Songs you never got the meaning of

I sooooo did not know that Prince's "I Would Die 4 U" was about Jesus. Who knew? :confused3

And I thought "A Horse with no Name" was really about a guy in the desert with a horse as well. Guess I need to pay more attention to songs Ive heard a million times.

I never quite got Ode to Billy Joe. I always wondered what the story was supposed to be. :confused3

Believe it or not, I never really comprehended what "I Touch Myself" was about. I know, I know...how could I not. But I was fairly young and naive, I guess. Now, I wonder how it ever got on the radio!!

Stairway to Heaven is one of the best rock songs ever written, yet I have no idea what in the heck they are talking about ! LOL!

The narrator was Billy Joe's girlfriend, and the song is about her family's nonchalance when talking about the suicide at dinner and implies that they didn't know she and Billy Joe were an item.

LOL. I never knew until a few years ago that the Who's "Pictures of Lily" was about that same topic.

I've heard this song a gazillion times in my life, but I never paid attention to the lyrics or knew that either. Here they are:

I Would Die 4 You

I’m not a woman
I’m not a man
I am something that you’ll never understand

I’ll never beat u
I’ll never lie
And if you’re evil I’ll forgive u by and by

U - I would die 4 u, yeah
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u

I’m not your lover
I’m not your friend
I am something that you’ll never comprehend

No need 2 worry
No need 2 cry
I’m your messiah and you’re the reason why

’cuz u - I would die 4 u, yeah
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u

You’re just a sinner I am told
Be your fire when you’re cold
Make u happy when you’re sad
Make u good when u are bad

I’m not a human
I am a dove
I’m your conscious
I am love
All I really need is 2 know that
U believe

Yeah, I would die 4 u, yeah
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u

Yeah, say one more time

U - I would die 4 u
Darling if u want me 2
U - I would die 4 u
2 3 4 u

I would die 4 u
I would die 4 u
U - I would die 4 u
U - I would die 4 u

Auld Lang Syne <sp>
According to howstuffworks.com:

Auld Lang Syne means ``old long since'' and is adapted from a traditional Scottish folk tune. The basic words date to at least 1711, though some scholars say it was mentioned as early as 1677. Scottish poet Robert Burns is credited with first publishing it, in the mid-1790s, and, researchers say, smoothing out some of the verses and changing the melody.

The song recalls the days gone by and says we will always remember them. ``Should auld acquaintance be forgot?'' it asks. No, the chorus replies: ``For auld lang syne (for times gone by), we'll tak (drink) a cup o' kindness yet.''

All the time! I am not quite good at the nuisances in songs unless they are blatently obvious.

I haven't looked at the link yet but sometimes wonder if meanings aren't added after the fact and in reality, the original songwriter wasn't even thinking what got attached to it.

Then again, I'm just somewhat niave and oblivious to things too. :lmao:

The Beatles "I am the Walrus" :confused3

It's requested all the time on the weekly Beatles radio show, and I like the ending, but I can't understand the lyrics ".....I am the egg man....coooo cooo a chooo."

I never quite understood what In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida meant by Iron Butterfly. The first time I heard it I thought they said "In the Garden of Eden" But since it was written in the last 60's I really don't know what to think!

I always thought this (I stole this from another site):

"In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" is a verbal corruption of "In The Garden Of Eden" or "In The Garden of Life", vida being Spanish for life. It kinda fits...

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, honey,
don't you know that I love you?
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, baby,
don't you know that I'll always be true?

Oh, won't you come with me
and take my hand?

Oh, won't you come with me
and walk this land?

Please take my hand!

-Repeat-

Are we sure it wasn't just WRITTEN by someone on heroin?? :teeth:

John Charles (who used to perform at Disney) does a bit about "A Horse with No Name" that is hysterical. :goodvibes

I love John Charles and used to go to see him every year. Where does he perform now? I remember when he was at the Poly and then the Baton Rouge Lounge.

What was that song Donna Summer did--had the words "Someone left the cake out in the rain...And I don't think that I can take it...Since it took so long to bake it...And I'll never have that recipe again..."
MacArthur Park?
What was that all about? :sunny:

:rotfl2: I agree! I always hated that song.

On another note, I am shocked about the Prince song I Would Die 4 U. I never knew and have probably heard the song 1000 times.
