been able to stick it out more than a month. The dangerous part for us has been keeping the Atkins eating habits and then combining it with carbs! The reason we feel so positive about the South Beach diet is it seems more realistic and healthy for us. I never could really embrace the idea of eating all that fat and feeling good about it (even if I was losing weight). I like the concept of good carbs/bad carbs and good fat/bad fat. It just seems like good practical sense. I also think that if we "fall off the wagon", it will be less damaging and easier to get back on. So far we have not had any cravings and I have not gone through the usual shakiness and headaches the first week that I always experienced with Atkins. I like not reaching for fattening foods to graze on. Also, I never felt like I had enough energy to exercise on Atkins (I know they both promote it's not necessary to exercise, but we're looking for an all around healthier lifestyle). We have both been doing the treadmill and feeling great:Pinkbounc :bounce:

BTW, for the longest time (until this week - maybe it's a sign) I never new what WISH was all about. I don't know why I never clicked on it:D I still haven't found out what it stands for, but I think it's great. I am definitely considering signing up.

Good luck to you all!!

I'm glad you decided to visit. How interesting that the South Beach Diet is the same during the first two weeks as Atkins, yet you didn't have any withdrawal symptoms. That's just wonderful.

Sounds like you have found the right plan for you and your husband. It is easier to follow an eating plan when your husband follows the same plan. My husband and I both follow the Atkins plan. We started on 1/9/03. We haven't had a refined carbohydrate since that day and we don't miss them at all. My husband has had wonderful medical improvement since changing to this way of eating.

Will you be taking the challenge? I sure hope so. You would make a great addition to our support group.
