Something I am wondering about the 2010 Olympic opening ceremonies

I am just wondering during the 2010 Olympic opening ceremonies if the Vancouver orginizers try to show a lot of things that have to do with natives from Inuktitut or various Canadian reservations, is that really showing the rest of the world what Canada is really like? Obviously things like that have historical facts, however is that what we want the rest of the world to think of Canada? You can also say they already started something like that because the logo named Ilanaaq, which means means friend in the Inuktitut language. The reason I bring this up because we all know about the Canadian jokes like people living in Igloos, so I guess with the Olympics being in Vancouver it can put an end to all the Canadian stereotypes.

I would imagine that when the world sees that the venues aren't igloos, they will realize that the Olympic logos aren't completely representative of modern day Canada.

I know that they have taken a real cross section of artists and entertainers from our area of the North including the Philipino rapper.

I know that the Cree music group Asani will be part of the Olympics (both the torch relay leg in Ottawa and the actual Olympics themselves) because of their unique version of O'Canada which combines English, French and Cree lyrics with background sounds of drums and animal sounds (bears etc.).

The group gave a performance at our school this fall and I have to admit that I was surprised at how good their version of O'Canada was ... it seemed to really blend a lot of what it means to be Canadian.

I can understand the idea that the Olympics is a great opportunity for us as a nation to shed the "we live in igloos and it snows all year" image. If the Vancouver organizers consciously chose entertainers etc. that represent the multitude of influences that weave Canads's cultural tapestry, then I think the idea of what it means to be Canadian will shine through. :)

Well, like the rest of you, I'll be watching the Olympics from my sofa at home :happytv:, and I live here! Vancouver, that is. I think you need a letter from God to get into the opening ceremonies, or anything for that matter. Supposedly they are going to have some areas in town set up with big screen TV's broadcasting some events. Along with other things, kiosks, tents, etc. Will try to get into downtown by train, cause we won't be able to drive in.
I do know the Olympic committee upset the Cowachian knitters on Vancouver Island. They felt their signiture sweaters were copied, and were upset that they weren't asked to knit them.
Should be interesting times here.

 I didn't get that letter from God or get the privilege to win the "lottery" to get any event tickets. So I'll be watching the Olympics in Maui. :) No point sticking around given all the projected road closures and traffic issues. I hope there'll be more than all the First Nations representation. We are a multicultural society after all. The world should see a blend of all cultures because that's really what B.C. is all about.

I'm just glad I no longer live on the North Shore! The traffic was bad enough when there was an accident on the bridge, I'm sure it will be a nightmare during the Olympics.

I should be far enough away that it won't affect me.
