Sorry Charley we’re here to have Fun! (Sorry so long)

Cast includes: Dear Husband 39, Myself 39, Dear Son 14, Dear Niece 10
Destination: WDW / Fort Wilderness
Dates: Aug 8 - Aug 17

We left the Eastern Shore of Maryland on Saturday Aug 7 at 4am and stopped at the Savanna South KOA in GA. Sunday morning we were on the road again headed for our favorite place Fort Wilderness. We thought it would be an easy ride (be at the Fort by 1:30), we were wrong -- lots of road construction in GA on 95 and lots of rain. We hit I4 and again RAIN, RAIN, RAIN and road construction. We did arrive about 3:30pm. We heard later on the news that Dayton had 9” of rain this weekend (WOW).

Waited in the check in line for about 15 min, got all our information, tickets, movie schedule, etc and headed to our lot. We requested loop 1400 and our wish was granted. We had lot 1432 -- GREAT lot, easy back in and lots of room. For anyone out there that will have a large camper this is a great lot, we have a 34’ 5th wheel with 3 slides and a one ton duel wheel crew cab truck so we are long (almost 50’ total) and we had room for everything included the golf cart. We were so near the campfire program that you could see the movie screen. Every morning we had a rabbit that would pop over to say hello and eat the grass right outside our door, and a group of young ducks (about 7) that stopped by if we were outside -- they did the “Please, please feed me I’m starving” routine. They would just hang out with us, sit on our rug while we drank our coffee in the morning. Like I said a really GREAT lot!

Sorry -- Now back to:

Sunday, Aug 8th -- after we got everything set up at the camper, the kids had settled down, the AC was kicking, DH and I went to the bike barn to pick up our golf cart. We ran back over to the trailer, picked up the kids and headed for the boat and MK. We knew we were not going to be able to do to much, we just wanted to go over. We did Buzz a couple of times and the TTA (where we saw Space Mountain with the lights on) and just walked around to see everything and of course we had to get a Turkey Leg. We needed to get to bed early so we could still function tomorrow.

Monday, Aug 9th -- MGM -- the new bus system had us a little confused, we waited at the wrong stop for about 10 min finally I asked a driver and was told to go to the other bus stop near the petting zoo. We got to MGM at about 10am. Late but it all worked out. We did the big rides TT & RRC first saw Beauty and the Beast, Indy and a couple of other smaller things. We headed back to the trailer about 1:30 for a rest because Fantasmic is tonight! When we got ready to head back to MGM it started to rain HEAVY, which was great because when we got there everyone was leaving. Fantasmic was in a holding pattern for awhile (actually the show started then stopped right after Mickey hit the stage). Finally the show did go on and it was GREAT! We stayed in the theater for a little while to let the RUSH go, we were surprised at how much trash was left behind -- it looked like everyone forgot there were trash cans at the top of each stairway, waited no time for a bus and headed home happy. When we got to the trailer there was no electric. FW had people at the comfort station letting everyone know they were having problems (10 loops were without power) and they would get everything fixed as soon as they could -- they were more worried about the Contempory Hotel, they had a roof leak / failure and at that time they were more worried about that (I can totally understand). The electric came back on around midnight.

Tuesday, Aug 10th -- Typhoon Lagoon / IllumiNations -- Our plan was to have breakfast at Trails End, relax, hit the water park at about 1. Well Trails End was great as ever, all the food was hot and plentiful, replaced when low and staff was friendly. After breakfast we headed into the arcade for DS and DN and the rocking chairs for DH and myself then on to the Typhoon Lagoon bus, we were told that the park was closed to any more guest until 2 -- so we headed over to the petting farm (good thing we have a golf cart!). We headed back to the bus stop at about 1 hopped on a bus was at Typhoon Lagoon at about 1:10 walked in and had little to no wait for everything. It was great! We swam with the sharks (DN chickened out at the last min) so it was just DH and DS -- they loved it! We did all the slides that we wanted to and of course the lazy river (which wasn’t that lazy with the kids running/splashing/pushing along the way) but hey it’s WDW. DS talked DN into the shark swim so we tried it again, this time she did go in and swam all the way across (very quickly), I did not enjoy the snorkel “oh my god, I can’t breath” effect but got through it. My opinion is that it is nice, cold but nice. DS wanted to do the “scuba” class but we were getting ready to leave decided we would hit it later in the week. Everyone loved the wave pool! Everyone came home, showered and ate dinner then we headed over to Epcot for IllumiNations. As usual it was great, I don’t think the kids were over the top about it but they really liked the fireworks! We also did Spaceship Earth with no line at all.

Wednesday, Aug 11 -- MK and E-night -- We knew we were going to do E-night so we decided to ride the rides that were not included on E-nights. We rode just about everything we wanted to and then some. We arrived at about 9:30 and really did not encounter to great a wait time for most things -- sure it was busy, it’s summer but with fast pass everything is possible. We returned to the trailer for lunch, rest and dinner. Got back to the MK at about 7pm -- we had our plan about were to go to get our E-night bands with little wait because we knew the station on Main Street would be toooooo crowded, well guess what - no crowds approximately 3 people were in front of us. Got our bands and headed into the park. We were very happy we had rode Big Thunder during the day because it was down when we got there. The place was empty (or at least it felt like that) after 10:45. We did everything, of course with no wait, stayed until 1pm. We saw the SpectroMagic Parade, but missed some of the Wishes fireworks because we were in HM. OH if you have not see the Philharmagic show -- YOU ARE MISSING THE BEST 3D SHOW AROUND!!! This show it so different than your normal 3D shows -- no blur, very clear and crisp -- Everyone loved it! We took our boat ride home, jumped in (or stumbled to) the golf cart got to the trailer and guess what we have a letter taped to our door “Hurricane Charley” may be headed our way. FW will keep us informed.

Thursday, Aug 12 -- Disney Quest / Downtown Disney / Rainforest Café -- After our very late night it felt very good to sleep in. We did get moving around 11 and headed for Disney Quest. We get off the bus and head straight for DQ and guess what it doesn’t just start to rain it dumped buckets on us and I didn’t bring the ponchos (why would we need ponchos we are going to be inside). So we arrive at DQ soaked, step in AC and of course our teeth start to chatter! No really we had a very good time here - I had originally planned for us to go to Blizzard Beach also but the kids and DH were having so much fun that we just stayed there until about 3. Everyone had to get cleaned up we are going to the Rainforest for dinner. The place was mobbed we had a 1.5 hour wait (which was ok we just did a little shopping) the food was ok (ordered steaks med rare, arrived at the table very rare, we did send them back for a little extra time on the grill) everyone was very full and ready for bed when we left. Guess what, when we got back to the trailer we had a notice taped to our door. “Hurricane Charley is headed for Orlando and they may have to close FW”. Now what do we do? Just wait and see. Being from the East Coast we understand the damage a hurricane can deliver so DH and I start to get things ready for a move -- coolers away, chairs away, carpet away, pack clothes in a small bag (DS x-box carrier bag) just in case.

Friday, Aug 13th -- Hurricane Charley -- Guess what, another notice. This time the knock on the door and hand deliver it. They will be shutting down Fort Wilderness and all guest must evacuate to Port Orleans French Quarter by 9am. We get everyone us and moving early, hook up, pull out and head for the front gate to a traffic jam. Everyone was asked if they were going to the hotel or not. We thought that maybe we would be away a day or so -- no big deal we can deal with that! We just followed everyone else to POFQ, found a parking space, put the jacks down, grabbed our bag and the clothes on hangers (I kind of felt like the Beverly Hillbillies -- checking in without a suitcase) and headed for the registration desk. WHOA -- what a line and it is getting longer by the second. I have the kids sit down in a couple of chairs with all our “stuff” to wait for us, then jump back in line with DH. We only waited 30-45 mins for check-in which with the amount of people in line I thought was not that bad. We were in building 7 (good thing our truck was parked in lot 7). We had a very nice guy from Silver Springs, MD checking us in -- they said they only had about 15 min notice that the campers were on their way, so they were doing the very best they could. We got to our room put everything away, brought some drinks and water in and turned on the weather channel. Yep it is headed our way! The parks closed at 1 so we did not get to do any parks today. At dinner time we headed for the food court - WHOA -- what a line, so DS, DN and I wait. I send DS to get a chicken quesidea (sp?) and they no longer have any so he gets a chicken Caesar salad (which was just ok) DN and I wait in the pizza line (they have different lines for everything). We were about 5 people from the window when a CM yells out that Disney is under a security level 2 and when they get to level 1 all guest must return to their rooms. Well we get to the window and order our food a personal pizza, 2 chicken parmesan and a meatball sub, just then the CM yells that they are now at level 1 and all guest must return to their rooms -- believe me there was a lot of noise after that. With food running out and people standing in line for 30 min and then being told they had to leave -- well I just grabbed my food went to the register and fainted when she told me “that will be $45.00”. We packed up and headed to the room -- I let DH know that we were to stay in our rooms, etc. About 15 min later CM were at the door with another notice about keeping the blinds and curtains closed and if necessary moving to the furthest part of the room. They also dropped off flashlights. We kept an eye on the news but watched all the movies they had running to keep the kids occupied. DH did go out a couple of times just to check on things. We were very blessed - as it turned out we were on the “easy” southwest side of the hurricane so we did not experience the damage that other areas received. Everything was over by about 9:30pm. DH and I were talking and the wind was not as bad as they were saying on the news (at least where we were). Everyone from home was calling to check up on us, they were watching the weather channel and it sounded a lot worse than what we had. Checked on the trailer, no damage -- whoops, what was that noise -- a bus running over a tail light cover -- Gosh, I wonder who that belongs to? You guessed it -- US! Oh well it could have been a lot worse!

Saturday, Aug 14th -- Epcot -- We had planned to visit Animal Kingdom but due to the weather it is closed along with all water parks and pools. So today with only 3 parks open, we choose Epcot more room to move. The bus service from POFQ was very slow and over crowded - standing room only! Yuck! The hotel did say if you have your own vehicle take it, but DH did not want to unhook and then try to hook up later with the crowd in the parking lot. So it was the bus for us -- we finally did get there and DH ran over to pick up FP for Test Track and received a surprise FP for Honey I Shrunk the Audience. Checked out some of the indoor things, saw Figment, did HISTA, now everyone is hungry -- head to the WORLD! We get ½ way there and it starts to rain -- the ponchos are in the trailer. Charge it 4 ponchos please! And we are off again. It was time for TT so we headed there with the intentions to come back to the world, well TT was closed, electrical problems -- not sure when it will be up and running again. We really did not get to see much of the world, everyone was pretty tired from staying up to late last night, so we head back to the hotel.

Information was hard to come by unless you walked to guest services and asked in person. The phone was clogged, you got on hold and just seemed to stay there. Too many people trying to get info all at the same time I guess.

Sunday, Aug 15th -- Animal Kingdom -- Before we went anywhere we had to go to the front desk and have new key cards made because we were going to be at the hotel longer than they had programmed the 1st card for -- they let us know that we may be able to return to FW on Monday. I knew then and there what I would be doing tonight -- laundry! It is HOT and crowded but it is August and everyone has to be somewhere! We headed for the river rapids and it was closed, not sure when it will open back up -- oh well - NEXT. We did see Tarzan Rocks which it did and we could not miss Lion King it was just Awesome! We did a few rides, tried to keep as cool as possible and then went to get rotisserie chicken - WHOA, what a line -- it was very good. DS was really bummed out that he was not going to get to do the “scuba” class at Typhoon Lagoon, we let him know that if the park opened we would go. Still not a happy camper.

Monday, Aug 16th -- Epcot and Typhoon Lagoon -- DH stayed to take the camper back to FW (they said we could move back after 12) and I took DS and DN to Epcot. We went straight to TT and got FP with a surprise to HISTA. No one wanted to do Mission: Space. We did Ellen’s show and Ice Station Cool then headed over to TT -- we had a great time! DH called to let me know that he was set up and on his way to Typhoon Lagoon with all our stuff. So off we went to the bus stop to Saratoga Springs jump off that bus and hop on to the Typhoon Lagoon bus. DH calls to let me know the scuba classes are not running today -- very bummed out now! But I think the wave pool cheered all of us up. We decided that we would make this a light day, we had to leave tomorrow and it was going to be a long ride day. When we got back to the trailer we found a letter from Fort Wilderness thanking us for our patience during the storm along with a FW pin and a smores kit. While dinner was cooking I took DN over to the Magic Kingdom to do a little shopping for the family at home. After dinner we hit the campfire so we could use that smores kit -- Lion King was the movie. At about 9 I took DN to the beach to see the water parade -- either we were to late or they just didn’t run it because we did not see it, we did see the Wishes fireworks from the beach, it was great. What a nice way to finish your last day at the Fort.

Tuesday, Aug 17th -- We had everything packed up and ready to go so when the kids got up we only had to pile them into the truck and hit the road (believe it or not, I’m ready to see home). We ran up 95 and saw a lot of signs down - DH says they are designed to “break” at a certain point that is why they all broke at the same place on the poles -- I guess you learn something new all the time, I did not know that, I just thought it was odd that they all broke right were the sign stopped on the poles. We drove until about 5pm and stopped in Florence, SC at the KOA.

Wednesday, Aug 18th -- We are almost home now and it isn‘t raining here (yet) -- We pull in to our driveway about 4:30pm and it feels great to home -- Now I need to start planning our next trip to WDW! We really love Disney -- it really is the best place for a vacation. We had rain just about every day (but that is a summer thing, right?). Even with the hurricane we had a great time. I think the staff at FW did a great job!

I hope everyone else had as much fun as we did that was there during Charley and everyone is safe!

sounds like Disney had everything under control except the food......thanks so much for telling us your experience with the Hurricane and also your great vacation......

My sis, husband and family were also at PO during Charley. They thought the hotel did a wonderful job during such a traumatic time. Staff even slept over so that guests would still get some type of service the next morning. Movies were a great help and keep the little ones minds off Charley. BIL took video of storm from door of hotel room until Sis told him to close door and get the heck inside. They left Sat. morning to go over to parents condo in St. Petes. Took 3 hours (normally 1 hr trip) to get their as everyone was returning to their homes.

Sounds like you had an amazing and interesting trip.
