Sony A100

Well the 400D is now on the Canon UK site here but unfortunately no prices. Nice looking camera and a good spec, has "anti-dust" and 10.1mp so it is pretty impressive stuff.
Just one vital bit of info missing - the price! Will be intrigued to see how it compares with the Sony on price. The Sony with 17-80 (or 70) lens is £599.

MSRP is rumored to be $799 body only and $899 for the kit(18-55).

What type of discount will they offer on the current model? I really like the S3 I just bought, but if they discount it enough I might have to exchange it for the Rebel.

Well it is currently selling for $640 at reputable etailers, I can not see it going down too much(maybe 40-50 bucks) b4 they clear out their current inventory.
Even if Canon has not depleted their inventory, but vendors tend to not buy large quatities of a model being replaced.

I found a preview at Imaging Resource that said the list price will be dropped $100 and that the XT would stay on store shelves through the end of the year.

The Rebel XT -- still a formidable camera in its own right -- will stay in the line for the rest of the year, with the price dropping to $799 for the kit and $699 for the body only.

The article said it will drop to $699, which is still well above the price it can be purchased today. This is pretty much exactly word for word what was said about the REBEL(300d) when the XT was released.

I appologize if this has been posted here in the past, I searched but did not find any reviews for this camera.

CNET and other sites give this camera pretty good reviews ... have any of you tried it? Any coments? I'm looking at purchasing a DSLR, the three that I am looking at are:

Nikon D80
Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
Sony Alpha DSLR-A100K

Any thoughts?

the sony received numerous awards, it's a very nice camera,

since Sony bought Minolta, they kept the Minolta lens mount which gives you the option of buying used minolta lenses, as long as they are the auto focus lenses..{ A Mount}
I currently use a Minolta 7D and I am impatiently awaiting the release of a Sony pro level camera.. to add to my collection..

Sony handles Minolta repairs, and I recently had a great experience with their customer service..

i just got one about a month ago... and love it. as the previous poster mentioned, minolta lenses still fit it, which is why i got the sony. from the onset i was looking only sony because of this, but i've been very pleased so far.

Thanks for the reply's ... The one I am looking at comes with the 18-70mm F/3.5-5.6 Lens. Going to Disney and DCL in mid September, probably won't have time (or the extra cash) to purchase another lens. Do you think this lens would be sufficient?

Any DSLR is going to be good. Of the three you listed, I would go with the D80 though. I see it as a step above the A100 and XTi. You do get the in body IS with the Sony though. Unless you have already ruled it out, you might also consider the Pentax K10D.

You may have done this already but I suggest you go handle those cameras for yourself. Don't rely on online reviews. Best Buy should have all three of those models on display and you may find you just really prefer the feel of one camera over another. Some like the XTi because it's lightweight, some prefer the D80 because it's not.

I was choosing between those three cameras in November. I think you would be very happy any of the three for your September trip. If you can only afford the kit lens now maybe check and see if you have friends that are shooting an SLR. If you buy the same brand you trade accessories.

Full disclosure: I picked the D80

The release of the new Sony Alpha 700 is due tomorrow. Theres been a couple of leaks from Sony sites but they're all gone now.

12.2 MP
Improved AF including double cross AF sensor
Improved performance at high ISO.
5 fps continuous.
IR remote in the box.
3" lcd

Gonna wait until all the official specs are out then I might be all over this.
Heres a link

it also has dynamic range optimization which the 100 also had,

I like the fact that they named it the 700, that means they are probably going to use Minoltas naming system..

now if March would just hurry up and get here, the word is that the pro model comes out in march,, I'm guessing that will be the 900 if they are sticking with minoltas naming system...

the 700 is mighty tempting, but I know I won't be happy until I have the pro model..

It's great to see "Minolta" making a strong comeback. I started shooting with a Minolta 7 series SLR way back in the 80s.

I'm amazed in how large and quickly the DSLR market has grown. At the tail end of film SLRs, it looked like they were heading towards virtual extinction at the hand of point & shoots. The early days of the digital revolution exasperated that trend. In just the last 2-3 years, DSLR sales have exploded. At first it looked like they were just reclaiming a lot of hobbyist priced out when they were $2,000+ for the bodies. Over the last year it has become apparent that they have sparked a new boom in photography as a hobby. I'm glad to Sony/Minolta regaining a sustainable share of the market (along with Pentax, Olympus, Nikon, and Canon).

DH bought an Olympus E410 (I think that's what it is) on Black Friday. This week he won a Sony Alpha 100 in a contest at work. (There was a Nikon and a Canon but somebody else won those. :guilty: )

So what do you all know about the Sony camera? Opinions, suggestions, etc? He is excited that this one has the IS built in, which the Olympus does not. He just got the camera on Friday so he hasn't has much time to play with it yet. :)

the Sony A100 is an excellent camera, the in body IS is a great feature, eliminating the need for more expensive IS lenses...another nice thing is,, Sony bought out Minolta and they kept the Minolta A mount for lenses, so any older Minolta auto focus lense will work on the A100, if you know what you are looking for and go about it the right way you can get some good lenses at good prices on ebay

It is going to be a matter of personal preference, they are both nice cameras and come highly recommended:

I don't know about the Sony but I do know about the Olympus.

What users love about their E-410s is the small size (smallest dSLR), exclusively digital design, excellent kit Zuiko lenses, live view LCD, sffordable price and other nice features. What some see as a drawback is the 4:3 system which comes with the smaller size; others see it as a plus, depending on shooting style. Many who like this camera are those who want SLR image quality without carrying around a lot of bulk.

The Olympus E-510 is similar to the E-410 but is a little bigger and has some additional features including Image Stablilization.

Here was a (3 page) discussion I found comparing the two cameras which may be helpful but note they are comparing the A-200, not the 100, to the E-410. I'm not sure how much difference there is between the A-100 and A-200. http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/619288

Hope this helps. Your husband was lucky to win such a great prize! Tell him he'll be missed on the Olympus thread if he jumps ship! :rotfl:

Thanks, Pea-N-Me!
I will have him look at this thread so he can check out those links! He has his own screen name, but he prefers to lurk under mine which is why he rarely posts.:rotfl2:
