Something Old, Something New, Nothing Borrowed, Something Blue

Did they not have locks like the Panama Canal?

No. There is very little variation in the water level between the Med and the Red Sea so no locks are required.

I"m glad that you staked out your claim for a spot and were able to hold it for the day.

This worked out really well.

Funny that no one else was up and beginning of the crossing.

I found that very strange.

So the place you had dinner was an upcharge sort of place?

Yes, this was classified as one of their speciality restaurants. The Anthem of the Seas, which is the only US based Quantum class ship has Johnny Rocket's in its place.

I'm going to have to get my head around the RC pricing if we ever want to try one.

There is a huge choice of complimentary food options. We just fancied trying the noodle bar. The main difference in pricing is that soda is not included in the cruise price. For that the cruise price tends to be quite a bit lower.

Thinking of your German side now Corinna. Do you watch the great british bake off? I was wondering if you had tried a dampfnudel and if so is it as nice as it looks?

Do you watch the great british bake off?

I rarely watch TV. I am predominantly late shifts at the moment and I am rarely home before 23:00.

I was wondering if you had tried a dampfnudel and if so is it as nice as it looks?

Yes, I have had them. They are delicious with vanillas sauce. Unfortunately I can no longer eat them as I have been yeast intolerant since 2011.

Dampfnudeln are wonderful things! Also, their Austrian cousins, the Germknödel.

Corinna, I just got caught up reading the last three days and I am in awe at how wonderful Petra is! It seems like you had such a great time on that ship, too. Sorry that you felt embarrassed by your countrymen! However, I am of the strong believe that each country has its share of idiots...

...

Good to know thanks! I visited Austria mountains once oh my word it was breathtaking. What a beautiful country. I ate my own body weight in Milka chocolate. It was before I could not eat chocolate. I am glad now I got fair share lol!

Also visited Germany in Munich I enjoyed that also. Charming city. But I went to a strange restaurant that the men were not allowed to serve themselves and if they did the woman next to them had to kiss them to the claps of the cheers of rest of the restaurant that was stopped by a gong.. It was Bavarian I think. Of course guess who had a massive bearded guy next to her that served himself lol. When the gong went I wondered what was happening.. Oh my were my last words before kissing a complete stranger and this Thor lifted me up! What a strange custom...

Welcome back. Petra is amazing.

It seems like you had such a great time on that ship, too.

Yes, we did. I am ever so slightly nervous about returning to a different ship.

However, I am of the strong believe that each country has its share of idiots...

I am with you on this. I know that nice people and idiots come in all shapes, colours, sizes and nationalities.

Day 20 - We have a saying in American about how when we travel to Europe that we are always the "Ugly Americans". So much so that I have even pretended to be from Canada. I'm sorry that you had to see folks from both of your countries behaving badly. I guess there are always some bad apples in every bunch.

From the time that you first started through the slot canyons, I kept thinking, "boy this looks like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". I'm assuming that the Treasury is the location where that was filmed. It was definitely breathtaking. I can't believe how much you must have walked that day.

That whole accident scene sounds crazy and scary. I had to Google "lorry" as I had no idea what that meant. I guess we would use the term "big rig" in America.

I guess there are always some bad apples in every bunch.

I could not agree more.

I'm assuming that the Treasury is the location where that was filmed.

The movie was filmed all over Petra, as was The Mummy Returns apparently.

It was definitely breathtaking.

It is.

I can't believe how much you must have walked that day.

It actually was not too bad. I walk more when I do Disney.

That whole accident scene sounds crazy and scary.

It was. I could not believe it when our driver went over the central reservation.

I had to Google "lorry" as I had no idea what that meant.

I am sorry about this.

Day 22

I had not set an alarm again, but this time we were awake a bit earlier. We woke up just before 9:30, got ready and headed to the Windjammer for some breakfast. We ended sitting in our usual place again. Graham had some fruit and a cooked breakfast. I went with plain pancakes with whipped cream and chocolate fudge sauce followed by vegetable fried rice and sausage. We were both brave enough to have some coffee.

After breakfast, we headed to the solarium. This time round, loungers were in short supply. It was not that they were all occupied by people, but they all had stuff on them. I did find one near the pool and settled in with my book. The advantage of this location was that it was close to the bar and I could get Coke with my soda package there, too.

Graham had gone up to deck 15 at some stage. The captain made an announcement that the ship would slow down and a boat would come alongside so that we could take on board some stores. I was very amused by this. I think most people on board knew what the "stores" were. Royal Caribbean does at least two Suez Canal cruises every year and they always bring on extra security for the passage through the Gulf of Aden. I don’t understand why they were so secretive about this. Surely this is something positive that they are so security conscious. Anyway, from where Graham was, he could see the whole process. He did say that some people and some boxes did come on board.

After a while, I got too hot where I was and decided to take another lap around the solarium to see if there was anywhere further back to sit. Graham had come back down and found a lounger towards the back of the solarium. There was a lounger next to him with nobody on it, but just a towel. I asked Graham how long he had been there and he told me about half an hour. I asked him if he had seen somebody around this lounger and he had not. So I waited another 5 minutes and then I removed the towel and settled down. Of course shortly afterwards the person turned up and grunted something. She had the good grace to go elsewhere. It is clearly stated in the Daily Compass that reserving loungers is not permitted and that after 30 minutes stuff will get removed. This was not enforced as much as I would have liked, but apart from this morning, it was not really an issue.

We spent another hour or so just relaxing and then went to get something to eat. It turned out that this was the last time we spent any length of time in the solarium, as with the rising temperatures, it was just too hot. We decided to head over to the Windjammer. I had the build your own pasta again with fussili, Bolognese sauce, sausage, oregano, sweet corn, mushrooms and Parmesan cheese. Graham had some salad and then went with some roast beef from the carver with mashed potato and vegetables. After lunch, we relocated to Two70. We managed to find seats by the windows again and made ourselves comfortable. We had a lovely relaxed afternoon.

Once they started setting up for the show, we left. I arranged where and when I would meet up with Graham again and then we went our separate ways. I did a quick round of the photo opportunities and then went back to the cabin to get showered and changed. I had a couple of things to take care of that evening. There was another professional photo opportunity with DreamWorks characters and I wanted to make good use of this. This evening we had Shrek, Fiona and Puss in Boots, which made me very happy. Then it was time for me to head for the show.

The show that night was Spectra’s Cabaret, which takes place in Two70. This was even stranger than The Dream, but the combination of the robo screens, dancers, acrobats, singers and special effects had a certain wow factor. I am pretty sure that I would not go and see it again, but I am glad to have seen it once, just for the experience.

When I came out, Graham was already waiting for me. We did the rounds of the photo opportunities and then headed for dinner. We were at the American Icon Grill again that evening. We both passed on the appetizer and soup courses that evening, but I enjoyed the cornbread. We then both had the Surf and Turf. Graham passed on dessert, but I had the mini ice cream sandwiches, which were very nice.

Once we had finished dinner, we went back to the cabin. Our stateroom host had left us another towel animal. Graham put the TV on for a bit and I read for while and then we got ready for bed.

That drill sounds odd. I can't believe people are so oblivious to what is going on around them. I don't know how comfortable I would feel being off the coast of Somalia.

Lunch sounded nice. I didn't know that Jaime Oliver had restaurants on Cruise ships. I guess if Guy Fieri can do it so can he!

What a lovely day at the spa. I need just a plain old massage, my body does not want to cooperate with me.

How odd that Graham didn't show up for dinner, or let you know he wasn't coming. Maybe that's not odd for Graham.

Fun day at sea!

Nice mix for day 22. Breakfast sounds great with fudge sauce pancakes. I can't get my head around rice for breakfast I am far too English... Anyone drinking coffee on a cruise ship in the main buffets is brave in my view! Thank goodness for the specialist coffee bars...

That is naughty about folks putting towels onto loungers then dissapearing. I wish crew would police this more also.

Ohhh how interesting about the ship slowing down I bet Graham had the telescope homed in from deck 15! I would have been reassured by knowing the truth also. What is the big secret. We are all exposed to the news.

I love the photos of today. How cute the NY background. Lovely dress. Great characters! Where was Fiona?

Fabulous one of Graham with Shrek. What a marvellous waistcoat such a lovely colour and I like the pocket watch. Looks great with his bracelet.

Excellent one of the two of you with the Hollywood sign too.

I love the Shrek one of you also. Pretty dress and cute coloured toe nails just showing with Puss in boots.

That show sounded 'interesting' lol.

Dinner looks good. Love the ice cream sandwiches. Too cute. I don't like odd numbers, they need to make that four...

I like "Close to Bar" advantages.

Graham had gone up to deck 15 at some stage. The captain made an announcement that the ship would slow down and a boat would come alongside so that we could take on board some stores. I was very amused by this. I think most people on board knew what the "stores" were. I have asked before why they don't just tell the truth in some of the different cases, and they said that since people are on vacation/holiday that they do not want to be burdened with the real world. and that it keeps other passengers from getting too anxious.
I can see both sides I guess.

After a while, I got too hot where I was and decided to take another lap around the solarium to see if there was anywhere further back to sit. Graham had come back down and found a lounger towards the back of the solarium. There was a lounger next to him with nobody on it, but just a towel. on CC people are always up in arms over the loungers inside and out, it is a real problem, that people feel they need to reserve them. I really wish there was a better way.
Almost like a parking meter some time limit might help?

We spent another hour or so just relaxing and then went to get something to eat. It turned out that this was the last time we spent any length of time in the solarium, as with the rising temperatures, it was just too hot. We decided to head over to the Windjammer. that is great to hear. Glad you both had a good time just relaxing and enjoying the day.

this my take on a lot of the shows, we used to go to everyone and now we hardly go at all. I guess I just needed a break.

Dinner sounds lovely and the ice cream looked really good.

I don't like odd numbers, they need to make that four...
I guess I am the opposite... From a spatial view or a photo view, the three are perfect and I would not change it. It is all about the 1/3rds. lol :)

Love the floral dress and that pic of you and Graham in front of the Hollywood sign is adorable!

Of the top of my head, I remember a saxophone, clarinet, violin, cello, a couple of trombones and a couple of trumpets.

Ah, Ok. I would call that a small ensemble. To me you need at least 20 or so to make an orchestra. But that could also be one of those words that translates slightly different. Thank you for clarifying.

I could not believe it when our driver went over the central reservation.

This is another one of those words. I think we call it a median in the US.

I went with plain pancakes with whipped cream and chocolate fudge sauce followed by vegetable fried rice and sausage.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with fried rice for breakfast! It is and always has been one of my favorites for my entire life. As a kid we used to eat cold Chinese food leftovers for breakfast. I remember when we got our first microwave and my mom told me that I wouldn't have to eat my Chinese food cold anymore and part of me was actually sad.

I had the build your own pasta again with fussili, Bolognese sauce, sausage, oregano, sweet corn, mushrooms and Parmesan cheese.

I would have been very happy with the make your own pasta bar!

The show looked a tad bit odd to me, however I loved that dress that you were wearing in the pictures that night.

That drill sounds odd.

The idea behind this made perfect sense, but the execution was a little strange.

I don't know how comfortable I would feel being off the coast of Somalia.

We were at a respectable distance and the area is heavily patrolled by coalition forces. I think this is probably one of the safer spots nowadays.

I didn't know that Jaime Oliver had restaurants on Cruise ships.

This was new to me, too when I started planning this cruise.

I need just a plain old massage, my body does not want to cooperate with me.

I could do with another one by now. I may just treat myself to one after the 5K.

How odd that Graham didn't show up for dinner, or let you know he wasn't coming.

I think he must have fallen asleep somewhere. This is not the first time this happened, but on the Magic and the Wonder there were only ever two or three places where he may be, but on the Ovation there were a lot more possibilities.

Maybe that's not odd for Graham.

It is not odd for Graham to miss dinner. He finds the multi-course dinners every night hard work after a while. He normally does let me know though if he is not coming for dinner. That is why I think he fell asleep somewhere.

I can't get my head around rice for breakfast I am far too English

As I normally don't eat breakfast, I am always happy if there are some more unusual choices.

Anyone drinking coffee on a cruise ship in the main buffets is brave in my view!

With cream and sugar, it was actually drinkable.

That is naughty about folks putting towels onto loungers then dissapearing.

I really don't understand why people are doing this.

I bet Graham had the telescope homed in from deck 15!

He had indeed.

I would have been reassured by knowing the truth also. What is the big secret. We are all exposed to the news.

That is my take on the matter and seemingly many people on the ship felt the same.

Where was Fiona?

I only noticed when I posted this update that the photos were missing. I do have some photos with Shrek and Fiona from a different day though.

Looks great with his bracelet.

That bracelet is there for medical reasons. In 2003, Graham had a motorbike accident, which meant that his left wrist had to be reconstructed from hip bone. Even with this, the prognosis was not wonderful. He has limited movement in the wrist and was told that in 5 years with a possibility of up to 10 years in an absolute best case scenario, he would need further surgery. They were talking total wrist fusion. As soon as everything had healed, I got him a magnetic bracelet to wear. This is what this is. Fortunately for him, there has not been an change at all. However, if he takes off the bracelet for any length of time, he gets more stiffness and pain in the wrist.

That show sounded 'interesting' lol.

Interesting is a nice way of putting it.

I don't like odd numbers, they need to make that four...

I don't mind it if it is just me eating whatever it is. What I am not too keen on is if something is billed for sharing and then you get three of everything.

I like "Close to Bar" advantages.

I like this, too.

I have asked before why they don't just tell the truth in some of the different cases, and they said that since people are on vacation/holiday that they do not want to be burdened with the real world. and that it keeps other passengers from getting too anxious.

That makes sense.

I can see both sides I guess.

I can, too.

I really wish there was a better way.

Me, too.

this my take on a lot of the shows, we used to go to everyone and now we hardly go at all. I guess I just needed a break.

I have never been big on the shows, but I am really looking forward to the ice shows on our next two cruises.

Love the floral dress and that pic of you and Graham in front of the Hollywood sign is adorable!

Thanks.

Ah, Ok. I would call that a small ensemble.

I would normally do, too.

But that could also be one of those words that translates slightly different.

Royal Caribbean referred to it as an orchestra.

This is another one of those words. I think we call it a median in the US.

It always amuses me that supposedly we speak the same language, but there is so much different vocabulary.

As a kid we used to eat cold Chinese food leftovers for breakfast. I remember when we got our first microwave and my mom told me that I wouldn't have to eat my Chinese food cold anymore and part of me was actually sad.

I have to admit I have never tried cold Chinese food.

I would have been very happy with the make your own pasta bar!

I really loved this. I am hoping that they have this on our next cruise, too.

The show looked a tad bit odd to me

Odd is a good description.

however I loved that dress that you were wearing in the pictures that night.

Thanks.

Day 23

This morning we had an earlier start and were up and about by 9:00. I was a little torn that morning. As it was a Sunday, there was a nondenominational service in Music Hall at 9:30 and originally it was my plan to attend this. However, I then spotted that there was a visual quiz about airlines in the Schooner Bar at 10:00. I do not only work in this industry, but this has been a big passion of mine ever since I was a child. I could not do both and in the end the quiz won out. We will be on the Navigator for two Sundays and both will be sea days so I am hoping I will get the chance then.

We got up and ready and headed down to the Cafe Promenade for a light breakfast. We had plans for a sit down lunch that day so did not want a proper breakfast. Graham had a lemon and poppy seed muffin and I had a vanilla donut. We both had some coffee. Once we finished our breakfast, we headed on deck up to the Schooner Bar. There were quite a few people there already and more people came drifting in while we were sitting there waiting for the quiz to start. There was somebody conspicuous by his or her absence though and that was the person running the quiz. 10:00 came and went and nobody turned up. After about 10 minutes people were drifting away. Somebody headed down to guest services and they contacted somebody in cruise director’s staff department. The person, who had gone down, came back stating that they would send somebody. Somebody did turn up about 10 minutes later. This must have been the quickest ever quiz as a lot of people there needed to be at the progressive trivia at 10:30. It was fun though. Each team was given a sheet with logos of various international airlines and a pencil. The idea was to complete them all and hand the sheet in first. I had expected tail designs, but it was logos that can be found on the main body of the aircraft so that threw me a little. Graham commented that he was surprised that our logo was not on there until I pointed it out to him. Tail designs would definitely have been easier. We did OK, but did not win.

Once the quiz was over, we decided to head over to the Two70. It was a lovely clear morning and we managed to get some seats near the window again. I started to read, but then got captivated by the trivia which was going on. Two of our tablemates had been playing all cruise and they had mentioned this every now and again at dinner sharing some of the more out the world questions for our entertainment. That morning I realised how much fun this was. This was not just a typical quiz, but had all kinds of different types of questions. There was a logo round, a round where you had to put things in order, a round where a song was played backwards, a round where you had to guess a celebrity by the voice, a lyrics round, a film soundtrack round, a TV soundtrack round and a variation on Family Fortunes. I wished that I had come across this at the beginning of the cruise and this is high on my to do list on the next two cruises.

This day we had another time change so when the progressive trivia was over, the cruise director announced that the time was now noon. I find this very strange to do the time changes in the middle of the day rather than over night as this is the case in DCL. I find this a lot less disruptive. We were just about to head for lunch as this normally starts at 12:00, but with the time change they put this back by an hour. Fortunately I did spot this on the Royal IQ app before we set off so we had another hour to relax. This worked out for another reason. I was facing the window and was blissfully oblivious about what was going on behind me. Suddenly Graham tapped me on the shoulder and told me that there were some penguins behind me. At first I did not understand what he wanted from me, but he pointed in the general direction of the stage and there were the penguins from Madagascar. They did a little dance and then their escort invited people to come and see them. To my delight, they had a photographer with them. So I got in line to meet them. This was another thing that I wished I had found out earlier in the cruise. Apparently there was a photographer with all of the character performances.

Shortly after the penguins had left, so did we. We headed down to American Icon Grill. We were seated and our server for this meal came to take our drinks order and bring the menu. I had some Coke and Graham had some water. We both passed on a starter. I had a look at the salad bar that they had set up further back in the restaurant, but the line for this was long so I passed. Graham had the fish and chips, which he said was just OK. I had the Nasi Goreng, which came with a fried egg and some Chicken Satay. This was absolutely delicious. I also could not resist the dessert. When I looked at the menus before the cruise, there were lots of different desserts with peanut butter. However, they had changed the menus and they had all disappeared. This was the one exception and they had a chocolate and peanut butter pie. This was amazing. This was hands down the best dessert I had all cruise.

After lunch, we headed back to Two70. Shortly after we go back to our favourite spot, the lecture started. This was about photo editing on smart phones and tablets. This was done by the same guy who had done the Vatican lecture. Graham did not go to that so he had no idea what delight was waiting for him. One of the Chinese crew members introduced the lecturer. She introduced him as Professor Warren. However, she had quite a strong accent and what Graham understood was something quite different. Graham looked at me quite bewildered and asked me if she had just called him “professional boredom”. I just cracked up. This was such a fitting description of that guy. Graham came to that conclusion as well. I really hope that they won’t have the same lecturer on our next two cruises. I normally enjoy the lectures on our longer cruises and especially on the Transpacific it would be great to have some interesting lectures to go to.

Around 15:30, we left. We had the North Star booked for 16:00 that afternoon. We headed up to the check in for the North Star. This was an altogether different experience than what it had been on the first afternoon. When we checked in, we were each weighed and were then given a card with a number on. It turned out that they were checking in two “flights” at the same time. We were on the first one. The previous group of people had only just gone up so the person checking us in offered that we could get some water and advised that it was OK to bring water onto the North Star with us. We were all OK. Once the previous group had landed, we were allowed to go up. There was a photographer taking photos in the North Star before we went up. As we were the first people on board, we just got a photo of the two of us. This time round we went up and then over the side of the ship on either side. That was a very different experience and it felt we were up there for quite a while. I took some more photos from this unique perspective. Once we landed, the photographer offered to take some photos outside. We stopped for a photo and then headed downstairs.

We took a lap around deck 15. Graham decided to take a second lap and this time he ran it. It was very hot outside so I headed back inside to wait for Graham. He had actually gone to take some photos and then entered the elevator lobby from the other side. I suddenly saw him go downstairs in the lift on the opposite site. So I headed back to the cabin figuring that he would turn up soon enough. That he did. A couple of decks down from the Windjammer there is a glass floor giving some fantastic view down all the way to the Royal Esplanade. That is what he had looked at. I was a little disappointed that I missed this and he offered to go back with me. We did. Unfortunately this was very hard to take a photo of due to the reflection of the glass. I tried to take some photos at the glass flowers that were strung up at the far end of the bank of elevators. Again I had limited success because of the reflection.

There was a gold Vespa on the landing on that deck and I took a photo of this before we headed back down. Graham wanted to have a closer look at the outside deck on deck 5. So we headed in that direction. We had a look on one side first and then headed over to the other side. There we found some nice loungers with a view. We settled down and stayed out there to watch the sunset. It was still pretty warm, but because it is pretty sheltered on deck 5, it was actually pretty nice. The sunset was pretty lovely, too.

Once the sun had gone down, we headed back to the cabin to get showered and changed. We enjoyed a glass of wine while we got ready. Once we were done, we headed down to get some photos. Then we headed to dinner. Only my "dad" and his partner were there that evening. Our other two table mates had dinner at one of the specialty restaurants this night and the following one. This was our last meal at Chic. Graham had the shrimp ceviche followed by the grilled Atlantic salmon with crushed red bliss potatoes with a white wine butter sauce. I had the tomato bruschetta again followed by the Beef Wellington with roast potatoes, broccoli, asparagus and a Bordelaise sauce. Graham passed on dessert and I was going to pass, too, but then I heard that they had pistachio ice cream, which I have a weakness for. So I had some of this.

After dinner, we said goodnight and headed back to the cabin. Graham got ready for bed. I read a couple of chapters in my book and then I called it a night as well.

Once again, you managed to accomplish quite a bit in one day! That shade of blue is lovely on you!

I am glad the 'grand quiz master' eventually showed for the aurline quiz. The trivia in the afternoon sounds fun.

How great Graham noticed the penguins. At first I thought what! Penguins in that region lol.. This is not the south pole..

Nice photos. Lunch looks good. What a nice relaxing afternoon. Interesting flight experience!

You both look great at dinner. Very odd a time change in the middle of the day.
