I was going to buy one of those nifty lead-line pouces for my film, when I ran across this article. It offers some excellent advise to avoid ruining your film and other safe travelling tips. I hope it helps!

Boy, what a terrific article! Thanks for sharing it. I'm passing it on to my entire traveling group . . . all 13 of them.

Great article thank you for the link. I had taken about 10 rolls of film on my last trip and I asked to have my film hand inspected instead of going thru the xray. There was not a line at all at MCO but the inspector seemed VERY aggitated that I asked. This was a very important trip (what disney trip isnt?) and I did not want to risk losing any pictures. I apologized and he didn't even respond. Oh well... if anything had happened to those pictures I would have been heartbroken.

So it's not enough to put film in your carry on bag but we must also take it out and ask for them to look at it instead of putting it through the carry on X-ray machine?

I've never done that and I've never had a problem. Have they increased the strength of the carry on X-ray machine as well?

I am big on not bothering the security people as much as possible so I can't even emagine asking them to hand check my film.

One TSA web page says that if film has been through the carry on X-rays, say, about 4 times, you should ask to have it hand checked thereafter.

The film X-ray bags (lead lined bags) you can get seem like a good idea but lead is metal and after serveral usages, the lead lining starts to break at the corners and wherever the bag is flexed, and develops pin prick holes. Once this happens, the protection is lost.

But there have been isolated reports that, for travelers asking to have film hand checked, everything else including their shoes seems to get checked more thoroughly.

Can you buy film down there and have it developed (perhaps at a one hour film stand) before you fly home?
