Yeah! I will head over in just a bit.

oh...not bored...actually took today and tomorrow OFF so i could get some things accomplished  ....but, off to read.... (can't resist!)

Umm, we are still waiting for the story!;)

Tracie - Barb is right. You are a excellent mother. Do not blame yourself. But also don’t just let them put your child on medication. In many, many cases ADD/ADHD can be completely corrected with a change in eating behaviors. Her nutrition is very important. Even my daughter that teaches will tell you that. One very important thing is to control the sugar in her diet.

We have a friend that has a son Mikey’s age. These are very close friends of the family. The boys used to do a lot of things together but Cory started having terrible behavior problems. It got to the point that Mikey wouldn’t have anything to do with him. In 6th grade they kicked him out of the regular school setting and he had to finish the school year in our alternative school. He wouldn’t do is school work either. He could have answered yes to all of those questions. Heck, I could answer yes to those questions for all of my kids. (I could even say it about me). Cory was of course diagnosed with ADHD. They put him on Ritalin. He was fine when taking it most of the time. His mother did not like him being on it so she researched it more and found out that he had nutritional issues. Once these were addressed he was a different kid. Sugar was the absolute worst thing for him. I know it is hard to take sugar away from a kid but if it is regulated that is a whole lot better than Ritalin that is basically just going to medicate her to the point she doesn’t feel like doing anything.

Here are the side effects:

Nervousness and insomnia are the most common adverse reactions but are usually controlled by reducing dosage and omitting the drug in the afternoon or evening. Other reactions include hypersensitivity (including skin rash, urticaria, fever, arthralgia, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme with histopathological findings of necrotizing vasculitis, and thrombocytopenic purpura); anorexia; nausea; dizziness; palpitations; headache; dyskinesia; drowsiness; blood pressure and pulse changes, both up and down; tachycardia; angina; cardiac arrhythmia; abdominal pain; weight loss during prolonged therapy. There have been rare reports of Tourette's syndrome. Toxic psychosis has been reported. Although a definite causal relationship has not been established, the following have been reported in patients taking this drug: instances of abnormal liver function, ranging from transaminase elevation to hepatic coma; isolated cases of cerebral arteritis and/or occlusion; leukopenia and/or anemia; transient depressed mood; aggressive behavior; a few instances of scalp hair loss. Very rare reports of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) have been received, and, in most of these, patients were concurrently receiving therapies associated with NMS. In a single report, a ten-year-old boy who had been taking methylphenidate for approximately 18 months experienced an NMS-like event within 45 minutes of ingesting his first dose of venlafaxine. It is uncertain whether this case represented a drug-drug interaction, a response to either drug alone, or some other cause.

I'm sorry but I have seen to many kids put on that medication simply because the schools did not want to deal with the kids. Things may be different where you are but please try everything you can before you put her on medication.

I am by no means a perfect mother but I would never put one of my kids on that stuff.

I hope I didn't offend anyone. I just love you all and feel like you are family. Your kids are all very special to me. I would say the same things to anyone in my family.

Sorry, I will jump off my soapbox now.

Wow! I'm speechless.....

:lmao: Well...sure she put it up into a pony....WHY WOULDN'T she??? :confused3 :lmao: But, tell her she is a wonderful person to donate like she did...I admire her.

(I'm selfish and will keep all my hair...thank you very much! :snooty: )

She now wants to let it grow back out and do it again. She was very happy to learn that she was able to do it.

Okay now I have a figure so that you can tell me how to tip. She charged $15 for a shampoo, cut and style. It took her about 20 minutes total. How much should I have tipped?

Also, Mikey's stylist charges $10 for a boys cut. She doesn't shampoo it, just uses the clippers. How much tip for that?

Umm, we are still waiting for the story!;)

I know, I know :headache: but..it's kinda long and I really need to get some stuff done before the rain comes.... I think DH has hockey tonite, so i'll try to post it while he's gone..... (i didn't promise, said i'd try....)

Marcie - some sympathy for you and the boy's grades. Our school system has "Edline" network. This allows the teachers to post the grades and parents/students to check them.

We do have this here, but we use webgrader. Sounds like they all do the same thing. Of course they'd work much better if we ever checked them regularly. Was just checking DS14's and saw an F on an assignment in Social Studies. Of course it was from last semester (mid Jan) and of course that's the only class he didn't get an A in. Asked him to talk to the teacher (he swore he'd turned it in) and the teacher said it was too late, he'd thrown everything from that assignment out, he did have some without names, etc., but couldn't do anything now. This is about the third time with this kid, but the others were during the semester so we got them fixed. Told him we'd be checking once a week at least for the next semester.

Problem with oldest DS isn't that he's getting bad grades overall, but just in one class. And the argument is that he's taking AP Calculus as a sophomore (2 juniors and all the rest seniors) so that I should just be proud of that. Well, if he's getting C's, I'm not. I don't care if he's younger than these kids - he took precalc last year and Algebra 2 the previous year, etc., etc., just like they all did. He only skipped pre-algebra and I think he should have made that up by now since it was 6th grade!

But the issue is that this class ONLY has grades for tests. No homework (well, of course there is some, but it's not graded or even checked), no class participation, no extra credit - tests only. And he insists he's not "good" at tests. This from a kid who got a 34 in math on the ACT as a freshman. Yeah, he is. He's just trying for excuses. He doesn't "not" understand it - he just doesn't study, rushes on the tests, and makes a lot of stupid mistakes. Sigh!

Morning homies ,
Just wanted to let you guys know that I won't be posting hear for awhile.

Lawrence, I agree with the others. If you only got points or warnings, just stay in here - no one will attack you here and I don't think the "point police" hang out here much! ;)

so the meeting at the middle school went well. kbean continues to improve in all classes and they made some interesting observations that she may need to be assessed for ADD/ADHD.

Again, I have to agree with the posters who said it truly may not be that she's ADD/ADHD, just bored. We went through this on and off with oldest DS all the way through elementary school. When he had teachers who kept the room lively, with lots of activity, and always something different to be doing or go on to if he finished an activity, he excelled. The couple teachers he had who did the "everyone sit quietly in their seats while I teach to the bottom half of the class in a monotone" didn't work so well.

In second grade, his teacher insisted we get him tested, and also told us he wouldn't make it through third grade. Well, we did get him tested, and found out that very definitely he met the criteria for "H" (hyperactivity - I do realize this is much more common for boys), but he had none of the symptoms of ADD. He was the kind of kid who could be reading a book under the desk, talking to a friend, watching another class on the playground at recess and still be able to tell you every word the teacher said. He wasn't unable to pay attention - more like he didn't need to!

If your daughter is that bright, I really think the same things could be happening. This is the son who in 6th grade, we then put in Algebra (8th/9th grade math). Just giving him one class (in his strength) that truly challenged him made an incredible difference in all of them. He was okay being bored in social studies because he could always be working on his math homework when he finished it. It was okay that he didn't really have any homework other than math because he sure had enough of that.

So I guess I'm recommending to see if there's somewhere they could be challenging her more. I'd also recommend against the Ritalin, even if it's suggested. When they did agree that Matt was hyperactive, but not ADD, I'd asked if Ritalin would help. The doctor was very strongly against it. When I said that the teacher had recommended it (does an elementary school teacher have that authority? :confused3 ), the doctor said that of course many teachers would like their whole classes to be put on it just to make their lives easier! Anyways - good luck, you're obviously a great mommy since you care this much and are doing all you can - and keep us posted!

She told me that Zack was "so blond....blonder than any girl" that this teacher knows!

Um, okay, I'm confused by this quote! Didn't know hair color was gender specific!

DM and Bev are correct...see their site: http://www.swamedia.com/help/boardingschool/index.html

:cool1: Welcome to the "Mean Mom" club :rotfl2: Hope your daughter 'gets it' now that she lost her phone for a month....just don't forget to give it back! (Once, we grounded Ryan from internet games for 2 weeks.....after a month, we totally forgot we did that....till he had to come to the salon with me... :lmao: [he will use my laptop and play internet games while I am working])

As far as 'saving clothes' for the 'girlfriend smell'.....buy him a bottle of her perfume...problem solved ;)

Thanks so much for the link! I'll try to send it to mom, but they still have AOL and dinosaurs powering their computer, so she may not be able to see it, but I'll summarize it for her!

I think DS bought her the perfume she has, so maybe I'll just tell him to buy an extra bottle next time!

Yeah, and we do the same thing about punishments. It's all gung ho for a bit, then we forget. For example, even though last night was only the second night of DS having to spend that hour studying, first of all it ended up being more like a half hour (and then he ran out of things to study) and secondly, near the end I saw him with his cell phone, which also wasn't supposed to happen. It's always easy to make proclamations, but much harder to remember or stick with them!

Lori....I don't know about 'sharing' the Mean Mom Award, but since Mary is also a 'mm', I've started a club. So, our member count is 3.....so far :rolleyes1

Well, come on now, I'm the one who started whining about how DS15 believes we're torturing him! I have to be a charter member of this club - in his eyes at least!! (Luckily, at this exact time, my other two aren't requiring a mean mom!)

Well yesterday my baby got her hair all cut off. She has never wanted it cut but recently she decided she wanted it shoulder length. She was excited because it was long enough and she was able to donate it to Locks of Love. It really is cute and now she can actually brush it herself!!!!!! So what does she do with it this morning? She put it up in a stinkin ponytail!

Pics?! I want to see the cute haircut on the cute kid! (Wish I still had some of those!)

Well it isn't right for the teacher to just be taking test grades. Some kids really do not do well on test, even if Matt does. His brain sure sounds like it is somewhere else and he just doesn't want to take the time to study.

Thank you for helping make my point. Another teacher that just wanted a kid medicated to the point she didn't have to do anything with him.

True!

I will try to take pics this evening. Can't believe we didn't take any with it down before we cut it off.

Hey guys! I'm here. Actually, I've been here for awhile. I'm in a pisser of a mood, so I don't want it to spill over onto anyone else.

Lawrence, don't let a slap on the wrist spoil your good time here. If you got points, you aren't the first and you won't be the last. It's like getting a speeding ticket. Drive enough and eventually you'll get one. Post enough and eventually you'll probably get points. Feel free to come post here whenever you want.

Tracie, oh the joys of parenthood. The bonus in this package is that we don't get to find out if we've screwed our kids up for another 30 years or so. Isn't that fun? They want to test Joshua for the gifted class. Everyone has weighed in on that one (my mom and oldest sister think I am horrible for even considering it... they just dump more homework on them you know... ) and I am taking everything into consideration. However, I am the one that lives with him... I am the one that knows him best... I will make the best decision I possibly can. Will I get it right every time? No way in hell. BUT, I will always try to do what is best for HIM using all the knowledge and love and pure gut instinct I can. Listen to what everyone has to say, take it into consideration, look at your kid, and do what is best for you. You are a great parent. A bad parent wouldn't care what kind of school experience their child was having.

I know that I had other things to say, but they are leaking out of my head now.

I feel like someone has attached a steel band across my head and lead weights are sitting on my shoulders. Perhaps I am tense? Ya think? Maybe a wee bit o' stress in my life? Pfffft.

Oh, here's a fun fact for the day. Did you know that marks made with Dry Erase markers will not wash out of denim, no matter what you treat the stain with? :headache:

i just got home from school.
they closed the high school at 10:21 today.
they opened as usual at 7 this morning.

it has taken me 15 minutes to drive 1 mile home.

first time in 17 years the school has closed down due to weather.

12 to 17 " now in the predictions.

i have to go back and ketchup on all i missed this morning here.

Hi all-
Well... my kids ended up having a snow day today:rolleyes:
Got 2 phone calls this morning. One at 6:10 am from one of the room moms and another phone call at 6:50 am from the other room mom- that school was closed today. Dh and I thought it was a joke at first, b/c it wasn't real bad out earlier this morning. We thought hte kids could survive school today.
But the school dist felt otherwise. So we have been lazy here this morning.
I did wake up with a massive headache this morning. Was hoping the kids go to school so I can have peace and quiet today. I guess the teachers get their peace and quiet today
DH went to work this morning.

:grouphug:  to all that need it:grouphug:

Ok, confession time from me. I have sinned. I have this crush on Matthew's band teacher :lovestruc I blush when I see his band teacher. SO not good.
He is cute lookin, tho. He is probably around my age. And I love music as well! I got to snap out of this. DH doesn't know.
I did share with his band teacher yest how well Matthew did with the clarinet at the Variety show last Sat. He was thrilled to hear the news! :thumbsup2

Ok, that's it from me.

I hope to bbl, if the kids let me on the only computer we have  :lmao:

Hi to all :wave2:

Got to get lunch going soon for the kids.

:lmao: of COURSE she does!!!

I sure thought I responded to this earlier. Oh well, guess I am loosing what little mind I have left.:rotfl:

So I did good then. I never leave less than $5 for either of those cuts.

The girl that did Ally's hair graduated with Miranda and has been doing hers for a while now. She said she has been doing it for 6 years. :scared1: I forgot how long ago they graduated. But Madie is 4 so I guess that would have to be right.

The one that does Mikey's is here in town and he goes home afterwards and takes a shower.

Be back later, gotta go take Ally to lunch.
