Hoping to get some suggestions from some expert DVC members. We own, free and clear, two contracts, one at BWV and one at WLV. We are, quite frankly, Disney-ed out. But we go each summer with our grown kids and grandaughter for a week at WLV, do all the princess things, etc. We especially like that resort for it's ease of transport to MK. But we bought a vacation home in the mountains of NC near Asheville and are planning to become summer residents of NC, thus taking the Disney summer trip off the table for us.
I would like to let the kids use our WLV contract into the future but we would like to either sell our BWV contract or rent/transfer the points. Sale prices seem to have followed the Florida real estate market into the crapper so the latter alternative may make better sense as we don't absolutely need the money out right now. Anyone have any experience renting/transferring points on an annual basis and how much of a hassle is it to do so?

It can be a hassle and there are a flood of owners renting reservations below the usual price.

I have rented points a few times and did not find it much hassle except for one time when the person backed out after I made the reservation and before he sent any money. That was not really a big deal as I was able to just cancel it without any problems like holding points etc.. I did find it was easier to rent out a reservation using these boards when there were reservation wanted listings allowed as I could sort of match up what points I had with what someone was looking for. Just be sure your decided how you want to be paid and on what kind of schedule and make certain the person renting the reservation understands what your policy is - no refunds, will try to change dates if there is a problem and if there is availability etc. You and the renter need to agree on all points of the transaction. I have never used a written contract other than what was in the emails we exchanged and have talked to all of them except one on the phone at one time or another. The rental that I liked best was someone from work and I let him have the points for a little less than usual just because of the convenience of not having to deal with someone I didn't know. I am thinking that we will not be using as many of our points either since we purchased a winter home on the west coast of Florida so may be selling a contract or offering the points for rent again depending on which seems to make the most economic sense at the time. Good luck with your decision.

If you are going to summer near Asheville, you might consider using your BWV points at Hilton Head. Depending on how many points you have, you could go one or two times for three days or so. HH is very relaxing, but has the benefit of the beach and the DVC rooms. It is not "pushy" Disney as the parks are.

We particularly enjoy HH in the "shoulder" seasons, in April - early June, before the kids are out of school and in Sept - Oct.

owners are selling their points way too low because they cant use them and will lose the points anyways.. depending o nwhen you bought you may be able to sell them at near your cost

I personally would vote for a transfer out of all your points to another owner. We own at BW and SSR and this past year we transfered in 150 ish points from another member. It worked out really well. They were not hassled by any changes in our plans and for the "seller" it was a clean transaction. I paid using Paypal first and then about an hour later I had the points. We had considered adding on again (we currently have 520pts), but I am not at all interested in paying anything more in dues... If I come up short again for us we will definitely be making a transfer!! Plus as your granddaughter gets older she may enjoy the BW more than WLV and then you can go between the two contracts

In your situation, I would either:

1. Transfer the points to another member, if I could find a member willing to take the entire annual allotment at once. That way I'd have the money and be done for the year.

OR

2. I would contact David (aka Daddio) and work with him to rent the points. He finds the renter, does all the contact with the renter and gives the owner a set price per point, depending on the resort and amount of time before the points expire. All you would have to do is call to make the reservation he tells you to make. Easy. In other words, he takes most of the work out of the equation, minimizes the owner's risk (he has a number of good, repeat customers) and still gives the owner a decent amount for the points. Check the R/T Board for his ad (at the top) if this option interests you.

BWV points are more valuable on the rental market than some of the other resorts, assuming you are renting early in your use year. I think you will do OK renting while you wait for the resale market to recover a bit. Good luck!

I am no expert but I have rented and transferred point here on the board (both as the renter and the owner of the points). Transferring points is the easiest but renting has not been hard. I would always use a contract just for the safety and security of all parties. The first time I rented points I was surprised that I had about 12 people would wanted the points with in 24 hours. When I have rented points myself the hardest thing was finding someone who had points to rent. I wonder with the demand for points if we are not going to see more points for renting over $10 pt.

As to if you should sale your contract I can not advise. Have you talked to your kids about what they may really use?

I would not imagine that you would get top dollar for your points should you sell them right now, with the economy the way it has been. You might do better to transfer/rent them for a few years.

In addition, this will give you the time to decide what you want to do long term (maybe a "break" from Disney for a year or two will rejuvenate your desire to go). Your kids/grandkids might also want to go more...and it is a different experience as they grow.

You might also consider using your points for a cruise or something else...for a change of pace.

We personally have a small contract that never seems to be enough points for us (particularly as our kids get older and we need more space). This year, we found another DIS'er who was looking to transfer out points. We agreed up on a price, I paid half in advance via paypal...then she made the transfer into my account. Once I confirmed with MS that the points had been transferred, I paid the rest of the money. It was very easy, and we were thrilled to have access to the additional points without committing to a permanent add-on. For her, she was able to deal with all of her points in one transaction and didn't have the hassle of making reservations for someone, etc.

To be honest, you might very well be able to find someone who is willing to rent the entire sum of your points each year. In our case, our points are never enough, but we don't want the commitment of adding on. I am sure we will eventually have to just add on, but for now we are happy paying for the transfer of additional points when we need them to augment our own contract. I know there are other DIS'ers like us who would welcome an annual and "safe/trusted/reliable" source for points transfer.

Good luck in your decision. Just be sure to take some time before you sell.

Depending on how many BWV points you have, maybe you could combine 3 years worth through banking and borrowing and do an Adventures by Disney trip? That would give you an amazing trip AND a break from Disney.

Did you know that most Southerners find the use of the word "summer" as a verb to be quite peculiar.

My thanks to all who responded. Some really great suggestions. And we have stayed at Hilton Head and enjoyed it very much. Will do it again when my back settles down and I can break 100 again!
I do like the idea of transferring points for a few years and then maybe banking some points for one of those Adventures by Disney as sort of a 35th Wedding Anniversary trip. Again, thank you all very much, great ideas and the "pros" came through as usual!
