I gave my kids each a chore to do today. My one 16yo son had to clean out the fridge. Last night I cooked a whole very large turkey for sandwiches for the week. I cut it into pieces and then put it into bags. Son threw half the turkey out in one of these bags, in the outside trashcan. No more then 10minutes later dh realized this. I told him it's in a bag and on top of other stuff he just took out of fridge. I said to take it out of the trashcan, we'lll still use it. He's like eww no. What would you do?

This is the same kid who one other time when he had to clean out fridge, threw away all my condiments and dressings because he figured they were old. I think he just doesn't want this job anymore and is taking the male approach to get out of it.

I'd make my son go to the store, buy a turkey with his money, learn to cook it, cut it up, bag it and put it in the fridge.

Leave it in the garbage and chalk it up to him just being a kid.

::yes::

I would also go over with him how to check food in the fridge to tell what was spoiled and should be tossed as opposed to what is fresh and shoudl be kept.

He's old enough to know better!
Maybe this will teach him to either 1--pay better attention to his job or 2--quit doing stuff like this on purpose just to get out of it....whichever is the case!

As for the turkey in the bag in the can....I'd probably use it if it was well-sealed in the bag.

I wouldn't drag it out of the trash can and eat it, I can tell ya that!

I would leave it in the trash and have your son figure out how he will replace the turkey. Maybe have him learn how to make a turkey and so when Thanksgiving comes around, that can be his contribution. Just be sure to keep an eye on him so that he doesn't add an extra/secret spicies to it.

in the trash especially if it's the outside one! I doubt he did it on purpose, he's 16! His head is not cleaning out the fridge! It's somewhere else, like a video game, or thinking about girls etc LOL. But I'd still keep it in the trash!!! eewwww

No he really didn't do it on purpose, I was kidding about that. He's a fairly responsible kid. His dad is just home from the hospital on pain meds. He remembers son asking him somehting about the turkey, just not what.

I'd go with this one. I mean, I'll eat just about anything but I gotta draw the line somewhere. I figure inside the trash can is just over that line.

::yes:: How did he learn this one so quickly???

If it was in the trash for only 10 mins and sealed in bags I probably would have dug it out...if it wasn't covered in goo that is. Otherwise I think I'd make him cook another one and I'd find him a new job to do.

I say, if it was in a *sealed* ziploc bag and it was only out for 10 minutes, it should be fine. Depends on how much it is too. If it was just a little, I wouldn't go through the trouble of digging it out. If it's a lot, then I would say is salvageable.

I might pick a chip up off of the clean floor and eat it, but no way am I going to eat something that has been in the garbage. Next time he cleans the fridge, have him put everything in a clean box and you get to veto anything he selects before it goes to the dumpster.
