I'm eager to see what they will offer

A lot of us old Maxxum owners are eagerly anticipating the new Sony "Alpha". The rumors as to specs are rife, but most rumors suggest that Sony's new offering will be an upscale prosumer/entry-level dslr.

I will patiently keep shooting with my 7D, until they hopefully offer a pro level DSLR, then I can get that body and be back to carrying 2 bodies like I did for years with my 9000s

Already Pre-Ordered the Sony DSC-H5! I'll let everyone know how I like it

at the price of DSC-H5 you can already get a real dSLR (Pentax) and the ISO goes to 1600 (versus only 1000 on the Sony). Also be aware that their "anti blur" technology is just auto ISO change so if the shutter speed is too slow, the IS automatically bumped up so you'll have a faster shutter speed.

Checking the Rumor Mill, it would appear that Sony is several months (quarters?) away from introducing anything that might be considered to be pro level. OTOH, what constitutes a "pro" camera might be somewhat subjective, based on the particular needs of the particular pro. Mrs. YEKCIM is a freelance pro and has used the 7000i's she "inherited" when we got married 14+ years ago, and they have served her quite well and she is still using them. I don't think most pros would consider the 7000i a "pro" camera, but as I say, it does what she needs it to. She wants to move to dslr, along with the rest of the pro world, and is taking a wait and see attitude to see what Sony pulls out of their hat, as we already have a bag full of Maxxum glass. Picture should be a lot clearer next Tuesday!

I had an 8000I and an 800SI, the 7D does every thing they did, I'm quite happy with it, but would hope that a pro model woud be made more rugged

Actually, my Pentax *istDL goes to 3200 iso. I presume it will be the same with the k100 coming out next month (which has anti-shake technology). The street price for the latter with the standard 18-55 lens will be $699. You should be able to find it online for closer to $600 -- a veritable steal for a quality dSLR. :dance3:

Thanks for the correction, Greg K,

there you go, with a great spec like your Pentax dSLR, why people still bother with point and shoot is beyond me. Especially the H5 is a bridge camera (a dSLR-looking P&S) that's nowhere from being compact.

True, up to a certain point, the camera matters, but beyond that, it's about the person behind the camera. :grouphug:

Maybe because it meets our needs!! I own three (3)film SLR cameras and five or six lens. Do I want to cart those around on vacation? NO! Does the P&S meet over 95% of my needs? YES! Am I taking pictures for profit? No! Am I enjoying myself? YES!

Yes, you can get the Pentax for under 700.00. Then it is a couple hundred for this lens. Another couple hundred for that one, etc. If you can afford it, go for it.

Those who want a DSLR should get one because they will enjoy it. I have several P&S and I enjoy them!!!

Life is filled with compromises. So are cameras. We get what we think we need and can afford.

Please wait five minutes. It'll take that long to put my flame suit on.

This is my new baby. Is it perfect? NO, but it meets my needs!

The Pentax including the lens is $500.

The Sony is no smaller than the Pentax. Also priced at $500

So what is the logic?

PS: you DON'T have to buy different lenses, just like you don't have to buy additional lens and lens adapter for your point and shoot.

I'm so glad I started this thread to alert Minolta fans of Sony's release of their first DSLR, so people could hijack it to debate P&S versus SLR

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Sorry about my bad habit :guilty: but I heard that Sony will unveil up to 3 dSLR before the year ends. At least one of them must be a pro-level. After all, all the lenses are already available. (and there are seriously butt kicking lenses from Minolta)

I would hope so, I'm sure Minolta was working on one, and since Sony bought the whole unit, and aquired the development team I'm not sure why other people feel they would be so far away from releasing some great stuff

Sony's upcoming dSLR spec, at least for one of them:

name: Alpha 100
sensor: 10.2 MP CCD
max ISO: 1600
Image Stabilizer: in-body Super Steady Shot
LCD: 2.5" 230,000 pixels
AF: 9-point AF
Storage: CF and MS Pro (with CF adapter)
Price: $1,000 (body only)
