Songs that are often used inappropriately/misunderstood...

Puff The Magic Dragon is supposedly about smoking pot, although the members of Peter Paul and Mary say its not. Little Jackie Paper? Hmmmmmmmm!!!!!!

Haven't you seen the movie? Jackie Paper is a paper cut out of the little boy and he helps Puff in Honnalee. That was my favorite movie as a kid.

Does anyone remember "Afternoon Delight" by the Starland Vocal Band?

It was a great easy listening tune from the 70's. My parents use to hum along to it every Sunday on there way to church while my sisters giggled in the backseat. Check out these lyrics.

"Rubbin sticks and stone together make the sparks ignite
and the thought of rubbin you is getting so exciting"

As you can tell, my parents never listened to the lyrics! :rotfl2:

Don't be so quick to think your parents did not know the lyrics. We knew lyrics back then. There was no other meaning for "Afternoon Delight".

And he didn't write it, it was written by Bruce Johnston.

I was going to say "I write the Songs" too..
More Manilow trivia

Johnston, has stated that, for him, the "I" in the song is "God"[1] and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in all of us.

Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: "The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip."[2] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of "I Write the Songs" was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976.

It took me until I was an adult to realize Olivia Newton John's "Let's Get Physical" was not about working out.

listening to "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights" when I was younger and then one day it clicking what was really going on .. still love that song. :rotfl:

I've seen it used so many times and I can't help but cringe whenever "Daughters" by John Mayer is chosen for the father/daughter dance at weddings. It is not a happy daddy & me song! The whole thing is about a guy trying to love a girl who has been royally screwed up by her father. My dad would have considered that song selection a slap in the face.

I know I've got more...gonna have to think on it a little bit, but I'm constantly bringing things like this up. lol

YES! This one always makes me cringe when I hear it during a daddy/daughter dance. I actually have a friend who danced to this song with her mom and her sister at her wedding and her dad had run out on them when she was little. It was so awkward knowing their family history!

Not a wedding song, but I have to change the station every time I hear that song Pumped Up Kicks (not sure that is the official title). It is about a kid shooting other kids at school because of their clothing!!! It freaks me out and I can't believe it is even allowed on the radio.

HATE HATE HATE this song. I can't stand when people are smiling and having fun with it. There is a young artist that I love and he uses "pumpedupkicks" as his fb handle. He has also covered it. He's a cute, clean cut self-proclaimed nerd and it's very out of his character. Do you think sometimes artists don't understand what they are singing if they didn't write it?

I think its funny how many songs you listen to at a young age then down the road realize the real meaning behind them.

I can think of a lot of songs I listened to growing up that I never knew what they meant. Finally when I was old enough to realize the meanings I had some good laughs!

One of the best live bands EVER! Skillet is amazing. Got to interview them for a local station when they came here. For those of you who don't know Skillet, here's a little treat:

It always amazed me as a wedding planner when people would want to hear Faith Hill's "Cry". First off, it was written by Angie Aparo (who does a much better version, IMHO)
Here is a version of the both of them live:

I mean really? "If your love could be caged, honey I would hide the key, and conceal it underneath that pile of lies you handed me"

Agreed! At the store I manage, the new cd Rise which came out recently is selling like crazy!
