There isn't a symbol here on the DIS or anywhere that can adaquately show my anger and hatred at the moment. Ther eis no way, no way in HELL that this was an accident. Israli on board, advertised on board, known to the world to be on board, just a couple of days past the anniversary of the Challenger disaster -- NO WAY IN BLOODY HELL this was an accident!

Actually, it can very easily be an accident. :(

They have reported that on take-off, some of the insulation came off the shuttle and hit one of it's wings and very likely could have damaged some of it's heat shield.

On the video, I cannot see any kind of missile, etc., just the shuttle slowly breaking apart.

It's too much of a coincidence, Rhonda -- No problems that could cause an explosion like this in over 20 years, and it just *HAPPENS* to be within days of the anniversary of the Challenger explosion? First time an Israli goes up with us -- and you know how many people are at war with them -- and it just *HAPPENS* to be the first time in 20 years that anything happens?

Not to me. I don't buy it.

{{{{HUGS}}}}} Rajah.......

I hope it is found to be an accident.....which % wise is a greater likely hood.....but time shall tell

If it wasn't I would imagine that some group would take responsibility....

I think it would be almost impossible for somebody to have sent a missile up after it, it was going at 6 or 7 times the speed of sound at 200,000 feet. It was more than likely an accident. Prayers to the families, how horrible for them to have to witness that. :(

Tammi, try not to jump to conclusions yet. I just saw on the news that someone who watches & tapes the reentries said all looked normal, then the shuttle looked like it was going a bit faster then just broke up. They are also being quick to say that it seems that there wasn't any terrorism... so have hope for that {{{hugs}}}

I think we should refain from jumping to conclusions.

Statistically the two risker parts of the shuttle trip or the landing and take off. If they hit the atmosphere just wrong at landing then this could happen. (Remember how they were afraid that Apollo 13 was just going to bounce off the atmosphere and float off to space forever!)

A missle would have been tracked on US Radar!

I actually have a feeling it is an accident just like Challanger, but convincing people may never happen. It will be just like JFK with rumors and theorys for years!

They're always quick to say "There isn't any reason at this time to believe terrorism"

Maybe it was just an accident, but there are just too many "cooincidences" as to the timing for me to believe it wasn't sabotaged, blown out of the sky, or somehow else *not* an accident.

The indications are pointing toward accident, yes, but if so it's the most ironic (I guess that's the right word, I'm still seeing red) timing of any disaster I've ever heard of.

When is the anniversary of the Challenger tragedy? I can't remember.

This is so sad. :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

I'm leaning toward it being an accident. :( A very sad and tragic accident........

Time will tell. :(

Rajah......it was a horrible accident.....Accourding to the NASA Channel the Shuttle was at 200,000 feet when it exploded. Fighter jets were protecting it as they always do. Nothing could have gotten to it without being seen by the military. The altitude alone suggests accident.....I know you are upset as we all are....

Look at how many succesful launches and landings we have had. Accidents happen in everything we do. Unfortunatly, accidents with the shuttle, and this make only the 2nd, are tragic....

Such a sad day .......

Tony said what I was trying to. {{{Hugs}}} Tami

I think y'all should get off of her back and let her vent and grieve. She works at NASA, you know. I don't think that ANYONE else can say that. Let her be.

JTB - relax - I don't think anyone was jumping on her back - Just trying to keep calm & soothe concerns.... Is it jumping when folks do that now? My, things have changed around here then......

I was hardly jumping on anybody's back, just stating facts. I would say we're all upset.

CNN just said that Surface to Air Missiles could only go up to 60K feet. The space shuttle was travelling at 200K.

I'm still of the opinion that this accident was either human error or metal fatigue. Someone in my family mentioned that they heard this was the 20th mission for this particular space shuttle. I don't know if that info is correct, but if it is then it lends credence to a possible structure failure.

JTB, thanks. I don't know if anyone else remembered that.

That said, I (for once) didn't feel people were jumping on my back. Just disagreeing.

But, yes, I am *very* upset over this (duh) and still don't believe it was just an accident. If it was an accident, it's one of the most ironic accidents in modern history timing-wise.

I do not think anyone is attacking here. In times of of great loss and considering the world we live in right now I think her's is a very common reaction. I do believe they were too high and moving too fast for any missle to hit them, something would have been seen from the footage or been picked up by the fighters. I also believe that any sabatoge would have shown up much earlier in the mission, not on landing. I think this is a terrible accident, as was the Challanger accident.
