Sorry, no ham this year!

I just looked up pictures of the tofurkey to see what one looked like. Yuck!! I'm glad my MIL served real turkey and ham last night.

Would the vegetarians be offended if there was meat on the table? If that was the case she could have made meatless spaghetti or pizza. Spaghetti probably would have worked for a side dish too.

Jeez, my mom at least had sandwiches.

Only one per person though -- just enough cold cuts for that. We made fun (behind her back of course) of the whole sandwich idea, but at least it was real meat and not tofu.

Tofu is OK. I haven't been brave enough to cook with it, other than to cut some up into soup, but when I've eaten it at restaurants I like the texture and the flavor, which it picked up from the sauces of the food.

Tofurkey might be OK. I'd have to try it. Perhaps the MIL feels that she has been taken for granted and this is her way of protest. Before the day of the meal, the dishes for the meal should have been worked out with each person who was bringing something, especially with the person bringing the main dish. For a side dish it wouldn't be so important to check ahead of time, but there are usually several side dishes.

Can you stuff a tofurkey? ;)

I'd be willing to try it but I'd hope that no one would be offended if a person didn't like it. I dislike tofu and can't imagine liking a tofurkey. I'd have to fill up on side dishes.

Apparently only 4 people out of the 20 (2 being the vegans) there had Tofurkey... the rest only ate side dishes. Jill did try it and said it was disgusting. Next year I bet she has a ham in her fridge. :teeth:

if it were'nt for tofurkey my dh and i probably never would have gone on our first date :goodvibes

my dh was raised seventh day adventist (traditionaly vegan's), while he and his parents later added meat to their diets some of his siblings have remained vegans and serve only vegan meals in their homes. around the time we met and he was trying to convince me to date him (i resisted due to being older than him) thanksgving fell. he went to his brother's house where they served tofurkey slices rolled up and filled with stuffing (i should add-some tofu products are very tasty-some are just plain nasty even to the diehard vegan). dh called my home (i lived with my mom) wished us a happy thanksgiving and then plaintifly asked "what are YOU eating for dinner"? i was "um, turkey-why what are you eating". he explained and then wished us a good evening. my mother asked who had called, when i told her who and what he had said she told me "if you won't go out with that poor boy at least take him a real turkey dinner to him at work tomorrow".

long story short, my mom made him up a plate with all the trimmings which i took to him at work the next day. we went out on our first date a week later, and now some 17 years later we will celebrate (with the kids) our 15th anniversary in march

suffice it to say, may of my bil/sil's and their kids are vegan-we always prepare meals with food that will appeal to everyone. while they do not serve meat products in their homes, they at least do not serve any food items made from soy products to us (instead they will do vegitarian lasagna or eggplant parmesant) because they recognize that some of the items they enjoy are truly an aquired taste.
