I lost my driver's license a few weeks ago, and after searching the house high and low daily, I have resigned myself to the fact that I need a duplicate license. I have been dreading going to the RMV. Not only is it a 40 minute drive, I just don't feel like going.
So, for the heck of it, I was poking around the website, and discovered I can request a duplicate license, all while I am sitting here on my fat @$#.
I just filled in a short form, paid $20 with my cc, and they will mail me my new license at the address on file.
And, I am even covered in the meantime, if I get pulled over...they e-mailed me a confirmation:
The Requested Duplicate Transaction has been successfully processed on 10/24/2005 at 18:19:49.
Your duplicate will be mailed to you. Your new license will have a state assigned license number if you previously used your Social Security Number as your license number. If you currently have a state assigned number on your license, it will remain the same. You cannot legally operate a vehicle until you receive your duplicate license, unless you print and carry this e-mail with you. The bearer of this e-mail has successfully requested a duplicate Massachusetts license. The license is in good standing and is not currently expired, suspended, or revoked.
Federal privacy laws prohibit the RMV from printing the name, the driver's license number, or the social security number of the licensee in question on this receipt. M.G.L. c 90 sec 11 allows the Registrar to issue a receipt for the fees paid, which may be carried in lieu of your license for up to 60 days. A printed copy of this e-mail shall be deemed a receipt for the fees for the purposes of M.G.L. c 90 sec 11.
Now, I can't wait for it to come. using my YMCA membership card for ID is getting to be embarrassing.
