Sound of DCL horn - is it loud? Will it scare the kids?

I know this is such a silly concern, but I have found that my kids are not really into sudden, loud noises. Take, for example, fireworks - just too much for them to tolerate at times. I am wondering how loud the horn is on the DCL, and how often it sounds? Hopefully they'll love the "wish upon a star" theme and all that, but I am not sure how to best deal with this slight dilemma.

Thanks in advance for any tips!!

It is pretty loud up on deck 10. Not too bad anywhere else. They announce a warning on the speakers up there before they sound the horn so the kids can cover their ears if they want to.

They typically sound the horn once when leaving ports and at noon on sea days.

Check with a member of the crew member to find out where not to be when the horn goes off.

Thanks for the heads up... gonna make sure not to plan nap at that time! ;)

We were up on deck 10 for the sail away party right by the horns themselves. The first time they play the horn, there will be a count down from 10 as the ship leaves the dock. The only other time it plays is when the ship reaches the end of the canal and heads out to open water leaving Port Canaveral.

I have a 9yr old who also hates loud sounds. We just told him when the horn was sounding so he wouldn't be surprised and he was fine; he didn't even cover his ears.

Is it loud? Yes, kind of, but in my opinion not loud enough to startle anyone if they know it's coming...it won't hurt your ears!:rolleyes1

You can't hear the horn when you are in your stateroom...at least I never have. Didn't know my watch had stopped while I was unpacking and missed sailaway! :sad2: Though I'm sure you could hear it from your verandah.

.

of course in case of emergency you will get no warning that the horn will go off

!!!!!!! how did you manage that! :sad1:
Thats sad.

One our first DCL cruise we were up on Deck 10 with the kids (who are VERY sensitive to loud noises)!! We didn't even hear the announcement because the wind had picked up (or we weren't paying attention!) :lmao:

My DS (4 at the time) jumped up so fast into DH's arms that DH almost dropped him!!! :scared1::scared1: DH couldn't put him down for amost an hour!!

This is a pic after we calmed him down...needless to say after that we paid close attention to the announcements and I agree with PPs. We only heard it LOUD on deck 10...other than that, it was never an issue. Although DS sis spend the rest of the trip asking us if the horn would scare him again :rotfl:

It depends on a couple of things.
First, there is no set schedule of the horns being blown. Sometimes theyll use them every so many buildings on the way out of the channel, sometimes theyll get into a horn battle with another ship.Noon on sea days is a good bet.The last cruise I was on, they used them everytime the either left a dock, or arrived at a dock.
When you go to the Adventurers Away(Formerly the Sail Away Party) party, if you can stand on deck 9 under the overhang from deck 10, the sound should be muffled even more by the steel. When your on deck, as long as your behind the foward funnel theyll be muffled. On the lower decks, and on verandahs etc., theyll be muffled also.9 times out of 10 theyll make an anouncement.

to answer an unasked, but related, question -- how loud are the fireworks?

not as loud as land-based fireworks. It seems to be that the land-based fireworks always have a second loud bang after the display shell explodes -- my guess is that the second bang is some sort of backup to make sure the shell explodes in the air and doesn't land unexploded on the ground. I've never noticed the second bang on the DCL fireworks -- and I'm guessing that a backup is not needed since any unexploded shell would just fall into the sea.

I will second the concern about not hearing the announcement if the wind is blowing. Right after I had a very relaxing hot stone massage I decided to go out on deck and get some sun lying in a lounge chair, which just happened to be unbeknownst to me right under the horns! The wind was blowing, I faintly heard what sounded like someone talking on the PA but couldn't make it out, so no biggie I thought. Then the horns went off :scared1: and gone was that peaceful state of mind that was just induced by the hot stones. Lesson learned and nothing that wasn't fixed by downing a few martini's at the martini tasting a bit later.

Me too:thumbsup2 Especially when your at Quite Cove. I have to cover my ears.

They also play it at noon on sea days, there is a warning but you usually can't hear it.

Was just going to post the same thing!!! Whenever we are in the hot tub by the Quiet Cove Pool it is still a shock when the horn goes off...it is very loud in that area of the ship!!

I didn't think the horn was too loud until one day I was walking on deck 10 and I guess I was standing at the exact spot the sound comes out and it pretty much scared the crap outta me. :scared:
Funny thing is that my daughter laughed at me cause I got scared. :rotfl:

This just makes me laugh, but a medical treatment is making me kinda batty right now so if it's not as funny as I think it is please excuse.

DH is not really a Disney fan but went on the cruise to humor me. The night before we were visiting Manatee park in PC and heard the 'When You Wish Upon a Star,' notes. He stopped dead in his tracks and looked at me...."What.Was.That?" ..."Um..the ship's horn?" "Just shoot me now.":rotfl:
