Okay, I'm REALLY interested in renting some DVC points from someone who offered through this board.

But, I'm also really scared to do it. How do you guys do it with peace of mind? Not sure how to go about this and know that others out there have done so and that the wonderful DISers would be able to tell me how!!
So, basically, how do you make sure you're getting what you paid for??

Hi Patsy! Basically, for renting to a non-DVC member, most (if not all) members require a significant downpayment up front, then mail you the reservation. The member maintains control over the reservation at all times, and can cancel the reservation if the renter doesn't live up to his/her end of the bargain (which usually requires payment in full by around 40 days prior to the check-in date, so that they know the check has cleared not later than 30 days prior to check-in, at which time your points would have some pretty major restrictions attached to them--some feel they're practically useless at that point). I've never heard of any DVC member ruining a renter's vacation out of meanness--if the renter pays on time, the member will perform! It usually works out beautifully. If it's a member-to-member transfer of points, it's even easier. Borrowing members pay in full, and then the "renting" member calls Member Services and asks for the points to be transferred--done deal. The only issue I know of comes up when people don't watch their "use year," and the points either don't apply yet at the requested DVC property (11 versus 7 months of the requested reservation), or if a renter cancels late. Be sure that everything is written out clearly, so that there's no misunderstanding as far as due dates, amounts, etc. Good Luck to you!
