Something you never heard of until you read the DIS

Thankfully, my internet life started after I began customer service at Amazon, and then I started planning my wedding with the help of theknot.com and weddingchannel.com's message boards, so...nothing surprises me anymore.

So many different regions of the country have different traditions! And many traditions came from other countries. So my friend from college, whose family is from the midwest AND whose husband's family is from Mexico, had a happy joyous Money Dance, where people came prepared with bills and safety pins, and she danced for AGES with everyone, including me, and she was just covered in bills. It was traditional on both sides, even though she and her husband met in WA, and everyone was happy to do it.

But for people outside those regions who can't wrap their minds around such things, it seems awful. Everyone was happy to do it for them. :goodvibes

There are also regions that have the ceremony, the dance, and the dinner. One can be invited to 1, 2, or all 3 of them, and it's not a slap in the face to only be invited to one or two! Everyone understands, in those areas, that there are distinctions. It's quite interesting!

Already been mentioned, but "and Oregon".

I watched a Monk episode to make me think about that...bleah.

And I would still LOVE to find out the name of it (the OP refused to give it), because NO ONE on the disneyland forums has mentioned it in the time I've been on the disneyland forums!

But it's NOT comfortable to everyone. So I'm sitting there, my shrimpy self with my seatback all upright, and I've got someone's icky head under my chin. Supa-fun getting up to use the bathroom!

I think it's to create jobs.

:rotfl::lmao::rotfl2:

On a serious note, Peeps drive ME crazy b/c I miss them. But marshmallows aren't vegetarian (that always gets a question, so I'll answer...gelatin isn't vegetarian at all, in fact it's one of the least vegetarian things you can eat, LOL), AND marshmallows are made with corn syrup which is avoided like the plague in our household, plus then there are the colors...Peeps are a painful memory...

Fixed that for ya. :goodvibes I mean, I am a very lazy at home parent, but most AHPs aren't, so I wanted to help out that sentence a bit. :flower3:

Or if you do, just read the words in the links. Don't just click.

It interests me when people are so grossed out by the Diva cup. Do I use it? No. But is it ANY different to me, really, than other things used for the same purpose, perhaps made by the Tampax company? no. It's just that you reuse it and it is less waste in the landfills, less blechy stuff leaking into groundwater (that isn't then sanitized like toilet water is). Plus, there's a mainstream product just like it (though disposable), the Instead cup. Out in stores as long ago as the early 90s! Was recalled for awhile (or am I thinking of The Sponge?), but it's been back out for a few years now. Yay pinkdaisy/swaddlebees company for making what I use now instead of disposable things!

And while family cloth skeeves me somewhat emotionally, we used cloth wipes for DS's bottom while using cloth diapers! (and obviously, from my last paragraph's last sentence, I do wash cloth used for other things) Same thing as the cloth wipes, just...with adults included too. I understand the concept...just maybe don't want to deal with adult, er, stuff. Totally hypocritical and silly of me! :goodvibes

What does amaze or interest me is...how many people don't think about things fully to see where mainstream thought breaks down...how many things that are as natural to me as breathing weird out other people because they don't want to think about it all...how many people listen to American MDs and ignore the whole rest of the world, other ways of taking care of our true, full, health, ignore ways of living for millenia that have worked to get us to about 100 years ago when American MDs mysteriously started being the be-all-end-all...who don't think about things they are putting in their bodies...who believe hype.... That's the sort of thing that amazes me and that hits me most days when I'm on the dis or any parenting board other than mothering.com...

:confused3 isn't that the point of having an expert...... and yes going to school for at least 7 years, and having a respected practice does make someone an expert in my eyes

I know you weren't referring to anything like this at all, but your post reminded me of an incident in an ER this past year.

My DS had a terrible earache that went from, "Mom my ear hurts.", to high fever & vomiting very quickly. While waiting for a doctor, a nurse comes in and proceeds to tell me he would've been fine if the ear drum burst. I said, "Really?". (Not believing he said it.) He said, "Yes, it happens in 3rd world countries all the time, with no problems.". It was "as if" we should model our health care in such a way. My jaw dropped. I said, well it does cause scar tissue doesn't it? And he conceded. I continued that it was conceivable that the scar tissue could effect hearing and I'd rather catch it for that reason among others. I was livid. :sad2:

I googled and am now scared to ever google anything ever again. :scared:

Until I came to the Disboards I realized that I really knew nothing about planning a Disney vacation.

This DISism annoys me beyond anything DIS related.

Before I came to the DIS, I didn't know ANYONE who didn't secure a table first and send someone up to order at a busy CS restaurant. I STILL don't personally know anyone who doesn't do so.

But apparently, this angers people here on the DIS.

I really, really, REALLY don't care though because well... it's their problem they didn't grab a table before getting their food. And off of that,

1. I don't understand why anyone wants children in line, or the entire party for that matter. Kids hardly ever actually stay in line anyway, they just run around and knock people and/or their food over. It's happened to me before and surprisingly enough (and this is 100% sarcastic) the parents claim no financial responsibility for their kids making someone dropping their food on the ground. Luckily, at Disney the CMs have seen this happen to me both times and automatically had the kitchen remake the order :littleangel:

2. If I'm dining in a situation where I'm unable to secure a table beforehand then I eat at a less busy time like 11 or 2.

Sorry, I'm not leaving my kid unattended. I will do my best to keep him still in line, but you know, he's a kid and kids tend to move. If he were to make you drop your tray, though, I would absolutely offer to buy you another dinner.

That one surprised me a lot too. We do the same as you, for the same reasons. Either I'll order and get the food or my DH. It's funny the things you don't know, because I truly didn't know or think it would bother someone else. Not that it matters. It works for us, for a variety of reasons.

Also, like you, if it's super busy we either find another place or eat at another time.

I never knew there were ADRs.
I never knew that a DDP existed.
I never knew that I would end up falling in love with WL.
I never knew that anyone would actually worry about "Gay Days", I still don't understand the worrying.
I never thought people would actually make fun/be mean/decide they MUST have an opinion about those of us who do not know how to pump our own gas.
I never knew that I could dislike someone so much that I've only been on a discussion board with.
I never knew why people stayed at the Poly, now I get it.
I never knew that people who stayed at a Disney resort rented cars to drive to the parks.
I never knew that people didn't get park hoppers.
I never knew the importance of LGMHs.
I never knew the lady on stilts, covered in ivy had the name of DeVine.
I would have never been so anal about the spelling of 'Ohana.
I would have never known to get ADRs at 180 days... then 90 days... then 180 days.

That so many people are only worried about their own comfort and think the heck with everyone else. The sense of entitlement and the "it's all about me" attitudes are sometimes astounding. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular that's here but I think that many know exactly what I mean!

Yep, definitely. And if I'm really hungry and it's noon but it's super busy, I'll grab a snack then so I can eat at 3 or something.

I'm usually the orderer because if it's my mom, she has a hard time standing and really needs to sit down. Or if it's DFiance, he usually gets the same things so it takes him all of about 5 seconds to decide. It's nice that I have time to decide while I'm in line because I'm the indecisive one. It saves a little time that way. :)

Are you a man?

You're better off just googling it yourself. Make sure you do it with your eyes squinted or looking through your fingers. And it would be best to have an empty stomach.

Oh, HELL no. Just based on the term, I was picturing something like a pimp chalice, but pink and maybe with glitter and feathers. Oh, how very wrong I was. :scared1:

Moon Cup?! Moon cup? I'm scared to look. I've seen too much already. Can someone give me the PG version of what this is?

It's the same thing as the Diva Cup, just a different brand -- I hope this version is PG enough -- Posters that had one thought it was more supple than the Diva.

That's funny. I'm the indecisive one and order taker most likely too.

I don't want our kids fidgeting about the line. They are hungry and tired and it's not a good situation around all the people transporting food and drink.

I don't know. People have reasons for what they do. Sometimes maybe they are looking out for other people and the others just don't see it. Life is funny like that. Half empty or half full type of thing.

I didn't know that children were invited to weddings.

I never knew children WERE NOT invited to weddings LOL

I
I also never knew that sit-down meals were so common at wedding receptions in some parts of the country. Or that people give a shower gift AND wedding gift. I just thought the people who brought gifts to weddings missed or weren't invited to the shower.

.

I never knew that people only served cake and mints at a wedding and not a sit down meal!
I also didn't know that people who were invited to TWO seperate things, a shower and a wedding, only brought one gift.

I also never heard of people taking shoes off to go into someones house.

I have never kept my shoes on in my house or anyone else's. I didn't know people did.

I never knew you were supposed to go to everyone's funeral that you knew? ;)

I never would have guessed that someone could be so insulted and offended about just the possibility that I might bring a small gift to a child's birthday party...

I also assumed it was good manners to bring a hostess gift of some sort if invited to dinner or a cocktail party. :confused3

Also, people really do love those Vera Bradley bags. I'm sure they're comfortable and hold lots of stuff, but am I alone in thinking they look like diaper bags? :confused3 . To each his own I guess.

I agree completely! I think they're so ugly, and don't understand why anyone would want one.

I didn't know about Disney Dooney & Bourke handbags until I read about it on the Dis!

AND I didn't know that you could order park merchandise on the phone ;)

Love my Disney D&B and I'm trying to be "good" and wait until my next trip to get another one :rolleyes1
