Some Thoughts on POR

Got back late last week, but just haven't had the time to read or write anything here.

A little background, we've done WDW about 8 times over the past 8 years and stayed in a variety of places, although most of them have been deluxe resorts. This was our first stay at POR.

Upon arrival around 11:30-noon on June 30th we had about a 15-20 minute wait to check in (probably not bad, but I was tired after getting up at 4 AM). The CM we dealt with was Stanley and he was very nice. He could get us into a room in AB right away, but we were hoping for a Mansion (I DID NOT fax a request this time around. I decided to just let fate take us). He could get us into a mansion, but not until later in the day. So we went with AB and he selected building 17 for us.

The room was lovely and I liked the rustic look better than I thought. (as a matter of fact when I took a quick look at our friend's room in one of the mansions, I think I preferred ours). I really liked how there were so many "nooks & crannies" in the room for storage. There was plenty of drawer space for our 8 day stay. The area for hanging clothes had a little shelf over it where I could put things and the shelf area about the 2 pedestal sinks was also helpful. I liked the ledge at the end of the tub in the bathroom too (good place for leg shaving). The shower curtain with Brer Rabbit was a nice touch too.

For most of our stay our Mousekeeper was Adelaida. While she did not do towel animals (I guess I am doomed never to see one up close and personal) she did take good care of the room, leaving extra towels, soaps, etc.

However, the 2 days Adelaida was off (everybody needs a day off!) the room was not cleaned well at all. When we returned to our room mid-day for a break the room was not done up so we went to the pool for a while. When we came back the mousekeeper was there and Divorce Court was on tv. She asked for 15 minutes, so we went for a walk and gave her about 20.

When we came back she was gone and I suppose you could consider the room "cleaned". One bed was made, one was literally half made, there was no fresh soap, less towels than usual and the place had not been vacuumed (it was noticable because I had spilled some powder earlier and it was still visible on the floor -- and yes I tried to clean it myself, but I needed a vacuum).

The following day we were out the whole day and when we came back around 8, the room had been "made up" but again had not been vacuumed, no fresh soap and no new towels (we still had 2, but the used ones had not been replaced).

We were going to complain, but the next morning as we were getting ready to leave we saw "our" mousekeeper Adelaida as we were leaving. DH asked her how often they were supposed to vacuum and she said every day. He said we hadn't been vacuumed during the 2 days she was off. Needless to say during the rest of our stay, when Adelaida was working, our room was very well taken care of (and we left notes and a tip showing our appreciation).

While I was very pleased with Adelaida, I wasn't happy with the 2 days she was away. So on July 5th I went to the front desk and spoke with Ruth at Guest Relations. I explained how happy we were with Adelaida and how our room had not really been cleaned at all while she was off. She tried to get a Mousekeeping manager for me, but no one was available. Since I was going back to the room (which had been nicely cleaned by Adelaida) she said someone would call me in 15 minutes.

2 hours later I went back to guest relations. This time I got David who got a front desk manager for me. Now not only was I mad about the 2 days when mousekeeping dropped the ball, but I was upset that no one had called me. The front desk manager apologized and took notes to give to mousekeeping. And that was that. I never did hear from mousekeeping and I have no idea if Adelaida was given the praise that we passed along or if any action was taken regarding those two days.

Now, as another note...we had friends staying in POR too. In one of the mansions. They had 2 connecting rooms. 3 adults and 3 kids. All kids were under the age of 10 (youngest being 2-1/2) so you KNOW they need towels, soaps, etc on a regular basis. There were days when they got NO MOUSEKEEPING service at all! They had to go and hunt down a mousekeeper out in the hall to get towels!

When they finally complained, they were told they would get VIP service (meaning after mousekeeping had gone in a manager would have to go and inspect everything afterwards). The day after they were told this, they returned to their room in the evening to find nothing had been done! They called and a team came out to clean right away that evening.

The next day, again nothing had been done.

They complained again and finally, after being there for over a week, they started to get their room cleaned on a regular basis.

This is not a total rant against POR. I thought it was a lovely resort, but something needs to be done at mousekeeping. If it was just me, that would be one thing. But to hear what our friends when through...

We also noticed that mousekeeping wasn't up to standard the last couple of trips. We have been going to DXL for years and never had this problem until it became POR . After several attempts on my part to bring a resolution to the mousekeeping issue, DH stepped in and we had a dramatic change immediately. We now make it very clear to the front desk, upon check in, that we want the room clean and ready by 2:00 p.m. each day when we return for our afternoon break. Worked last time.

I'm sorry about your problems with Mousekeeping. :( How was the rest of your POR stay? Did you see Bob perform, any food experiences at the resort?

I'm really surprised they vacuum every other day. I've stayed from value to deluxe and I'm 99.9 certain my room was never vacuumed during my 8-10 day vacations. One of the filthiest rooms I've had was at a deluxe. There was garbage from a previous guest (candy wrappers, food, etc...behind the night table and who knows what on the the floor.) No one vacuumed while we were there.

It makes sense that they should vacuum your room every day. It takes so little time, and when you are living out of one room you need it due to simple situations created by eating in your room and running in and out of the room each day. It is also alot easier on the eyes. :D

WOW! Stayed at POFQ in 2000 and Mousekeeping was up to its usual high standards! I hope this is a temporary problem, and not the start of a true downward trend on Disney's part! :(

If I were you (or your friends) I'd write a letter to the resort manager of POR and copy it to Walt Disney World Guest Communications, PO Box 1000 Lake Buena Vista FL 32830-1000. Front-line people like the desk manager don't have much power to do anything, but sometimes if you go to the top you get better results. You may want to mention you've been 8 times in 8 years, they may be more responsive to someone who knows what the Disney standard has been and should be, as well as the fact that you obviously spend a great deal of money (not that it should matter, but sometimes it does!).

I hope that was the only down part of your trip!

We also had some problems w/ POR mousekeeping this past Easter week (i.e. showing up around 4:00pm, not showing up at all on one day. I actually forgot all about it until now that it was mentioned. We were having too good of a time to let it really bug us, I guess. Of course, our room never had a mess from a previous guest, I think that would have grossed me out.

We stayed at POR this past Dec. 27, 2003 - Jan. 1, 2004 in Building 17. Had absolutely no issues with housekeeping...in fact the carts were rolling around the walkways bright and early each morning. One day I had gotten a late start, so DH and DS went for a walk while waiting for me. While dressing our housekeeper knocked as I forgot to put up the "do not disturb" sign. We were out of our room each day by 9am and beds, towels, toiletries were always completed by our return (between 1-4pm). Don't know if we had the same lady each day as they worked so quietly and tried not to disturb anyone. We did leave a nice tip at the end of our stay. Also stayed years ago at the former Dixie Landings and had the same service. No complaints here.

So it seems like I'm (we're) not the only one(s) with mousekeeping problems at POR.

Overall, I thought it was a lovely resort. The theming was very nice, I thought the room overall was great with lots of storage, but when our "mousekeeper" Adelaida had the day off, everythign went to heck.

We did go hear Bob Jackson one night. He is obviously very talented, but the place was jam packed so we didn't stay too long.

Intended to eat at Boatwrights, but everyone in the party got held up on that day (except for my DH who ended up waiting there for an hour for the rest of us. Too bad I left a message on our friends' cell phone. DH never got the message and was really worried and angry with me).

Just based on the mousekeeping service, I think I might try another mod next time around (maybe POFQ? We had other friends who stayed there at the same time and had no complaints).

Wow,
I'm really surprised to hear about your problems at POR. I think it's the nicest resort I've stayed at yet. Mousekeeping was awesome. They even set up an autographed picture of the characters on our table for my 3 yr old niece. With it they placed a pin and a little note saying Happy Birthday. We were so impressed. So much so that we're staying there again in October. I guess it's hit and miss when you go. Sometimes you get great service and sometimes you get the duds.

We stayed in Building 17 for 8 nights in November and had no problem whatsoever with mousekeeping. We had an abundance of towels, etc. (And I used the quiet pool several times, so I used a lot of towels) While we were out most mornings, there were times we were there in the afternoons and everything had been done. No catching the maid unawares!

By the way, I'd have no problem with the maid listening to the tv while she worked. I like to have it on when I do housework, too.
