We're planning on driving I-95 south from PA and will probably stop somewhere between Richmond VA and the NC/SC border. Are there any interesting attractions very near to I-95 in this area? I'd be content to lounge by the pool but wifey feels compelled to cram as much stuff into every vacation day as possible. Suggestions?

Well,

There is Paramount's King's Dominion theme park right off I-95 right before you get to Richmond. King's Dominion also has a water park.

Bill,

You've picked a strange stretch. I'd have to agree, Kings Dominion would be the pick for family fun. When you get to the stretch between Richmond and NC border, there's just not any "attractions" unless you are race fans. We have Richmond International Raceway, but since I'm not a fan I can't tell you the schedule (waiting for flaming to begin!). You are also going through the middle of NC another not so happening place.
A native NC diser would have to help on that one. I can see why you would want to lounge by the pool, it's a tough drive to FL. Good luck and happy trails to you and your family!

What kinds of stuff do you like to do?

There is lots of history, particularly battefields to look at.

Kings Dominion is north of Richmond and South of the Border is on the NC/SC border.

Thanks for the suggestions. It is a strange stretch, chosen only because this is probably where I'm going to need to stop on the first day. King's Dominion sounds good, exit 98 or thereabouts if I recall from our Myrtle Beach trips, and we actually stayed at South of the Border about 5 years ago. The historical stuff will appeal to my wife, she enjoyed Williamsburg last year and we've toured the Gettysburg Battlefield a few times. We have a year pass to Williamsburg with time on it but it's too far off I-95 for our purposes. Don't think I could interest her in a race track although I'd like to go before I die.

Well there is nothing to do at the raceway unless they are actually having a race.

I can't beleive I forgot some of this stuff

Right off 95 in Richmond, is the Governor's mansion and Capitol building and then there is St. John's Episcopal Church where Patrick Henry gave his "give me liberty or give me death" speech.

Hollywood Cemetary also is interesting. Presidents' James Monroe and John Tyler are buried there. As well as Jefferson Davis.

No trip to Richmond would be complete without a drive down Monument Avenue http://xroads.virginia.edu/~UG97/monument/begin.html
