Even though I haven't been posting much lately, I still think about all my US/IOA peeps!!

I'll try to get back on the boards more often...

See ya...

We are having our annual Holiday Work Party tonight.
There will be around 20 of us. It's usually a good time getting to know spouses, partners etc. Open bar! :woohoo:

I hope the snow holds off until after the party, but it's looking pretty gray and nasty right now at 2:00.

Hope you get to go to your party....be careful....don't make us come search for you like they were for Lori!

Anyway, I undeservedly received a gift from an ELF today!

I had read some rumblings about an ornament exchange, but didn't think much of it as we would be away for the most part and didn't think I'd have time to participate within the deadlines. So, thank you! I totally did not deserve that, but I'll play by the rules and post when everyone else does. My ELF knows me well...

Barb, I have been meaning to ask you ... how long do we have to wait till we find out which friend died in the tornado on DH? That was a great episode! In the beginning it said "One will lose a husband; all of them will lose a friend." Pretty sure the "husband" is Victor. Who is the friend? Carlos?

Uh-oh...the "other" no-no to talk about at work...religion :scared: I myself have 'issues' with this...so, we'll leave it at that....

Glad you got your 'elf' box Jodie...;) :rolleyes1

And, yes, Victor is the husband that dies....remember Ida...McClutskey's friend with the cat that came over to ride the storm out? Her....she's toast. My guess is she woke up and realized cat was missing and went lookin'.... then, WHAM! ....toast I tell ya... :rolleyes1

Here's a spoiler link another DISer posted: http://community.livejournal.com/ohnotheydidnt/18231854.html?#cutid1

You guys need to help me think of something else to get my Grandpop....i already got him food...what else do you get a 92 yr. old man who doesn't need money or clothes and will quite possibly have his drivers license revoked soon?? Any ideas??? Start throwin' 'em at me

Hey girl...glad to see ya! How's your friend enjoying her new look and clothes?

sounds like my family cause they write down everyones name on piece of paper put it in the hat and you draw out a name for like you, wife ,son 1,and son 2 and thats how many you have to buy and I always try to get everyone we get something really nice and I usually get calone or some cheap after shave :confused3 and I say it everytime if you think I stink at least get me something that smells good not like a old dirty sock:lmao: :lmao:

Ah, yes. Nothing says "Merry Christmas" like the stink of cheap cologne. We love you, but you smell. :lmao:

My family does a stupid gift exchange thing too. It's a yankee swap. Everybody buys a gift that is $10 or less, can be a gag gift or real. We all pick a number. #1 opens his/her gift. #2 opens his/her gift. #2 can swap with #1 if he wants. #'s 3 and on can swap with any of the above and on and on till the last person. Than the 1st person can swap with anyone. In my family the youngest are teens, and they actually get into this. So, I guess its a nice way to spend time with the teens who usually ignore us old folks at family gatherings!

The ornament exchange party I go to every year is a yankee swap. However, the rules are, #1 is screwed... they just pick and open a package. Everyone else can swap what they unwrap. An ornament can only have three owners. So, it can be unwrapped and swapped twice, then it is "dead". That seems to work well. It's fun, but what we are swapping are just ornaments. It's not like a family gift exchange. I would think that feelings could get hurt with real gifts. My family still exchanges gifts with each other. We tried the name drawing thing, but then I'd have Susan's name and find the perfect gift for Carol. It just didn't work for us.

Oh gosh, it's totally a sheet of ice, and Mike just started making his way to work. :scared1:

Tricia, my brother is one of those angry liberals. Over Thanksgiving he hung up on me because he couldn't take a little ribbing. Picture my brother, raised Catholic by conservative parents. Quits his job as a financial analyst for an investment banking firm in the city to go backpacking through Asia for 9 weeks (much of it by himself). Comes home only to decide he hates the east coast (he graduated from Boston College). Flies out to CA without a job, finds one, and lives in San Francisco. Marries a girl who is liberal and is best friends with her very flamboyantly gay brother (who I too adore .. but everything revolves around his politics). I think my brother and SIL are voting solely based upon how a candidate feels about gay marriage. Anyway, several years ago, I listened to an angry diatribe from my brother about "why would people want to have kids? It's selfish. You can adopt a child who already exists and is in need. There are plenty in Africa, Asia, South America. I just think it's ridiculous that people would want their own kids just for the sake of vanity." Fast forward to my brother and SIL announcing that they are going to start trying to have kids themselves..... He hung up on me when I said that was good, I was glad he'd changed his mind, and I would be happy to pay for its college education if the child attended a Catholic school.

I'm not even Catholic anymore. He just doesn't get me. Hey, I couldn't stand Bill Clinton and Hillary's voice is like nails on a chalkboard to me. But, I don't HATE them. I don't HATE people who like them. I don't get angry over it, and I can understand their point of view. But, just mention the letter "W" to half my family and you can expect an angry remark or the silent treatment. I don't understand that. They preach diversity, but only if you agree with them. ;)

My friend likes to say that she is trying to "educate people" about the unjust things in this world. Mmmm-hmmm. "Educate" meaning "teach to think as I think". She at least laughs when I say that, but really... for the most part... it's true.

Here's my stand on politics and I'll only take Penny's soapbox for a minute. The political party structure in our country stinks. The Democratic PARTY and the Republican PARTY have complete control over the PARTY platform and, therefore, what each candidate that the PARTY endorses stands for/votes for. There is virtually NO room for individual thought, individual stances. Look at what happens to an independant sounding candidate. I can name dozens of examples, but we really don't need specifics. Somebody shows up on the scene full of fire and pomp, ready to "make some changes" and the people take notice. The PARTY (which ever one the candidate claims to be a part of) says, we support this somebody and the somebody gets elected. Now, when it comes time to implement changes or vote on issues, the PARTY steps in and tells the somebody that they supported what and how they can do things. If not, they will be ostracized and completely unable to function with out the power of the PARTY behind them.

In other words, the people with all the real power in our country are not the elected officials, but the people who run the PARTY that backs them. We do not vote for or have any control over the people that run the PARTY. While public opinion might factor into their decisions, the decisions are still theirs to make. That, my friends, gives me the heebie geebies.

I don't get the people who back any political party 100% without looking at the individual candidates. I have come to the conclusion that they could put an elephant and a donkey... and I'm talking about the four-legged animals... on a ticket and a certain percentage of folks would vote for them just because they were the party that they support. :confused3

Hi all-

Nashville Trio- Glad to hear from you!

Jodie- Welcome back!

Janet- Welcome back!

Marcie- GLad you got a hold of Lori and that she and family are doing ok :thumbsup2
Hope Lori can get back here soon.

I just want to say I mailed out my Ornament Exchange buddy on Tues, so I'm guessing it will take a few days to get to my designated person.
I didn't get my ornament yet, but I'm guessing it will come in a few days, also. I'm not worried about it yet. Mail is so slow now anyways.

Hi to all!

I've been busy. My 23 yr old female cousin was in town for 2 days. She just left back on the Amtrak train this afternoon. so we visited with her, etc. She is married, but her DH couldn't make it here b/c he is working a new job with tons of hours. It was very nice to visit with her tho, as I haven't seen her in about 4 yrs.

I saw my dad last nite, and he doesn't look good at all  He lost alot of weight, from the leukemia. He starts chemo right after Christmas.
I felt so bad for him :sad1:

Oh, good news! I got my airfare vouchers yest from UPS-from the contest I won!! :cool1:

I got a ton of school stuff going on with hte kids, just too much!! :scared:

Gotta run.

The yankee swap is after we have exchanged the real gifts. It's just a fun thing. Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

I say dump her....get a new friend!

Meh, we've been friends for 20 something years. I was a bridesmaid at her wedding (before she "discovered" she was a lesbian). She was a bridesmaid at my first wedding. We've got a lot of history, just not a lot of common ground now. The feelings I have for her stem from the history. I just roll my eyes at the now. KWIM?

Since we're in politics, I'll extend it to religion. This brother is the same one who (being Catholic) spent 9 years dating a Jewish girl. Both sets of parents (as you can imagine) were extremely unhappy. They were determined it would last. One of the first signs it might not was during a conversation about children. GF said something along the lines of "If we have children, of course they'll go to a Jewish school. Brother looked at her and asked, totally seriously "But won't they feel out of place?" She asked why and he replied "You know, being the only Catholic kids there?!" :confused3 ;) Don't think they were together too much longer after that!

OOoops! :lmao:

Do I detect a potential PUI for later? popcorn::

My brother would never dream of doing anything like that. He would, but he'd remove all the Republicans first ... because we're all evil and selfish and greedy and imperialistic. :lmao:

Goes without saying, doesn't it? :confused3 :lmao: :lmao:

Doing Brad Under Influence :rolleyes1

i'll sleep better tonight knowing that acronym.
tanks homie

 :rotfl2: well....given you have Marcie's first AND last name..... :rolleyes1

*ahem.... me

:rolleyes1

:rotfl:

thanks for the heads up.
i'll send her a pm to let her know.....

I almost forgot about you posting this, but I'll be the first to say I think it is a GOOD idea! As many of us as are able could agree to a date/time and head to a chat room to discuss. That way, those who didn't want to participate in the ornabuddy thing (and, as Seinfeld would say, not that there's anything wrong with that) wouldn't have to scroll thru 5 to 10 pages of us oooohing and aaaaahing over our ornaments.

We could still post a brief what-we-got and why-we-bought-what-we-bought on the thread if others are interested.

Madame Raven, who started this whole exchange, what do you think?

i would like us to post what we received and who sent the ornament to you on the thread.

and

that would be kewl to have a room to talk about the ornaments then.
we can oh and ah then on how we figured out what to send our secret santa person.

if for some reason one of the ladies would not be able to be in the chat room at the designated time period, they would be left out on the talk and not be aware who had whom type of thing.
lets do both ways.

we should all have ours by the 20th.
when we did get them, we can post on the thread or show a picture of the ornabuddy.
then after posting, we can do the chat room to giggle about it.

we need to do both!

we need a volunteer to coordinate a time that is good for everyone.
if no one volunteers, i can step up to the plate.

I just wanted to say a quick "HI" and "Merry Christmas" to everyone!!

Gift certificates for a car service? Does he like games? My dad used to love the handheld versions of solitare and such. He wouldn't touch a computer, but the little games didn't fall into that catagory with him. Books? Does he read? Does he have a craft or hobby? :confused3

Hi all-

Sorry about your dad. I know from very firsthand experience that he'll look worse before he's done with the chemo. Be prepared for that and be strong. :grouphug:

Great news about the airfare vouchers! Planning a trip yet?

The yankee swap is after we have exchanged the real gifts. It's just a fun thing. Sorry, I didn't make that clear.

Okay, that makes sense. I was just thinking about Jodie's situation where she bought a present last year and got bubkes.

Hey guys, what are we yakking about?

My family does this stupid gift exchange on Christmas (extended family, aunts, cousins, etc). Everyone buys a gift, gets a number and chooses in order. Anyone can take anyone else's gift. We've all done it, but here's the stupid part: you can't open the gift. You're taking someone else's unopened gift. We all open the gifts at the end. Last year I got stuck with a certificate that said "Congratulations. A donation has been made in your name to the Human Fund." Yes, funny, but I was a little annoyed that I had spent time and effort getting my gift and all I got was a Seinfeld reference, followed by some scratch-off lottery tickets that didn't win anything. My mom got a gift that she couldn't use but just about anyone else could. My brother got gift certificates to Dunkin Donuts, but he has no DD in the part of CA that he lives, but I go to Dunkin Donuts every night when I'm working midnights, etc. Stupid. I lobbied to have us open the gifts this year. My aunt and others vetoed that. So, I rethought my thoughtful present (which was a nice radio/clock/alarm/nature sounds/MP3 player). Instead, I designed a bag. On the front it says "I  Mitt Romney '08." On the back it says "Merry Fricking Christmas, Butt Face." Then I put our family names with December 2007 on the bottom. I'll fill the bag with Christmas M&Ms and stupid lottery tickets.

I will instruct my mom and sister (who lobbied with me to open the presents this year) that they do NOT want my gift so it takes them out of the joke as they deserve. I have some ANGRY liberals in my family. I am not sure when becoming a liberal meant that you had to completely lose your sense of humor, but they have, and if I arrange correctly as I hope to do, one of said ANGRY liberals will get my thoughtfully inspired gift and get the hint that we should open the damn presents this year.

you should include losing lottery tickets in that bag.
that is way kewl what you are doing this year.
throw in a melting popsicle to make it better.:rolleyes1

Yes, but don't forget that I'm one of the few chosen ones who know Mac's REAL name so she'd better be careful! ;)

I'll be glad to when I get mine! Really, I'll stop by and explain, but I don't know if my person has gotten mine yet or not so not sure how much I could say!

Yeah, and the DIS is loading so slowly for me that I'm actually doing work between loads!

you make a valid point bestest homie friend in the world inside boxes...

Hi to all!

Gotta run.

from where yours is coming from rose, you should have it by monday.
weather plays havoc on the mail.

speaking of mail.............
i come home and see some dude with ws plates on his car sitting in front of my house.

then i see my mail box and poststand in the field...far away from where it was anchored in concrete.

post master dude said he had to take pictures of the damage and asked if i had home owners insurance .......

a sub carrier slide into my wooden post, snapped it off ground level and banged the mailbox to kingdom come .......the field

i told him i am not using my insurance to repair/replace something that was done by one of his employees.

he said he is new at this and it might be sometime next week before he can figure out what to do............

meanwhile, guess i have to go to the post office each day at 5 to get my mail

we all have missed you.
i know how life can keep a person busy, we all go thru that.

your ears must have been burning.

Yes, I did laugh my **** off, as they were all totally appropriate to me! Thank you! No used lottery tickets though? Think the evil postman stole them?

Second, no way in the world should you submit that damage to your homeowner's insurance, unless the PO doesn't step up and then they have to act on your behalf to get the PO to pay up. Unbelievable!

i'm getting a kick out of what you homies are talking about with the family exchange.

it's very entertaining for me and i'm smiling like an idiot again.

we don't do exchanges with the families.
never started it in the beginning so never had to deal with it.

well, i did receive a few gifts from mil many years ago but after i sent them back to her, she took me off her shopping list.

i always send her a thomas kincaide christmas sculpture with flowers.
do the same for my mom each year also.

in august, my mom had me go to the garage to take the older kincaids i have had delivered to her at christmas time over the past years.
she said in case she dies she wants me to have them back so our nasty sil couldn't put them in a yard sale.

she never pitched the flowers off of the kincaids.
they were all dried up and yucky.

8 years of stinky dried up flowers.................

Well...Pop lives in Philly, so he can take the old people bus.... I should mention, he doesn't see real well (well, we are trying to figure out why a month ago, he couldn't read the big "E" on the eye chart, but now he can :confused3 ..he's having an ultrasound on his coronary artery to see if there is a circulation problem to his eyes...hence losing the license....) He doesn't have any crafts or hobbies...he used to be very active with soccer and a carpenter by trade....my Grandmother was the social butterfly...Pop was just along for the ride.... He doesn't want his computer anymore....and probably wouldn't know what to do with a handheld game! Basically, all he does is sit around and watch TV all day...that's it. He's really a tough cookie to buy for....that's why we'd buy him gift certs for restaurants...but, he needs a physical and eye exam to renew his license...don't think he'll pass. Worse comes to worse, we'll get gift cards for Acme.... but thanks for at least thinking about it.....

Barb, get your FIL scratch off lottery tickets! We get my grandma some every year. Poor grandma had to get evaluated the other week because she's losing it. They asked her what holiday we just celebrated. Instead of Thanksgiving, she said Memorial Day.

Or, you could always do a charitable donation if he has a favorite charity? We also get grandma gift certificates to Shop Rite or Walmart. She seems to like those as well.

Yes, my new sig. Well, I don't think Mitt's chances are that great so I have a feeling I'll have to change my allegiance after primaries are over. I tend to vote with my wallet (as in which politician is going to keep his hands out of it), and I like Mitt's tax credits and incentives the best. For now, anyway. :goodvibes
