After much planning and waiting on this holiday happening. My DH had an accident at work about 6 weeks ago involving a loading bay door at his work falling on his back. We are now at the stage that he can jsut about walk 15 and then breaking out in sweats and severe pain. He ended up in hospitla last week with a suspected stroke but it turned out to be linked back to his accident at work causing a build up of tension through his spine and into his brain through the spianla cord.( So confirmation at last he has a brain coz it should up on the scan :rotfl:) Along with a benign lump at the base of his brain. He still wants to go on our holiday but i am really worried about his stamina and mobility and being a typical man is stubborn about using a wheelchair. Why are men so stubborn about requiring any sort of help?

Sorry to go on but have neede to get this out and its been such a lot happening in the past few weeks. he was lucky not to have broken his back in the accident. He still has a permenant headache and in so much pain. Have stil to speak with insurance company to let them know so no doubt that is going to cost me a bomb to cover him now.

I am now convinced if it was not for bad luck i would have no luck at all. And after all with luck like mine who needs enemies.!!!!

well, we like you , sending some pixiedust:your way. hope your DH feels better soon

ah, honey, i dislocated a disk after a slip last september (aftre my wdw trip) and so know how much pain it causes...
pop over to the diabilities thread, there ll be loads of people over there who can offer advice, consider a wheel chair for big parks and walking for smaller parks?
he will also be elligible for a gac (guest assistance card) which will alllow you to use exits aas entrances and alternative queing if necc, again all the info is on the dis abilities thread.
check with airlines about what they can do - we fly virgin and they put us in the smaller part (about 4 rows) behind PE so less people and ds can walk round rather than being stuck in his chair or disturbing others, last year we were with a MAW family and keep walking into them at the parks, they obviously did TGM too!!!

If you already have insurance would it not be best to consider cancelling then going when you are both able to enjoy it to its fullest. I can't imagine doing Florida when one of you is in pain, neither of you will end up having a holiday to remember and that's just not right after all the money you have shelled out.
If you don't have any insurance and decide to go then I hope it all goes well for you and that he is on the mend soon.

i am so sorry!! i hope things improve....

as for the trip - what does his doctor say? Has the doctor advised against it?

i would follow the doctors recommendations.

im stuck at home at the mo, with the rest of my family are in eygpt.
follow the drs advice, i wasnt allowed to fly due to risk of dvt, and 9 hours is along time to be on a plane.
his well being and safety must come first, i agree wdw is not something to do when your not 100%, but i also understand how gutted you would be to cancel the trip.
get medical advice, there will be other holidays together thats what i keep telling myself when dh texts me to say they are at the beach or in the poool....
my family will be back safe in 6 days, i have missed them sooo much but im still alive, if i had flown then that might not have been the case.
how much is your dh risking by flying?
oh, yes, i know, its easy for me to say, trust me its not, cancelling my holiday and my quality time with my kids was one of the hardest things i have ever had to do... last week i even provisionally booked a flight to join them. luckily a good friend made me see sense.
let him get better, go back, use your insurance :cloud9::cloud9::cloud9::grouphug::grouphug::grouphug::flower3::flower3::flower3:
take care

:grouphug:Aww how awful for your DH, I can only suggest that if he goes and tries without a wheel chair that he will soon change his mind an hour into the day. Men are stubborn beasts, it's not just yours!

I hope everything goes ok in the end.

From your ticker you seem to have at least a few weeks before your trip to think about it. Here's hoping that your husband's pain will subside.

Are the medics suggesting any permanent damage? Like the previous poster said I wouldn't go against medical advice, however difficult it might seem.

All the very best.

I just want to say don't get disheartened and we know how you feel, really we do.

First have you told him how guests who need assistance get a special Guest Assistance Card at WDW at any of their parks you can pick them up at Guest Services at the front of each park?
Second ... he doesn't have to worry about the queues or restrooms many of the rides have a different queue area for wheelchair users but you can still get on the rides and the theme parks all have disabled access including in the restrooms. You can get buses to take wheelchair users to and from the parks too or taxis. At most WDW hotels the bus drivers board the guests with wheelchairs or electric scooters (you can hire them out there too) first and secure you for the journey before letting anyone else board the bus:thumbsup2
Thirdly.. no one will treat him any differently over there for being incapacitated it's something they are used to seeing and they are all very polite and no one will bat an eyelid when he goes by they will often just give a friendly "hi" to you both and possibly ask if you need any assistance with anything.
Last but not least you both need your vacation, see what your insurance company say when you ring them about your OH's health and if you need extra cover then pay for it, it might be better than not being properly covered if any changes happen. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you both.
pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:pixiedust:For you and your hubby and I hope he makes a bit of recovery some time soon and a :grouphug:for you both too. Remember if anyone understands you it's us lot here in the Dis:thumbsup2 We are always here to listen:thumbsup2

You've got some great advice above, just wanted to wish you and your poor DH lots of luck and pain-free time before you go off on your holiday.

Given all the things I put in bold type, I would be very concerned about going on a trip to WDW right now.
It has been a relatively short time since his accident and he is still in a lot of pain. Just the plane trip is going to be very tiring and sitting in one place will make him stiff and cause even more pain (even if he gets up and walks around when the 'fasten seatbelt' sign is not on). And, what will you do if he ends up in such severe pain that he needs to be hospitalized in the US?

At the very least, I would strongly suggest discussing the plans with a doctor who is familiar with his condition.
he will also be elligible for a gac (guest assistance card) which will alllow you to use exits aas entrances and alternative queing if necc, again all the info is on the dis abilities thread.
There is information about Guest Assistance Cards in post #6 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread.
GACs do not allow use of exits as entrances though. They are meant to provide assistance people need related to a disability/medical need, such as avoiding stairs, alternate/quieter waiting places (which often don't mean a shorter wait) or a place to wait out of the sun (which is usually not an issue anyway because most lines are not in the sun).
In his case, what he needs is a wheelchair or ECV to avoid standing in line. Since you can use an ECV or wheelchair in lines without having a GAC, I am not sure that a GAC would provide any assistance for him.

Most attractions are accessible for wheelchairs and ECVs through the regular line, so there are few separate wheelchair entrances. In some cases, the boarding area is not wheelchair accessible - in those situations, people with wheelchairs and ECVs usually wait in the regular line until close to the boarding area and at that point, they are pulled off to the wheelchair boarding area.

Many rides actively advise you not to ride if you have back or neck problems as the ride can cause even more pain and injury.

I would take advantage of your travel insurance and cancel until you are both 100% well enough to travel and enjoy your holiday fully without any pre exisiting health worries placing limitations on your plans.

There is nothing worse than being in away from home when you are ill.
