SOS to Google Classroom Teachers

With the year coming to an end, it's time to think about reusing the year's worth of homework for next year's class.

I've never met a FP I didn't like - and I can wrangle 'em till the cows come home (or until Change Party really goes away).

But Google Classroom is my Boogie Man. Be it early mornin' late afternoon, I can't figure out how to reuse my class.

If you copy the whole class, it will bring over all last year's student results from any quizzes, etc. That is, if it doesn't drop off the attachments. It definitely drops off all the audio links. And with an ESL class, I have a LOT of audio attachments. Being a really hard and very mean teacher, I also have a LOT of homework. Sometimes six things a night.

Which means that "reuse post" is a nightmare. You can only reuse one at a time. You can get a clean copy of any quizzes, which is great. And it holds on to all the attachments, which is great. But scrolling down through hundreds of assignments in order to fish up one at a time takes hours.

Is there another way?? DISfolk are so smart and resourceful. Someone must have figured this out?

P.S. Has anyone ever cooked shrimp in an air fryer? I'm thinking it won't save time.

I’ve been using google classroom for 5 years and haven’t figured it out. Sorry.

Isn't all your assignments saved on your drive? Everything that I attach to assignment posts in my google classroom can be found in my drive in nicely labeled folders. It doesn't take me long to locate the files I'm looking for and to create a new post. I don't think there is a way to copy a classroom the way you want to.

You're right, everything is on Drive. I was just hoping to avoid re-linking all the attachments. I have nearly 2000 homework posts - almost all with attachments.

It's probably too late for you now, but I create all my assignments as Google Docs and then attach them to basic instructions in Classroom that say "Use the attached Google Doc for your assignment"

I can’t answer your question because I’m still figuring out the ins and outs of Google Classroom myself. I’ve had a couple of doozies lately. I’ve been setting up quizzes using GC quiz assignments and Google Forms for the last 3 weeks with no problems. Then this past week, the settings on 2 of my quizzes changed, and I didn’t change them. Those two quizzes allowed multiple attempts, so the “import grades” button never showed up even after I fixed the setting. So I thought I’d just have to look at each quiz individually and manually score them. Nope! The collect Gmail addresses box was unchecked as well, so while I could see scores, I had no idea who took each quiz. What a cluster!!! I was so mad! I had to throw them out, recopy the quizzes, change the settings, and have the kids retake them. Now I double check all the settings when I set up a quiz. I still have no idea why they randomly changed.

Then I have one particular student who clicks “Turn In” but deletes the google doc assignment I attached. When I want a student to do an assignment in GC, I make a google doc for it, set up the assignment, attach the google doc and click “make a copy for each student”. The student types in the doc, turns it in, and I type any corrections in the doc, put in the grade and hit return. This kid can not get it right. Today she deleted a quiz! She deletes the doc every single time!!!! And she does this for multiple teachers. We can’t figure out if she’s that stupid or just sneaky (I did the work and turned it in. What do you mean you don’t have it). This is the same student who during the regular school year accused teachers of losing her work or other students of stealing her work when a teacher said she didn’t turn it in. Now the internet is losing her work. I’ve even tried making her a copy in google docs, sharing it with her directly and telling her to share it with me when she’s done instead of going through google classroom. And I still don’t get the completed work. Argggg!!!

So I could embed audio clips into a doc instead of adding them to the assignment itself. But I'd still have to attach the Google doc. And I'd really like a good way to reuse all those assignments with attached Google docs so I don't have to recreate them year after year.

That's so weird that the settings randomly changed. Do you share the classroom with another teacher who might have inadvertently changed things?

I skip the collection of gmail addresses and start every quiz with the mandatory question "Your name is ..." I really like that the quizzes are self-correcting and that you can add in a feedback message for a particular (predictable) wrong answer. Considering Google Classroom is free, it's an incredibly great tool.

Students are getting creative with distance learning strategies!

I've followed many question threads about this issue on support.google - but their only suggestion is to use "reuse post" which would only be useful in a classroom with a handful of assignments.

I haven't embedded audio clips, but I embed links in my Google docs all the time. You then attach the Google Doc and change the setting to "make a copy for each student" otherwise the students can edit your doc.

That's smart. Can I ask what you put in the docs? Short essay questions or other compositions?

Most often, I use quizzes. It's really frustrating that you can't embed audio clips right into the quiz. Only YouTube videos. You can convert an audio clip to a video clip and upload to YouTube, but it's pretty time consuming.

I'm an elementary Librarian, so my Docs are usually a link to someone reading a book aloud on Youtube and then some questions about the book.
