As far as calling picking up something someone abandoned by accident or not goes stealing, I dont agree, and I doubt that I am alone in my opinion. I have lost things myself, and will always check with lost and found or security to see if the item I lost was returned, but dont expect to get lucky. In fact, some of the other posters here seem to be drawing lines in the sand as far as what they would return or not.

I can only comment on the law in New Jersey, but we have a crime here called Theft of Property Lost or Mislaid... and it carries the same fines and/or imprisonment as walking into a store and stealing it off the shelf. So in NJ you are obligated to return the lost property to the owner if they are known to you or turn it into the police if you don't know the owner.

I'm always amazed that society needs some laws that should be common sense, but after reading the above post I am reminded why...

Last July I kept my 7YO cousin for part of the summer. She is in another state and this was her trip away from home. I usually go to WDW once a year in the winter. After spending a couple of weeks with us, my 17YO DS and I thought it would be great to take my cousin. Before she left home, her mother bought her a new pair of pink sparkly flip flops.

We stay at FW cabins. This was our first time there. The fifth day of the trip, I was exhausted with all of the excitement of having a small child with me, showing her everything, and the heat. My DS decided to spend the evening at the movies at DTD. I decided to take my cousin to the beach area and let her play in the sand and catch the fireworks and EWP since we had not done that yet. She figured this was the perfect time to wear her new shoes.

There were only a few people on the beach at the time. I vaguely remembered her kicking off her shoes as we entered the area and ran off to play with other children. We had a wonderful relaxing evening. My son called on the cell phone to say he was heading back on the next boat, so we hung out after everyone left and waited for him.

When he got off the boat, we headed for the bus stop and we realized my cousin did not have her shoes. My son told her she should have put them under the chair we were sharing. She said, "I didn't know. I've never been to a beach before."

The three of us spent almost an hour looking all over the beach and under chairs in the dark. My little cousin was very upset. This was the first time in three weeks there was ever any sign of a tear. I said, "Oh, we're not going to cry over a pair of flip flops. They will probably be at lost and found tomorrow." The poor thing had to walk to the bus stop and ride the bus barefoot.

Well, you guessed it - no one turned in the shoes. I mean these were a $5-7 pair of shoes. Who would take something like that? Yes, we did get her another pair, but these were special to her.

I'm sorry for your child's loss and everyone else who's had a something lost while at Disney. :(

I think this subject has been throughly covered and is turning into a debate so I'm locking this thread.

Y'all have a nice holiday weekend!
