I realize a lot of these questions may have already been asked but i'm looking for a personalized answer. My best friend and I are really missing WDW and we were looking for a cheap way to go on vacation. We talked about camping at FW but we don't really know where to start. She's been camping before but I never have. I don't know the first thing about pitching a tent. It sounds really fun to me though as i'm not high maintenence and don't need the comforts of a hotel. Should be rent a tent in the area and bring our own sleeping bags?

How are the showers in the area? Can we stay near a fire pit so we can make smores? :rotfl:

It sounds great but i'm inexperienced and not sure how this works. Thanks!

I know this is lousy way to say :welcome:

...but

I just couldn't resist Mr Fudd! That was one of the funniest typos I've read! I'm glad I wasn't drinking anything!

First, camping at Fort Wilderness is often not the least expensive way to visit WDW. Recently, WDW has offered discounts on value resorts that can make it cheaper to stay in a hotel room than a campsite.

But, depending on the time of year, and if you are willing to do a lot of your own cooking, camping can be less expensive than a WDW hotel room.

The campfire area is centrally located, so you are pretty much assured that you will be close enough to go make a smore.

If you and your friend don't have camping equipment, you will have to figure out how to borrow some, or factor the cost of that into your trip. If you have to rent a tent from FW, you might as well go to a hotel.

I hope it all works out for you.

You can rent a tent from the Fort, but if you are going to stay more than a couple of nights you'd do better just buying one at Wal*Mart. There are "comfort stations" located near all the campsites, so you should be within 8-900 feet at the most. And they are clean and nice. Towels, soap and shampoo are NOT provided though. As for campfires, there is a Campfire Sing-a-Long nightly (weather permitting) at a facility near loop 1400 (near the center of the campgrounds). They sell smores kits there, or you can bring your own fixins.

How embarassing!

Wow, I had no idea tent rentals were expensive. Thanks for all the advice! I just thought it might be a fun idea but I guess a hotel would be better...

Yeah, according to this thread, Fort Wilderness charges $40 a night for tent rental, and that is on top of the campsite fee ($46 minimum)... so on average you're looking at over $100 a night. They do put them up and take them down for you, but it adds up quick! Sorry.

Ahh I see, those are nice tents! I was picturing a little cheap tent just for some shelter.

Camping at the Fort is awesome. Just be warned that if you camp anywhere else, it will not be as nice as the Fort. The showers are wonderful. I would suggest buying an inexpensive tent and sleeping bag as well. We camped last May and stayed on the 1500 loop. It does not have hookups for RVs so you won't have noise from their generators. It's also right across from the Meadows pool. We bought a picnic table canopy and even brought a small mini fridge to keep drinks cool. It was an awesome experience. I hope you decide to camp!

Thanks for your response! It sounds wonderful! We'll probably give it a go. I don't care if the tent isn't amazing, just as long as it doesn't rain! We'd still laugh even if it did :)

Just for the sake of clarity, the only reason you'd ever hear a generator at the Fort is if there were a power outage, since all sites have power. Now, pressure washer noise, that's a different story... better left to a different thread! LOL

We started out in a tent at the Ft. then to a pop up and now to a TT. We are completely hooked :lovestrucon camping especially at the Ft. I suggest to save money:thumbsup2-if you camp at the Ft. in value season August 9 (it starts) that you not buy sleeping bags. You will "cook". I suggest air mattresses and throw a sheet on it. Bring a fan for the tent and outside the tent to keep the air flowing.
Summer is knocking right now-it's nice at night currently but the days are getting warmer. :cool2:
