I truly hope everything goes well for your friend and the recipient!

I donated a kidney to my brother 17 years ago.

6 weeks later I was pregnant with my first child!

Other than a rather large scar (I hear they can do it laparoscopically now, with much less scarring!), it's had no affect on me.

Fauna it sounds like you must have had no problems recovering! I think you're right that the surgery techniques are a little better now, although this is still an incredibly big undertaking. Did you have a lot of down time after your surgery? What kinds of things do you think friends could do that would be most helpful for her in the next week or so?

How is your brother doing now?

I don't think a lot of people realize how serious an operation this is and what terrible complications the donor can suffer, including death. I would not do this for anyone except my immediate family.
