What the heck were those boys thinking? :confused3

Looks like they weren't thinking at all. :confused3 I do like the sooners as long as they aren't playing the cowboys. :teeth:

I remember being young & stupid - but this is beyond words. The booster involved should be ashamed.

It is just unbelievable to me that Bomar could be so stupid. He could have won the Heisman, he could have played pro ball-the sky was the limit. He gave it all up for $18,000!

I understand he is young, but I'm sure he was well aware of the $10,000 income limit. Also, any kid would understand that if you are getting paid an hourly wage while you are not at work, something is wrong.

It's a sad day for the Sooners, but I think these boys and the booster have no one to blame for their troubles but themselves.

We've had lots of great players leave in the past, and Sooner football goes on. I think Thompson will be awesome at quarterback. Boomer Sooner!

It may be a bad day for Sooner fans and those two young men, but this kind of stuff has been going on for decades. This is actually kiddie stuff compared to what has happened in the past, plus factor in the stuff that never gets reported. Boosters are usually very wealthy men who went to a certain college but weren't quite good enough or not able to play sports at that high level. Then you have those slimy agents giving players cars, cash, houses, women, you name it, they get it! Look at Reggie Bush and the huge, beautifull house his parents lived in rent free for two years. It was owned by a sports agency firm that Reggie didn't end up signing with. Reggie's family was out of the house the day that story hit the news wire. That deal stunk to high heaven and was far worse that what those two young Sooner players did. College sports like football and basketball are ripe for fraud and abuse by agents and boosters. I think they should give these two kids a chance to sign with another school next year, I doubt that will happen though. BTW, I'm not saying what these two did was ok, but I'm just pointing out how small it is compared to other college sports scandals.

I agree that players and boosters have been breaking NCAA rules since the day the NCAA rules were made, but I still admire Bob Stoops for taking immediate action as soon as he had confirmed that the allegations against these players were true. (Not that I think he had much choice in the matter).

I don't agree that this was a minor violation. These two players were being paid for working at a car dealership while they were at football practice. Even if they weren't aware of the NCAA rules (which of course they were) anybody knows that there is something fishy about being paid for work you don't show up to do.

For a few extra bucks, these two players put the entire OU football program at risk for getting sanctions. They may have cost OU a national championship. They certainly jeopardized their own future.

This isn't Bomar's first mistake-he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of alcohol at an Oklahoma City/New Orleans NBA Hornets basketball game. He was also cited by Norman police for having a nuisance party. Unfortunately, I think Rhett Bomar is one of those people who don't think the rules apply to them.

I think both players will get another chance to play at another school, and I don't have a problem with that. I just wish they hadn't done so much damage to the OU program along the way.

First of all, I think Sooner fans should be holding their head high today, not crying. The school did the right thing rather than try and cover things up and hope they don't get caught.

And while I agree the kids should be kicked off the team, it's really hard for me to get too upset with them. Kids are young and stupid and do dumb things sometimes.

The guy who should get the lions share of the blame, scorn, whatever is the booster. His name should be plastered over the papers, and every Sooner fan should think long and hard before every buying a car from him again.

I'm shedding crocodile tears as I type.

Bob Stoops et al HAD to do the right thing. I bet there were thoughts that this story was going to get out either way and that it is better to appear proactive rather than reactive to the NCAA. I still see a big NCAA investigation heading OU's way along with some sanctions.

I totally agree that the school did the right thing. I'm sure there will still be an NCAA investigation, as there should. Sanctions are still a possibility. It's just sad that the actions of a few tarnish the season's future & reputation of the whole team. Bob Stoops did the right thing choosing not to look the other way & hope to not get caught. Maybe other players will learn.

I am aware that this type of thing has happened before, on many teams. Millions are made on college football - it's just not allowed for the players. They chose the game, they have to play by the rules. It's ashamed to see the players who are trying to support young families struggle & in those cases I think some type of stipend above room, board & tuition should be factored into scholarship offers, but Bomar had no excuse. He seemed to see himself as "above" the rules. I'm sad for the effect this will have on the team, but I am not sad for Bomar.

Well, I am actually a transplant from Bama, where they very nearly got the death sentence recently. Maybe I brought bad karma with me or something. And it was alumni in Bama. They should know better. :sad2:

As a CU Buffs fan, I'm shedding crocodile tears also :)

We eternally optimistic Buff fans need all of the help we can get on the football field, well basketball court too!
