Last night while watching the 11:00 news, they interviewed a woman at the airport who was all upset at Disney. Because they were going to be taken to a cruise to nowhere, they were just going to go out on the ocean and that no one would tell them what port they would be coming back to so she opted to not go on the cruise. HELLO!! Do you not know that there is a hurricane coming. What upsets me is they must of waited until they found a negative story to report on regarding DCL because they never once mentioned that DCL was refunding 30%- 40% (depending on length of cruise), giving onboard credit and giving a discount for future bookings.

Just like with Charley, they never once mentioned that Tim McGraw (a huge country singer) donated all of his proceeds from his Orlando concert to the Hurricane Charley relief effort. Sometimes the news drives me nuts.

If you watched my show today, the story I wrote had all that information in it.

What show is that, tvguy? Is there a web site for the show? (I don't expect archived shows, just want to learn about the show.)

Well, unless you are within 100 miles of Sacramento, California, you won't see it. I produce the morning news at a TV station there.

You do? Who are you? I'll watch your show... Let me know the channel and time.

Unfortunately, "Drama" (like complaining about DCL) sells in the media more than the nice stuff. People love to see and hear about the bad stuff more than the good. For example, a friend was going to have gastric bypass surgery and a local station wanted to cover the whole process from before the surgery to the end product. She asked my advice (being in the business) and I just informed her that the producers will try to find some "drama" to fit into the piece, somehow (whether looking into her past to see some sort of "cause" for her weight, or interview the kids to see how having an"overweight" mom affects their life, etc. ) Just showing an overweight woman who gets the surgery and loses a lot of weight and lives happily ever after doesn't sell. I just wanted her to know that she should be prepared for any "dirty laundry" to be dug up to add some spice to the piece. The DCL complaint was dirty laundry.

Me too. I remember when Andrew hit in 92. We were in the WPB area and were watching the local news all night long. They were out and about looking for drama. They found people more than willing to create it too. They (news staff) were at a pier and some guys said that someone was swept off of it, and then about 2 minutes they (the guys) were all laughing about it-it was a prank.

All the while that they were looking for drama- people in the Miami area were literally fighting for their lives (just 70 miles south of where we were). Now that really made me mad.

I totally agree with the OP. This hurricane has been so slow in coming that it is comical to watch the 24 hour live coverage. The anchors (who have been on for 12 hours straight) are really reaching for something interesting to say. Last night they actually interviewed the local radio guy and they proceeded to talk about how baggy their eyes were from the long hours and how their hair was holding up. He said to the two female anchors "You look fantastic!" and they said "Oh, you can stay with us!" geezzz

I think disney cruise line will come out of this with praise no matter what some women complains about at the airport. I am sailing in three weeks and that is the price you may have to pay for booking during hurricane season.

You won't see me, just my work, from 5 to 7 am on KOVR 13.
Yes, wall to wall coverage can be a challenge when nothing new is happening. Our station tends to do more special reports, rather than wall to wall. In other words, only go on when there is something to report.
I've included some of the tidbits I've learned here in my stories on Frances. Sadly, unless you are in Florida, or have family there, the biggest concern of folks is how is this going to impact THEIR lives. And for a lot of folks looking in from outside, it's "what does this mean to my Disneyworld Vacation, or my cruise".

One advantage to wall to wall coverage is that the viewer can tune in anytime and see is anything is happening, then tune out.
Out here in California earthquake coverage is our vise. I've done some wall to wall coverage of that in the past 25 years.
The 1989 Loma Prieta quake was interesting because about a quarter of our staff was there covering the world series. Didn't leave a whole lot of us back at the station to put it all on the air.
