I just got the Touch Edition of the Sony Reader for my birthday today. Does anybody here have a Sony Reader? Where do you usually get your Ebooks from? Do you find it easy to use? At the moment I have one book on there, which was a freebie for registering the Reader. I also got a Waterstones gift card as part of the deal so I will buy a couple of Ebooks tomorrow.

Sorry Corinna, but I can just ask what you think of the reader? We're thinking of getting my Dad one for Christmas y'see :)

Also, from when I've been looking, on-line it seems that Waterstones and WH Smith have the best selection of e-books. I haven't looked into 'free' ones which I believe can be found on-line also.

So far I am loving it. DH bought the reader at Waterstones for me so naturally that is were I first looked for Ebooks (the fact that I have a loyalty card helps as well). I noticed that both WH Smiths and Borders Books also sell Ebooks. I had a look at the free Ebooks, but apart from the Classics, I have not found anything of interest. I did download one of the books for the DIS Book Club for free (Jane Austen, Persuasion).

I think for me this will make a huge difference. I buy a lot of books (on average one a week) and storage space is becoming an issue. When I go on holiday, a significant amount of my luggage allowance gets taken up by books. Well, not anymore. In future I just download them onto the reader and my whole "library" will fit in my handbag.

Thanks for the review :) My Dad loves to read and this is why we think it'll be perfect for him. I've also noticed that his 'type' of books which he reads are readily available on e-books, which would be great for him.

Hope you find the books you enjoy soon :wizard:

I bought one for DH last year and have pretty much taken it over. :guilty:

I mainly buy e-books from Waterstones and love it. I thought I'd miss the whole 'page turning' experience but not really...

My home is over-run with books that just get shipped to the charity shop so it's definitely great for cutting down the clutter. And amazing for travel!!! :thumbsup2

I'm sure you'll love it, Corinna... :goodvibes

I love reading, but im not sure i would get on with a reader, im sure i would miss the whole page turning, bookmarks, smell etc :rotfl2:

Well, I had a bit of a splurge this morning using the gift card that was included and some Waterstones Card points that I had collected. I ended to get two new books that I had been planning to buy, but never quite got around to and two older books that I have been unable to get as normal books in this country so I am happy.

I definitely love it. I am reading The Pillars of the Earth for the DIS Book Club at the moment and I was really tempted to get this for the reader, but it appeared silly as I have less than 200 pages to go. I am pretty sure that at some stage I will get the Ebook though as this is my all time favourite book. I love how it remembers where you got up to and also the dictionary function.

I am not precious about books. I love reading, but I am quite happy to do it in electronic format. I am terrible for not using a bookmark and taking ages to find the page where I left off. In future I won't have that problem anymore. Just a shame that I have 5 books that I have yet to read before I can start on my new Ebooks. I suppose I will read two books at a time: the hard copies at home and the Ebooks when I am out and about.

I'm so pleased you've managed to find some books for your reader Corinna :)

I'm going to order one for my Dad shortly. Then least I know it's arrived well before Christmas day :goodvibes

I pondered getting an eBook reader but I still think they are over-priced and I'm not sure I would get the amount of use out of them to warrant the expense.

I was also worried about damaging the reader - if you drop a paperback (quite often happens when I fall asleep in bed reading LOL), all that happens is you lose your place, if you drop an eBook reader you could lose your book collection!

There seems to be lots of different eBook formats around too - not sure if all the readers can read every format (I guess Sony have their own format as usual lol).

I think I will wait until they are more affordable :)

I use my ipod Touch as a e reader, I download from fictionwise and booksonboard, price is in $ so usually works out cheaper. I was going to buy a dedicated e reader but then discovered books on the app store so ended up sticking with the ipod Touch, as I quite like the size of it and I already had the ipod. Stanza is the initial app to download. It's good because I always carry my ipod so always have a book I can read if I want one.

The Sony reader is a good one though I believe you are limited to where you can get books from. There are other makes on the market I think the Elonex version got a good review.

The other one to seriously consider is the Amazon Kindle, this has the ability to be able to download anywhere as it runs on the 3G network (I suppose as long as there is a signal). It has been much acclaimed. Currently you can order it from the US and it is the US version. Amazon has struggled to get a UK version introduced here because of our different telecom companies, you can still use it here though. It is ordered through the Amazon UK site.

Oh, that really annoys me. I love my iPhone and I thought that it would be perfect if it had the capability to download ebooks onto it. I asked at the local Apple Store if this is possible and was told no and there was no plan to introduce that function. Still I love my Sony Reader and the screen is much bigger than that on the iPhone, but now I have to carry around two pieces of elctronics rather than one.

Not to worry Corinna, you could still use Stanza on your ipod for when you are out and about and don't want to carry your Sony e reader. The Sony e reader is a lovely bit of kit.

With the ipod you can adjust the text size so it is comfortable to read whereas I think the Sony page is like a page in the book, which will make it feel more like a book.

you can use your i phone to download e books its an app called ** ereader**,, there are a couple more on the apps site as well

My Dad's has arrived for Christmas, but we all couldn't help take a sneeky peek before then and it looks fantastic!

We did have a minor problem, as when my brother loaded it up for the 1st time, it ended up in Dutch :lmao: But once we figured out how to change it back to English, we were well away and reading the preview books.

Have to say, it's very impressive :thumbsup2

I think my Dad's going to love it Christmas Day, he's no idea we've bought it for him :goodvibes
