It has taken me a little while, but I finally have posted some of my pictures from Halloween week 2006. My gallery is listed below. I know that I have a lot to learn about taking better pictures and have gotten a lot of great ideas from the board. Let me know what you all think!

P.S.

- I figured out that I can not post URL's yet, so I apologize for the abbreviated link and hope that it is ok.

- I have added some additional pictures, mainly from the Lion King show.

I think you just need to get to 10 posts to be able to post photos....

so jump on in and make some comments :)

awesome pictures, thanks for sharing...

I like your setup I use zenfolio also...I think the black background really sets off the pics...

only suggestion I would have is try vertical shots on individual people, I would have liked to see more of the dancer in the parade...LOL

Nice photos Zeagle! And :welcome: to the DIS!

What kind of camera do you use?

Welcome to the DIS, Zeagle.

Excellent pictures. As said, the black really sets them off. I really like those Lion King ones, superb! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the compliments and the warm welcomes.

I have only had a camera since the trip in Oct and it was my first time using a DSLR, so I know that I can do better. I really love the ability of the camera and the features outnumber my capacity atm.

I will look for some "vertical" pictures and try to update the gallery. There are just too many picture opps to select from. Which is definitely not a bad thing.

Thanks!

I used a Canon 30d during the week and just picked up a 1d mk III that should hopefully be delivered today :) . I cannot wait to take the new camera down with me in Oct or Dec.

Wow, going to the big leagues.... I'll just sit back and drool over the mkIII for a while, hopefully one day my skills will warrent the purchase, but not yet.

not so sure that skill is what warrants upgrading, so much as type of shooting and desire for bigger and better toys...:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

considering i'm still drooling over a 30d successor, it'll be at least 3 yrs till i start dreaming about mk anythings:rotfl2:

agreed...For me I need, read "want", the faster shutter speed and AF system, as I love to shoot action and low light pictures. However, that is not to say that the ego goes a long way with bigger toys :scratchin

Currently my kit includes 24-105 f/4 L IS, 70-200 f/2.8 L IS, 85 f/1.2 L, 24-70 f/2.8 L, and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS. Hopefully, I would love to add the 300 f/2.8 L IS at some point...but that is wishful thinking atm

What glass are you using?

That's a nice set of glasses. :lmao: :rotfl2: :rotfl:

How do you like the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 L IS? Every once in a while I get frustrated by the lack of reach of the 70-200 and think about getting the 100-400. Then I think about the push-pull zoom design and about how nice the Nikon 200-400 is. Then I go back to waiting for Canon to do a better job in that range.

I really want a 200-400 f/4 IS like the Nikon guys have. That's a really, really sweet lens.

Wow, the colors are fantastic! Is that all from the camera? Do you do alot of post-processing? Either way, they are great!

The low light shots are amazingly clear. Is that due to the 30d, the lens you used, or both? I had to laugh when I saw ISO 1600 with no spots all over the picture. I can't even get it that clear with my S2IS set at ISO 400!

Again, great job. If you need to donate that old used 30d to someone, just let me know, ok? I won't tell anyone. :rolleyes1

I like the 100-400 a lot and it has worked well for me on numerous occasions with no complaints about picture quality from me. I have some recent air show pics up on my gallery, if you want to see some examples.

The lens is great for the Zoo, Air shows, Events with lots of light etc...The push/pull is really not that bad, although the tension ring can cause some aggravation. I would love to see Canon make a 200-400 f/4 or even a f/2.8. Both would be large in size, esp the 2.8 if it is technically possible to build, let alone the price. I doubt that I would even sell the 100-400, if Canon did build either lens, as the 100-400 does travel well.

It is also another reason why I am saving for the 300 f/2.8 when I need reach past 200mm. The lens works great and takes a 1.4 extender with ease ;).

my unanswerable question in a nutshell what makes these( and other "better" camera shots) look so different

Thank you for the kind words .

I would say 80-90 percent of the work is done be the camera and lens combination. I do post-process the pictures, but tend not to do much outside of cropping, color temp/saturation, and exposure. To much post-processing exposes to many flaws, imho.

The Lion King show was shot with a 70-200 F/2.8 which is one of my favorite lenses. Spot metering within the 30d allows for great exposure at 1600 iso, especially for well lit stage events like the Lion King show.

I'll keep ya in mind, if I donate the camera...;)
