my work computer....I came in today and it was missing. We checked with the IT guys and with my boss's boss (just in case there was a valid reason) but someone had actually unplugged the cords from the tower and walked off with it.

where do you work? Are there security cameras?

There are no security cameras....things have been stolen before....but a computer?!?!?!?

We have had more than 20 laptops stolen-- twice! I don't think they ever found the guy and we have security cameras.

This is why all of our laptops are in bolted-down docking stations that are PW locked. You can't get them out unless you know the pw. The desktops are anchored with steel cables. They also are all set up so that they won't power up without a PW. Stealing one would be pretty useless unless you planned to use it for parts.

Our building is used for a lot of fund-raisers and such; we have security but there are just too many strangers in here after hours.

If I had to place bets, I'd bet one of the tech support guys that they're getting rid of (moving the whole department to our Phoenix location but not keeping everyone) did it.

I just came back from vacation to find that someone had gone through the papers in my cubicle. Someone had also switched out my office chair for an old one and someone had stolen my computer mouse and replaced it with one that didn't work.

Lintasare, I was wondering what other weird things had happened to people at work.

We used to work in a kind of run-down building and my co-workers would always tease me for lugging my work laptop to and from work every day...until one morning we came in and EVERYONE'S laptop had been stolen. Including the ones that were in locked offices or locked to a desk with cables. I became very popular as the only person with access to a lot of our old information!

Now we are in a high security new building....I still lock mine up every weekend though.

We regularly have stuff stolen from our building, including computer equipment. We all know it's the cleaning lady but TPTB refuse to do anything about it. We are all wondering what it's going to take before they do something.

Yes, well, there ain't a heck of a lot you can do against thieves who are determined enough to use hacksaws and bolt cutters. Usually that sort of thing isn't an inside job, though, unless the insider comes back after hours with a truck backed up to the dock.

The guy that stole ours the last time was let into the building by another employee. He was coming in around 6pm as people were leaving. He was dressed like and looked like an employee coming back in to check on something. We don't have badges and with more than 200 people in the building you never know who belongs and who doesn't. They caught the guy on security cameras going from floor to floor. He even took computers that were locked desks (but people left their keys in the drawers :sad2: )

We now have a useless security guard here until 8pm.

Before we had the security guard, someone pulled up the building, ran in between 5 and 5:30 and stole the computer off the receptionist desk! They dashed in, cut the wires and were gone!

Oh my! These stories are crazy!

My current office stays locked when I'm not here and there is a locked door at the beginning of the hall that is always locked. I just couldn't imagine coming in and finding my computer gone!!!

Even at my last job, it was a country club, so we would leave the front office unlocked for servers to get cash...Man! What kind of neighborhoods do yall work?!:goodvibes

Lint- I can't believe they moved your stuff around!!! How many people are in that office....can you find who has your chair? Oh! I would be so mad at that...I think more mad than a thief taking the computer!

in my office small things go missing all the time. silly stuff like a scissor or staple remover. but it's such a small office it makes us crazy.
if you have an IT department you would think that everything on your computer is backed up on the server. i know in my small office, if a new computer is brought in we just have to log it into the system to retrieve files from the old computer.

They think they found it.......the Tech Support guys found a computer hidden in the back area of our office. It was the same make and model as mine....however, the hard drive and memory card were removed and serial numbers aren't kept track of so it will never be identified.

The plot thickens. Definitely an inside job.

This reminds me...I used to be a network adminsitrator for our dept back in the 90's. One morning after a long weekend, I was getting all kinds of calls about users' computer not working properly, turned out someone stole the memory (RAM) out of all the workstations in our group.

Well, the person I suspected other than Tech Support can't have done it....she wouldn't have been smart enough to recognize those two things.
