So I am thinking about following the Something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to play with, and something to read guidelines for Christmas this year. I have DD7 and DD12...any suggestions on the "something you need" category. I do not want to do clothes since that will be in the something to wear category...so I am stuck. I keep thinking things like toothbrushes but I would like each gift to be somewhat substantial since they are getting a smaller amount than usual. TIA!:goodvibes

Hmm.. let me think ...

Well, for my kids it could be something like a new piece of hockey equipment or skates. Is there a sport your kids play, or an activity they are involved in that they need something for?
Or maybe something for school? New backpack, or lunch bag .. something like that?

If you want something bigger how about something electronic I don't know how much you spend but something for the computer or a computer you need that for school. you need physical exercise so a bike, roller blades. You need to relax so an i-pod. you can twist anything you want if you try hard enough.

You are welcome to do what you want but I don't like being pigeonholed into a category and trying to come up with stuff to fit the list rather than getting my kids what they want.
I really don't get this? why not set a limit and just get them what they want instead of paying the same amount and they end up with things that match the list rather than what they want or need. :confused3

A watch? Alarm clock, could be I-pod alarm clock? Cool lamp for their room? Desk or desk accessories? Some hair appliance?

I had a friend who did this and her something you need was usually related to school work. Older kids got scientific calculators and the younger ones was school supplies of some sort.

well the reason I thought this would be a good idea was because we are going away to Woodloch this year for Christmas. Luckily my in laws are paying for some of the trip but otherwise this is the kids big gift from us. Santa will probably bring a wii if we can get a good deal...since they are still young I thought this would be a fun way to get them a couple of gifts to open. They will enjoy the categories and guessing how the presents fit!

You could create a story as they open their presents.

Something you want, train
something you need, train tracks
something to wear, conductor hat
something to play with, train set
and something to read, Thomas the train book.

Ok, I know, more for like a 4yr old. But you get the idea.
If you want a train, you'll need train tracks. To be in charge, you need to wear the conductor hat. To play with it, you'll need the surrounding village and accessories, and a good ol book to bring it to life.

For the Wii
Something you want, a Wii and Rockband
something you need, Drums
something to wear, drummer shirt or outfit
something to play with, drum sticks and/or cymbals
and something to read, Game Informer or a novel based on a drummer girl her age.

Something you want, Wii and Fit
something you need, Balance board
something to wear, Workout outfit
something to play with, Wii motion Plus
and something to read, a teen oriented health book (eating healthy, looking healthy), or again a teen novel on based on being beautiful from the inside out.

:thumbsup2 I like your idea, make a theme to your list! Cool:)

I got this list of the DIS boards a few years ago; I added the suprize category because my children are to old to believe in Santa anymore and it is funny to be sneaky :goodvibes

Victorian Xmas List:
DD 11 list:
something you want: ipod touch (refurbed 8 g)
something you need: case for Ipod touch
something to read: Amazon gift cards for kindle books
something to wear: ugg boots
something to share: maybe dj hero 2 or a bluray player for the whole family
something as surprise: Vera Bradley frill bag for school

My recollection is that the rhyme goes: Something you want, something you need, something to play with and something to read. I believe it dates back to the Victorian era. I have followed this practice with my kids for years now and clothes fall under the "something you need" category.

Something they need could be something for their room -- new lamp, bulletin board, ipod dock with alarm clock, new comforter, etc.

Maybe replacing something they've grown out of -- sports equipment, tennis shoes, belts, tights, etc.
