and stole my gps. The insurance will pay for the car (less the $500 deductable) but not the garmin. Do you have any recommendations for one that talks but isn't too expensive?

BTW (so sad and flustered) the car door is bent out as they pried it open. I kept hearing all this road noise while driving and finally figured out the window on the passenger side is bent out (the door frame) so that there's nearly a 2 inch gap at the top. :confused3 They didn't take my CDs but did take my jacket. It's my new (08) smart car. so sad

Now here's my karma nasty side: joke's on the thief because the garmin was dying and the battery isn't replaceable without sending it in for $80 so it won't work unless it's plugged in hee hee hee.

I'm so flustered and full of anxiety and disappointment. It's such an odd thing having this happen. Wasn't prepared (but then, who is?)

Aw, I'm so sorry! My sister has a TomTom and loves it. I have a JVC and wouldn't recommend it. It's steered us wrong a few times, but my sister's TomTom has been fine and they haven't even had it updated in a couple years, either. Our car got broken into a couple of weeks ago while it was in the garage (I forgot to shut the garage door) and they stole a pack of gum and my bag of reusable shopping bags. Bunch of weirdos out there.

Real happy with our Garmin Nuvi. The ones that speak the street names(Text To Speech) will start just over $100. You can certainly find more basic models - Nuvi, or otherwise - starting around $80 that also speak, but simply say things like, "turn right in 500 feet" or "take next exit on right". Sorry about the break-in and good luck on the new GPS search ! :thumbsup2

why won't the insurance pay for it? never had anything stolen out of car so just curious as to whether my coverage would cover theft like this.

Auto insurance covers only the car. Homeowner's policy covers the contents. Both subject to their own deductibles.

It's probably considered a personal possession, and auto insurance will tell you to file a claim against homeowners. :confused3

well that is just crazy! I could understand if it was a computer but it is a GPS for gosh sakes it is attached to the car. Ty you both for the fast answers.

i agree with blue fairy! GPS should be considered a car accessory!

No, not really. Most are removable and easily taken out by the owner for safekeeping or locking in a trunk.

Some cars DO have fully-integrated GPS systems built in to the dashboard. Those are indeed 'part' of the car and would be covered by auto insurance.

I just wanted to say, keep an eye out on your house, if your house was programmed into 'home' on your gps. It has been talked about lately that people are stealing the gps and then heading to the peoples houses and breaking in too. so be safe. this is why people should NEVER leave their gps in their car...

Seconding that!

More specifically, (from what I saw on Good Morning America) thieves are stealing a person's car, hitting the "home" button on the GPS which directs them right to the person's home and then they press the handy-dandy garage door opener for easy access into a person's home that doesn't alert the neighbors. Scary stuff.

I'm embarrassed to say but I have lost two GPS's right out of my car in my driveway and yes I know understand that I need to lock my car in my own driveway :rotfl:. I think I have the Garmin Nuvi 255? and it speaks the road names I bought it on Black Friday for a little over $100 at Dick's.

OMG! You are right! They have my work, school, home, everything!

Ah. So since the car is still with me, and the garage opener is still in it, I'm OK? FWIW I have 2 dogs here. Not attack dogs but medium sized and true barkers when they hear or smell anything.

Should we do something to protect us at home?

This is what the agent said. And homeowners and auto are both with the same company, but car is 500 ded and home is 1k. :confused3

Beesknees,
Thank you for the info and so sorry about your car. In the garage!

So, sorry for being an absent OP. Smart car dealer is getting us in at 8am tomorrow. Insurance is being helpful and says the dealer can fax them the estimate and then fix it. Now I am worried about my home address and work being on the gps. It's funny, I used to take my gps with me in my purse when I got out of the car. After a couple of years I got lazy.

Thank everyone for all the support and replies. We did file a police report. DH can see the finger prints where they pulled on the window after they pried it with something. Police won't come investigate, although that was before we found the fingerprints.

I'm not letting it all ruin my holiday, but I sure feel anxiety over it all, and worry. DH saw a man sitting on a curb at the lot where he parked the car when he drove in this morning and feels that stomachy feeling like that's who did it. He works downtown and there are many people down and out that hang around that area. That is both good and bad: if it's a homeless person, he probably wouldn't have a ride to our house to rob us, but might need or want money more so might be more likely to rob the car (although why leave all the cds?).

Anyway, sorry for the ramble and thanks again for the kind words everyone.
