I work in a local charity shop, for the British Heart Foundation. Today we had some DVDs, an MP3 player and some expensive trousers shoplifted from our store.

Who on earth steals from a charity? That's the lowest of the low.

I was also disheartened to be approached by people trying to barter with me. Come on! We're cheap enough as it is! We listed a Gucci handbag at £8.99 and this objectionable man had the gall to try and press me down to £5! When I politely said that we don't and can't negotiate on prices, he demanded to see the manager. When she reiterated what I had said, he slammed the handbag down on the desk and stormed out - but not before announcing to everyone in the store that they shouldn't buy anything from us!

It's enough to make you cry.

I volunteer at our church's Thrift shop and it is amazing the people that try to barter. They're usually few and far between. Still, it is annoying. Someone took the time to assess and value the item. Let's go with her on the price.

I'm pretty sure that the world is going to hell in a handbag.

I just saw something on TV where they did an expose on valet parkers at a variety of nightclubs. They put a hidden camera in the car and left a wallet with money in the glove compartment -- 6 out of 11 valets who parked the vehicle went rummaging to see what was in the car and STOLE the money out of the wallet.

Would someone steal from a charity? Sure, why not. It's a sad state of affairs.

People barter at the thrift shops all the time. You have something marked 1.00 and they try to bargain it down to .50. I've seen it a couple of times myself.

A couple of the thrift shops even have several volunteers just to keep an eye on the customers. If anyone shoplifts, they are told to call the police. One of my friends used to volunteer at a nearby thrift shop until she was told to do this. Now she doesn't volunteer there anymore.

It's a sad world we live in.

I would love to have an answer to that! There always seems to be a story of someone stealing toys during christmas time or something of that nature.

Sad, but people steal everywhere, stores, garage sales, parking attendants, hotel rooms, just nasty people.
BUT, there are many more Good people than bad ones, thank Goodness!

Thanks for volunteering, don't let those few bad ones annoy you, pity them instead.....
frustrating and Sad, I agree :grouphug:

The upside: People like Rich work in a charity shop:thumbsup2

That is very sad. My son volunteers with a local church that is a soup kitchen. They open the room prior to eating with charitable donations for needy families. The stories he tells me are very disheartening. People that take and take and take and put it on ebay!:sad2::sad2:

The good outweighs the bad, it has to.

I've had shoes stolen from a garage sale. My DS had a hoodie stolen when he was 9 from the back of his chair at a soccer game. This year DS had shoes stolen from next to him in school. I didn't get mad, I felt if someone needed it so badly that they would steal for it then they should have it. Then I said a prayer for them.

Maybe I'm weird but my heart fills with pity, nothing else.

Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me.

Sad to say that I'm shocked. I'd have thought the number stealing would have been even higher.

You make a good point. Maybe I should find encouragement in the fact that there is an honest group of people out there -- that the number wasn't higher.
