Hello all!

Has anyone done the South Africa trip? I'm contemplating doing this trip in 2015 and I'm looking for thoughts on the trip.

Thanks!

We did this trip in 2010 and it was amazing. My children, who were 9 and 12 when we went, loved every second and would go again tomorrow.

There are very comprehensive trip reports on DISBoards on this trip which helped us plan our trip. Reading them will answer any questions you may have.

I've been looking at South Africa recently. How early are you waking up in the reserves? We can only handle waking up and getting ready before dawn for so many days before the vacation starts turning into work. In SE Asia, we did a couple of super early mornings for alms giving and tai chi, but too many in a row might be a bit much.

I feel the same way! I am *so* not a morning person!

The days in the reserves are actually very relaxing. Yes, you get the wake up call around 5:30 am, and you are out from 6-10, but then you come back, shower, have a great breakfast, relax, eat lunch, relax, and repeat from 4-8 with dinner after and by 10 pm or so everyone is back in bed. It was one of the most peaceful, relaxing experiences of my life.

I was afraid of that. That does sound cool, but no breakfast until after 10am? Aren't you starving by the time you get back? I'm useless without my protein & coffee, especially at 6 in the morning! And a late dinner & early bedtime is so not good for my reflux! This may just not be the trip for me, as amazing as it sounds otherwise.

You do get to eat before you leave. You meet at 6 or so and have coffee/tea/ juice and muffins or scones - something light. The reserve we were at also did a mid safari snack - a few hours in you would have a coffee/tea break in the mornings and a drink of your choice break in the afternoons. They usually had a little snack too. Trust me, you won't be hungry or not feeling totally pampered for a minute!

Congrats, Ron Nelson! I've added you to the Roll Call in the Meets thread for this trip. If you'd like, let me know the makeup of your traveling party, and I can update the Roll Call.
